In 2008, on the video games board on 4chan, someone got the idea to post an animated picture of Piccolo and Vegeta from Dragonball Z doing...Well, I'm sure you can imagine, in off-topic threads. It was enough to derail them due to the attention the picture got. Eventually, the mods banned people for using the picture at all.

This prompted people to get creative. Edits of the picture involved zooming in, zooming out, repeating it, or pixellating it. Eventually, it became so pixellated that it was just a pair of coloured moving blocks: namely, green and purple.

It became a smaller version of the game, essentially. Making people think about it got the response from them.

Eventually, some poor rapper comes along and makes a song about weed. The reason it got attention is because the chorus repeats the words "Green and purple." This became the official theme song of the meme, and a few weeks ago, the rapper himself got involved by asking how his music was related to it.

It's a parody of Ganguro culture in Japan, along with Dragonball. It gained its popularity from the video game section of 4chan. It started as a reaction image, and when someone posted the video, the viewcount exploded.

Gangura? heard that somewhere before... but where? Hmm, is it that brown skin blonde hair thing? If it is, isn't that only suppose to be a girl thing in japan? didn't know dudes did it to. lol!
