Talim game play

Record of a stream of Xephukai vs GranmasGotGame. GGG is topranked as Talim on PC.

I noticed:
  • @3:00 44[A] (CH on 2nd hit), 236B, 66B ,6 WNS [K], 3B --> 112 damages. Not sure if guaranteed after 66B, but work in training with [1:standing/2:guard all]
  • @3:40 When Sophitia whiff a 88BAK (and that happend a lot), you can punish with WNF B. It's seems guaranteed if you react quick enough (I don't think it was guaranteed in the video)
  • @11:35 Vs TAS AA, you can WNC the second A toward Sophitia's shield. So i you block the first A, you can WNC B:B both TAS AA and TAS AB
  • @22:00 Just a nice guess to end the match!
  • @24:40 He uses 1A+B LH with CE. I should do that more. BTW after LH 1A+B I like 44K and BT mix-up He also use CE after 66A+B (guard Break) WNF B for easy big damages
  • He uses RE cancel a lot. Maybe too much, but I should use it more
  • He uses 8B a lot. I dont really understand why, cause I'm never impressed by the results.

Listed in the order you wrote them:

- The WNS (K) isn’t guaranteed unless the opponent lands face down, so the best option off of 44A(A) is to do 6BB6~WNS (K)~4B(A) *partial charge*~BT AAB/go for oki/ try to tech trap
- I checked and you can punish both 22_88BA and 22_88BAK with WNF B:B though you have to pay attention to what string was used for timing.
- That’s correct, though an easier way to say it is WNC right.
- Nice.
- I rarely use this move, but from what I’ve labbed of it, CE is the highest damage follow up with the next highest damage coming from 44B6~WNS (K)~appropriate follow up(s)
- Talim’s RE game is good and should be worked into your game plan.
- 8B is plus on block, launches on hit, and if you guard crush the opponent with it gives you a free unscaled LH WNF B:B combo.

Haven't watched GGG much. Interesting to see another Talim who uses 8B as much as me. Been advocating for that move since the start -- shit is super good. Combo on hit, plus on block, guard damage 9%, moves forward quite far, goes over lows, has a beefy hitbox which often trades against people who step and press buttons. It's a very good scramble button, and if you do get hit, you're airborne and will likely take less damage. Hard to whiff punish, tends to leave Talim BT, which if they are recovering from something, you can usually do some shenanigans. Very good normal.

He's a bit scummy with the RE spam though. I think in time people will learn how to deal with that more. Since her RE absorption is slow and her RE attack speed is slow, you can sort of just step and deal with it like a normal RE, with the benefit of a counter-hit when she stance cancels. I generally step AAA+B most Talims who use RE, since they have a tendency to do WNC. Not every character has an easy/quick counter-hit option though. Still, RE-cancel is without question Talim's scummiest trait, and is super annoying and... stupid. Yet here we are, may as well use it.

I remember hearing from Moneymuffins, I think, that Xephukai thinks Talim is one of the best characters in the game. He's a great Sophie, but I have to admit, he is letting Talim get away with murder in a lot of these matches. Way too many unsafe stance switches going unaccounted for. Hearing his frustration and hatred for the character reminds me of my relationship with Sieg. I do super bad against him, even though I know he's not super broken, really. Think Xephu gets inherently on tilt against this character.

Admittedly, Sophie does not actually have a one-size-fits-all button to deal with every stance switch Talim has from a lot of her normals (surprised me). That said, she still has options, and he certainly should be at least implanting the fear of 66B on Talims who (stupidly) WNF back from normals on block. Doing stance switches on block just increases how negative you are, opening you up to some serious pain if the player knows how to punish you. Better to confirm the stance switches, and mixing up going into them on block or not. Against 6BB on block, Sophie can do 3A to punish all stance switches and go under a WNS stance switch. Downside, it's not a hard punish, and if the Talim doesn't stance cancel 6BB, 3A is an 18i and doesn't punish it and she can get punished for the -14, though Talim's attacks sucks for doing so depending on the distance. Would have punished it pre-patch, when I think 6BB was -18 (I think that was a thing). So a little tricky for her. I think BK works against WNS/WNC but won't really punish WNF, so you can mix up between the two, as well as 66B for the punish on WNF. I think 66B also trades with a WNC-K from 6BB too. Other stance switch buttons I need to experiment more with.

Sort of just makes me want to make that video I was going to make about how to punish the crap out of Talim, which would hopefully get people to stop falling for her silliness, so I can get better as a player faster.

I met Xephukai at the tournament I went to early last month and, while we didn’t fight, he still mentioned how he didn’t know how to fight Talim alongside literally everyone else I spoke to there.

I started watching more of his fights since then (he’s really helpful to watch considering how good he is) and every time I’ve heard him mention Talim he’s complained about how he doesn’t know how to fight her, which I find amusing.

Nice set!

Good to see you were both adapting & applying as the set went on.

I lkke usin 6A+B when the opponent is gettin up & they are at the tip of the range, but it’s difficult as a blocked/whiffed move will of course hurt. I also like to throw in “the cartwheel” (forgot the input) every once in a while as (I like that move.

That’s a solid Taki (in more ways than one, haha).
