"Team Ninja revealed a relatively classy piece of concept art during the announcement event earlier this week, which you can see below. Could this be a hint that it's dialing back the series' notorious boob fixation?

"That image encapsulates the kind of sensuality and the kind of beauty we're looking to incorporate into Dead or Alive 5," he explained.

"So, guys who just look at chick's boobs... c'mon, there's more to women and more to beauty than just boobs, so we want to take a little more adult approach to how to make women beautiful."

Wow, this coming from TN? Doa's character presentation has always irritated me somewhat, not saying they should do away with sexual overtones all together, but I definitely think that more subtle implementations on the whole create a stronger, more colourful image.

  3. Dr Tom! So good to see ya.

I hope this holds true when we see the final product, honestly.

To be honest, I have no problem with their scantily clad women (Not saying I want them in bikinis either), it was the movies I didn't like. In DOA4 they would have the chicks movie ending nothing to do with the story. Like how Lei Fang ending; she is groped by a man on the train. I feel they can make the girls look hot, without how they portray them in movies.
  5. Aw a lot of fighting games have endings like this. Some fighter's endings (like Ryu's) are based on the story and some of them are nothing more than fantastic fluff. Like in Tekken? What grand scheme is affected because Lili's car pulled out of nowhere and made Asuka drop her lunch?? Just saying it's sorta par for the course.

    Your right, Ghengis.
*SIGH* story mode in fighting games... well thats a different story.
Well everybody seems to want Team Ninja to change how strong they push sex appeal (so do I). So what exactly do ya'll want changed about it?

You know what’s innovative about this current generation of fighting games? Nothing, according to Yosuke Hayashi of Team Ninja, the company behind the upcoming Dead or Alive 5. He believes that his newest installment of the DOA franchise should really strive to advance the genre into the 21st century.

This is great news! We’ve been stuck with sub-par and unrealistic rendering of jiggling breasts for too long, and it’s high time someone took the first step and used the latest arsenal of graphical improvements to – oh, wait. That’s not what he meant. He meant improvements to the gameplay of fighting games. Well, I suppose we could use some innovation in that area too.

Just to prove that it’s not all about boobs, a DOA5 video of two dudes fighting is after the break.

Hayashi believes that the current generation of fighting games, like Street Fighter 4 and Tekken 6, were essentially the same game you played 10 years ago with better graphics. He goes on to say that for DOA5, they “want to make sure it provides something else, something different and moves the genre forward. It’s not going backwards, it’s trying to push the envelope for fighting games.”

Although he didn’t specify how it would accomplish this, he did say that environmental responsiveness would be emphasized. “We wanted to bring that into the modern gameplay and update that into modern action elements”, Hayashi explained. “Now you’re able to focus on different areas of where you want to launch your opponent and we have several different sorts of dynamic attractions in the stage so that players can enjoy that sort of aspect even more.”
A few goodies also accompanied this news during the Tokyo Game Show: a piece of concept art, showing a pretty lady doing no fighting whatsoever, and a pre-alpha gameplay video. That video still looks like your usual generic fighting game to me, so we’ll have to wait to see what kind of innovation will actually emerge. However, the encouraging sales figures of Mortal Kombat, which was also more or less your generic fighting game, show that maybe “innovation” isn’t needed to for this type of game to sell.

After all, Dead or Alive has, like five times as many breasts as Mortal Kombat

So we've got four 3D fighting games coming out next year. I may end up buying them all if they turn out good.

Dead or Alive 5: Pre-Alpha Trailer Stokes Anticipation

The fate of the Dead or Alive series was put into serious doubt when the creative engine behind the series, Tomonobu Itagaki has left the company. The separation wasn’t an amicable one as evidenced by the lawsuit Itagaki filed for withheld bonus compensation. Well, it appears that Team Ninja has decided to forge ahead with Dead or Alive 5 without Itagaki at the helm. Many observers of this highly respected fighting game note that since Itagaki has left such a big imprint on the series, it would be quite a challenge for Team Ninja to continue without the game designer. Are they up to the task? Team Ninja is also working on the Ninja Gaiden series.

To mark the decision to proceed with Dead or Alive 5, Team Ninja released a pre-alpha trailer to clue us in on what to expect. According to Team Ninja, fans should expect environments to play a bigger role in fights. They shouldn’t be looked at as merely passive “sidekicks” but active elements in a fight. The video shows this new direction in action- Hayate and Ryu Hayabusa are fighting on a rooftop which a huge beam swings around and thrashes anything that gets in its way. Details are still quite scarce at this point of development but we do know that this title will be released in 2012.

This game has the greatest eye-candy of all. Great dynamic camera angle, great environments and graphics.

Though the game does fight 2Dish; all move tracks no matter where you step, it's still a fun game and so I might as well add DOA5 to my wishlist.

Best visually impressive of all 3D fighting games IMO.

The toning down of the sex appeal isn't anything new for the United States. For Japan though it's nice to see the homebase tone it down a notch. Dead or Alive 4 was advertised as "The most beautiful game" when it came out, on ads of the girls in their costumes (non-skimpy costumes though).

However, the United States did treat it even classier. Tecmo had informed me in person that they didn't know of the competitive scene for Dead or Alive in the states. So with the scene in mind they weren't going to go for sex appeal with their marketing, and that was a conscious effort due to hearing from the community.

For proof, you can take a look at the US commercial to see that they pretty much held through with their promise (best I could find):

Compare that to the Dead or Alive 3 commercial (Which arguably is the most competitive version heh):

The new hit spark effects are the worst thing I've seen in the series. Worse than all the ninjas combined.

However, focusing more on stages and the environment might be what the game needs. The movelists have always felt padded with interchangeable, redundant moves, but if they actually embrace this new dynamic from the ground up, then the difference between 4 mid punches doesn't have to be speed and damage, but how they will interact with hazards. That would be just the gimmick to both set it further apart from the competition, and give meaning to the moves in a unique and interesting way.
  13. iKotomi [10] Knight

I really couldn't tell the difference between blocking and getting hit. Not like anyone was blocking, but the hit sparks just don't look like you're getting hit.

I'll reserve my judgement on this one until I can play it. Itagaki being gone can only help it probably, but I have never really been impressed by the graphics in this trailer or in any of the games. The moving stuff in the background was pretty cool, but I honestly don't see anything when I'm actually playing unless it's an important gameplay element.
  14. Fuzzieviking [12] Conqueror

Forget doa5. Where is my DoAx3??
  15. Age_of_Truth [10] Knight

Yes indeed, I am really pleased they've gone down this route, using the environment as a primary means to do damage will hopefully add all kind of tactical madness to the fun. Or just make it look really cool. It's always been the USP of the DOA series (after the T&A of course)
  16. Power-Stunna [01] Neophyte

DOA5 looks good. Hopefully they add something new to the gameplay. Hayabusa hanging off the edge of the building! That was epic!

anyone know a good DOA forum to join? I used to be on quite a few like 6/7 years ago but they all are now inactive or shut down. Well central is still around but that place never really appealed to me much not to mention the place looks outdated as hell, it looks exactly the same from when I joined :/

Oh damn :( I guess that's a new-ish site right? I've never heard of DOA World before lol.
I probably won't join then because of that, will just be lurking instead :o

you might also notice it shares a lot of resemblance to 8WR. That's because Jaxel has been a big help in making sure the site runs well. Hope anyone who joins enjoys it there, if not feel free to let me know of any issues.

It's a newer DOA site ran by reliable people like Sorwah and Hubbs. Expect this to be THE DOA site when DOA5 drops.
