Hey everyone, I've been trying pretty hard lately to learn how to just guard some moves that have been giving me trouble, but I'm just not able to do it well and or consistently either in training mode or in a real match and was wondering if anyone has any tips on getting started with just guard. My in-ability to just guard is across pretty much every move and it might have to do with the fact that I am trying to time them like the parries in Street Fighter III.

All and any help is greatly appreciated

My problem with just guard was holding guard button longer than needed. You really have to concentrate on quick tapping the guard button instead of regular press. Seriously quick tap and release. Not sure if that helps but that's what was holding me back. Goodluck

you just tap the guard button just before an attack hits you. it seems darn hard at first but when you get the hang of it you'll think "how did i have such a problem with this?" I've just started JG multi hit strings (well the second hit of a two hit string), most Brave Edges, and even some unblockables. it's very convenient. i think there's another thread on 8WR addressing this very issue. that thread has been up longer so has more feedback. i'd suggest checking that out. just type in Just Guard in the search bar located in the upper right hand corner.

Yeah, there are a couple little tricks that can mess up executing a JG.

Like Pernicious mentioned, the G input itself has to be done pretty quickly. The quicker the better actually. I personally do it as if it were a JF slide input.

Also you can't JG from blockstun. That's why it's so hard to JG some quick strings like Natsu's AAB. You have to wait till your character recovers before you can attempt a JG which can leave you a very small window.

Finally, you can't JG for about half a second after failing to JG.

I suggest keeping these things in mind, and going over some of the moves from the Essential JG thread in training. Don't be scared to go crazy with JG attempts in casual matches either. They're not hard to do, not even online, when you get the execution out of the way.

JG was the reason I stopped playing this game, I mean seriously, it's way too hard.

And then my opponents would be JG'ing a 13 frame standing K, and then I would get launched for doing a standing K. Doesn't seem like fair punishment to me.

JG is for frame/execution junkies, or for people with inhuman dexterity. Not to mention it looks totally stupid and fake in a battle.

but you get a sense of accomplishment and pride when you do get it off. just practice and then you'll get it. i get what you mean on those random JG spammers though. it's annoying when you're JG'd all the time.

    yeah what vincent said.

JGing two hit strings or BE attacks is easily attainable with practice. you are referring to somebody who is hammering away at the G button after making you guard a safe move or whiffing an attack with good recovery. there is no skill in this and its exploitable on your end by using throws or lows.

you complain about alot of things in this game though so its no surprise to hear you talk like this. arent you kurisukapsu?

Best JG practice: fight Hilde in training mode with her doing C2/C3 A (i believe, it's the one with the BA property on the second hit), Also there's Pyrrha 66B BE. Siegfried SCH K BE, Xiba 6A/6B with K follow-up.

This is how I got JG down,

Just tap the G button, what I do is I pull my thumb down and tap the button with the tip of my nail and it's worked for me.

Well, I have tried just about everything that people have suggested. I already know that you have to press G really really REALLY fast, the problem for me is that frame window BEFORE the move hits that you have to press the G.

after a full hour in training mode, I couldn't even JG Astaroth's A+B, not even once.

You guys can have that damn JG, and this game. Plus I don't feel like punishing safe moves is good for SC, not at all (especially with no meter cost). Oh and one other thing; unblockables should be UNBLOCKABLE damnit!! Not like they are very useful anyway, but still it's the principle.

Do the Hilde method. Trust me, it's incredibly useful! JG'ing a Break Attack to eliminate their advantage and leave them at disadvantage (like Pyrrha 66B BE, Ezio 66BB BE)
  9. Synraii [14] Master

    Fun fact:
Alpha Paroklos' only break attack: 44B+K BE
    + 2 on guard
    Over -35 on Jg, lol.
  10. TuckerX [01] Neophyte

Wait, so if you guard his 44B+K BE, he keeps a very small advantage. But if you JG, he's essentially full retard?
  11. Synraii [14] Master

People think JG just takes away some blockstun and they are wrong. A JG allows you to treat a move as though it whiffed entirely, ergo break attacks can be semi safe or death on JG, depends entirely on the whiff window.

I didn't realize that the discrepancy in frames was that big. O.O

What's the easiest button to JG with? I struggle with the face buttons, just wondering if anyone JGs easily with any of the top buttons

What do you people think about "fuzzy" just guard or whatever it would be called? Tapping then holding G to get a just guard if the timing is right, otherwise a regular guard. Do you consider it exploiting the game? Do you use the technique, or do you use exclusively regular hold guard or just a tap? I can see that technique having its drawbacks with not learning just guard properly and only just guarding the first hit of any multi hit strings, but on the other hand I don't know if I will ever be able to rely on my ability to time the guard tap correctly without going for the safe option.

It's fine. As you mentioned it will only JG 1 hit since the second guard cuts the JG window off, and you can still be punished for being passive.

Use both single taps, and taps into guard depending on how confident you are.
