So there has been a lot of discussion about ranking systems over on TestYourMight.com; and a lot of that discussion pertains to how we do our ranking system here on 8WAYRUN. In that discussion, @BrewtusBibulus brought up an excellent point.
When I set up the rankings here, I set it up to limit entries to a player's best 5 scores within a 12 month period. This would help stale out inactive players, limit players running away with top scores simply because they attended the most events, and also prevent penalization due to players having a "bad day". I came up with the scale of 5 scores because at the time, Soulcalibur was pretty active.
However, during the past year, the popularity of Soulcalibur has diminished. With the diminished popularity, it means that events were getting smaller and sometimes not even happening at all. What that meant of course was that players were actually having trouble reaching the 5 score limit... so their scores were being unfairly averaged and thus players who could attend more events were suddenly propped up without merit.
What ended up is that we had a #1 ranked player who had never won an event before; he just happened to attend twice as many events as everyone else... which is exactly what my system was supposed to fight against. Fortunately, because of how the system was designed, it's very easy to fix.
What I did was change the limit. Instead of requiring a player to perform at 5 events in order to maximize their scores, they only need to attend 3. I feel this number more accurately reflects the number of majors a top player should be required to attend in order to accurately judge their rankings.
In addition, I've also slightly changed the content of the "brackets" column to help show whether or not a player has maximized their score.
