Soul Calibur coming to Apple iOS (iPhone/iPad/Touch)

It was finally announced that SC is going touch "soon". What do you think? Should the game be kept the same? How should the controls be? I think this deserves its own thread.

First of all, a few more characters would be great. I'm all in for Cassandra, Raphael and Tira. In fact, I would love if this game was a mix of different SC games, having the basic gameplay of SCII, more characters and upgraded graphics.

If my iPod can handle that for two hours and a half straight, I see no reason to not upgrade the graphics sightly.

As for multiplayer, I think that the best would be just bluetooth, lag would be very hard to deal with, although it might actually turn out well. But since it's a handheld device, most of the gameplay (if not all) will be single player. I think that apart from the classic Arcade and Survival, Mission and CaS would make the game much more replayable. Yes, I said CaS. Regarding the roster, I'd go for: Original SCI roster, Raphael, Cassandra, Tira, Talim, Yun and post SCII Nightmare. Zasalamel and Setsuka would be really hard to play with in a touch screen, unless they're simplified, but that would kinda mess them up.

And talking about controls, that's going to be the most important part, I know we have the advantage of multi touch, but we're gonna need at least two shortcut buttons. It would also be awesome to have iCade support.

And for a sidenote, I'm wondering why they didn't just go ahead and post SCV.

Street Fighter IV on the iOS was a complete mess, so I can only think worse for whatever happens here.

The most "portable" they'll get is SC1 HD for the iPad.

Along with today's new detailed SCV feature announcement, new details have also been released on the original Soul Calibur game for Apple iPhone 4/Touch and iPad 2 with iOS 4.3 or greater. It will be released on Janurary 19, 2012 with price yet TBD.

The game will be touch driven, support Retina display and will have leaderboard and Gamecenter functionality. The full original roster of 19 characters will be playable in the game and include all the original game modes:
  • Arcade Battle
  • Time Attack
  • Survival
  • Extra Survival
  • Museum
  • Practice
Not sure if it will support online multiplayer but it appears to be a perfect port of the original 1998 Dreamcast game.

iPhone 4/Touch and iPad with iOS 4.3? So, it'll only work on Retina Display, then?

Glad I have my iPhone then. iTunes Cards, better watch out.

Yeah, seems like a cool idea but touch controls are going to make it fail. This will never usurp the XBLA version.

Namco Bandai won't be stupid enough to screw the touch controls, hopefully. And SC1 on Retina Display, on a compact, mobile platform? Yes, please.

It's not a matter of anyone being "stupid enough" or not. Tactile feedback is very important for fighting games, playing without it is almost like playing blind on some level. Mobile platforms are not ideal for fighting games by ANY stretch.

Sure the XBLA version is great port on that platform but it lacks some features from the original game. It appears this is a complete port and that's an impressive feat. Yes, real controllers will trump touchscreen controls on anyone's account but what do you expect? Massive tournaments to be built around this thing? =p

Clearly it's designed to bring back some old nostalgic fun on the go and it'll be great carrying this around in my pocket while the rest of life has to catch up with me. No complaints here =)

I suppose so... but what exactly is not in the XBLA version?

Game intro and Mission Battle were missing in XBLA. Looking over the details again on this announcement, not sure if they will include them here... Well I'd imagine the intro will be tranfered but not sure about Mission Battle mode.
