See thread title. I don't really understand when it's necessary to QS and when it's okay to just plain step. I guess I could test every vertical attack in the game, but with so many characters with so many moves, I think I'd prefer some kind of general rule I could follow. Any tips?

Unfortunately, I have an Xbox 360 with no capture hardware. I do, however, have a digital SLR camera, so hopefully the shots aren't too horrible (but man, cameras sure do have ridiculous contrast ratios):
