Fu-ma's Shadow
I've had these kinds of conversations before, but I haven't seen a thread on this topic. What kind of characters would you like to see in future games? I'm not just talking about fighting styles, but also character personalities and archetypes. Where would they fit in the story? Here are some of my ideas:

- A swashbuckling pirate type character. His style would be Ezio's assassin style applied to him, like what they did with Kratos to Aeon. It would actually fit him perfectly. For his story, I see him being a captain of a ship that was attacked by Cervantes. All of his crewmates were killed and he was left stranded at sea. He barely survived before being rescued. After getting back into fighting shape, he sets out to get revenge on Cervantes.

- A dark character that uses power from Soul Edge. I've heard the suggestion of reworking Darth Vader's style into the game, and I can see it here. Imagine a character who draws upon Soul Edge to wield dark powers that allow him things like lightning and telekinesis? He would have a two handed sword similar to Vader's, and he has his own meter for his power. They would have differentiate him enough to make sure he's not a complete clone of Vader, though.

- A bounty hunter with dual-hookswords. Imagine Kabal from MK (but without the powers) who wields two Chinese hookswords? That would be pretty cool. I would apply this style to a gruff, battle-ready bounty hunter who would be on the search for Soul Edge in the name of money.

- A witch. This is more on the "fantasy" side than "historical". After Z.W.E.I. and Viola, I would add a witch to the game. She would use a magic staff as both a blunt-force weapon, and to use spells on her opponent. She would be more of a ranged fighter than a close combatant.

- A ninja with an updated version of the Kunai + Shuriken style from SCIII. In general, SCIII styles from CAS could be expanded upon, but this is the one I'd like to see the most. This could easily be used on a Fu-Ma Ninja, maybe someone not who wasn't trained by Taki. Someone more bearable than Natsu, that's for sure. Imagine a stoic, yet inexperienced young ninja using this style? It would work well.

- A dual-style character, similar to this. After seeing Ferra/Torr from MKX, I would love to see a "big guy, little guy" double character design. The little guy would be on his back, there to deliver attacks, while the big guy does the bulk of the fighting.

Those are some of my suggestions. What ideas do you have in mind?

For me the main thing I want from SC characters is to have them ALL. But anyways, I think that another whip user would be nice. Not exactly like Ivy, Ivy has a sword that transforms into a whip; more like Castlevania characters.

Like Indiana Jones pure whip? Or maybe Quistis Trepe with a sharp piece of metal at the end of the whip?

Ever played the oldschool Castlevania games? I recall that in most of the games you start up with an ordinary whip, but you upgrade it to metal with something sharp at the end. So yeah, probably a bit like Quistis.

Some updated versions of SCIII special styles would be really nice to see. I still enjoy using the Fan and Wave sword disciplines. Though I doubt that anything like that would make an appearance in SCVI.

I'm hoping we see a character using longsword, I feel like that would be pretty cool. The closest we got is Siegfried and Nightmare using Zweihanders, but that's not quite it.

I would like to see CAS taking a bigger stance in Soul Series with more customized aspects not just in looks.
I think what we have is perfectly fine already. We can select almost any moveset (or really any with modding), select from quite a few weapons for each character and color edit those as well. I think that what some people say, that we should be able to build our own movesets is total bullcrap. But anyways, if you really want that, you can go back and play SCIII for a bit, that a lot of movesets for CaS, I like to use them, some of them are really cool.

I disagree, as long as they continue mimicking other characters' move sets its never fine. Besides there's no such thing as perfect.

I doubt many casuals of Soul Calibur play a modded game; besides playing dress up and selecting a few weapons, what good is that when all they do is copy bonus and original characters' move sets.

Well I agree with those ppl. Why do I want to play with a CaS character that does the same moves as the original? I might as well stick to that original. I respect the original move sets from original characters; CaS copying other's move sets who the hell are they?

I had already played SC3 CaS back then, but after playing Chronicles of the Sword, the fun of playing CaS was short lived because I keep thinking to myself Why do I want to play with a CaS character that does the same moves as the original? CaS in SC3 copies the move sets of bonus characters such as Abelia, Hwang, Li Long, Amy, Girodot, Revenant etc.

I don't see reason to continue playing CaS when there's originals. Its nice having cosmetic customization, but this is a fighting game put effort into making more unique move sets for players to build up upon.

Well think about how would you deal with everyone making their own moveset and then going online with it? How would you predict and read a custom moveset? How would you keep any kind of balance?

They don't create/design their own move sets; they select different move sets the developers placed in the game.
How would you keep any kind of balance?
Slap a bunch of move sets appropriate to a certain character, grab a bunch of competitive players have them duke it out, analyze shit, do some tweaking and if necessary, narrow down some moves.

I prefer a RPG system where a character levels up and learns a move set or so; here are some examples of games that feature such:
  • Scott Pilgrim, you learn move sets but in a linear fashion; not to mention you have an option of purchasing a move set.
  • Dragon's Crown, gives more flexibility allowing you to spend your hard-earned skill points on different move sets as well as upgrading particular move sets.
  • Grand Kingdom, take this with a grain of salt as I only based my experience on the demo version and on hearsay; its sorta like Scott Pilgrim, but they don't learn all the same moves for the same class of characters. I'll leave it at that.
I believe the move sets for CaS should be more customized; not completely unique.

Well, you know what, I'm not gonna argue with you or anything. If this is what you want, more power to you. I am just fine with the movesets available for CaS.

That's cool, I don't see why it would drive off some CaS fans anyways; nonetheless, it may potentially add more ppl like those you called bull crap on.

I am minimally interested in learning tournament banned styles just so I don't lose for free to CaS people online

What about Ares, the greek god of war? As far as I know, he wants to take Soul Edge and gave Aeon new powers. Also, one of Algol's victory quotes in SCV is "Very soon now, all gods shall bow to me!" (or something like that), it seems to imply that Algol wants to defeat the gods and take their places, and Ares would be a perfect choice to add, since he wants Soul Edge and he wouldn't let a mortal try to take his place.

What would his weapon be?

Considering he is a god, I'd expect something a little over the top for him, like Algol, after all, he would very likely be a boss if he entered. I had two ideas:

1 - Spear and Magic - Ares is commonly depicted using Spear and Shield, but I think that would be a little generic for him in SC, since he must feel godlike in comparison to the mortal characters. As such, he could use the spear for normal attacks, and having some magic among his special moves, maybe summoning arrows from offscreen, using fire and summoning chains for his grabs.

2 - Remake of Necrid's kit - Being the god of war, it would make sense if he had all weapons at the same time. Summoning weapons from thin air makes sense for a god, but the moveset would be different than Necrid's, since the latter's was based on SCII weapons. Ares could also have his own different special moves with a little bit of magic here too, so it doesn't end being just copying stuff.
