Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

That reminds me, I asked Okubo on Twitter if we'll get new weapon skins for the current styles. Granted, my point was more about if veteran styles would get past weapons, but still.

As of this writing, I still have no answer.
It'd definitely be cool if they could give all the characters a Soul Calibur and Soul Edge version of their weapons. Either by bringing back old designs or creating new ones.

I miss Ivy's maces from SC2. There's a bunch of weapons from lost swords that were kind of new. Tira needs a hula hoop.

Still no word on CAS DLC? Seriously what is going on?
if we don't get CAS DLC this Tuesday, then there's still next Tuesday if they want to get it out in January.

Thing is, Namco never said or hinted that any DLC would drop this month. Everybody just seemed to start assuming that it (or an announcement) would come on the heels of v1.11 for some reason, and then that vague sense of timing started to snowball into a concrete expectation. But it's entirely possible (probable even) that neither is or was planned for January.

How about a real gallery with illustrations and high quality models? That'd be great, even if it's only eye candy. I mean, that was there in previous games, so I don't see why they chose not to include it in this game. The museum and gallery are there, but they are lacking imo.

Meh, you know, I can respect that it's tradition at this point, but I kinda think any gallery resources that are not a part of concept art already produced for the project is rather a waste of resources. Mind you, I also feel the same way about however much of the game's budget was pumped into that navel-gazing storymode with its un-ending hours upon hours of poorly written, badly acted, cookie-cutter dialogue set to light novel sketches.

So I guess you might call me a purist in general; I'm here for the gameplay and would just as soon every last dime was spent on building, refining and balancing the movesets and mechanics, character models, stages, netcode and CaS items. The rest I could really give or take, and while I'm not trying to begrudge or belittle anyone else's love of the bells and whistles, I must be blunt: I could really care less what's on the cover. It's what's under the hood that catches my eyes.

From the SoulCalibur Reddit thread on what to expect in the current patch.

Well, I'm all for gameplay, mechanics, and character models also, but even in some of those aspects, it seems to be lacking... Like, where the hell are 2P outfits? While it could be called "a waste of resources", I'm more inclined to call it diversity. C'mon guys, the roster is not so big, and the models/textures are not so hard to get done! So, I understand that a REAL gallery might very well be a waste of such precious resources, but where are those resources being put on? A palette swap for 2P outfits?! Hell no, I can't believe that. Maybe on upconig DLC characters? Perhaps, it remains to be seen, but even then I believe a little more effort could've been put into making at least alt costumes for our beloved characters; I'm not asking for 3 different outfits for each char (like they did in SC2), but just one.
About mechanics amd gameplay, I've got nothing to say. The game feels amazing, and the mechanics too (yes, even RE has its uses imo)

I’m still hoping that Cassandra will bring Sophitia’s Orichalcum and she can take her Katzbalger back in a trade.
Prepare for disappointments...
  • Omega Sword & Nemea Shield / Digamma Sword & Nemea Shield
  • Digamma Sword & Nemea Shield [2P] (maybe)
  • Dark Blade
  • Metesashi
  • Spine Blade & Ivan the Terrible
  • Valkyrie
  • Baker's Daughter
If she doesn't bring both Omega/Nemea sword I hope it ends up bringing Skull's Horn or Gothic Blade.

Yeah, I can't disagree that it's a stripped down experience. And I get that I'm a bit of an outlier in some respects. For what it's worth, I'd rather see any of the things you reference above as opposed to 30 hours of tin-eared dialogue. Who knows how many dozens of extra characters we could have if Soul Calibur was not beholden to nerdy expectations that it has to keep rehashing that same tired, weak as it comes story mode, game after game. I'd pay $300 for a version of Soul Calibur with all 70-ish movesets to date (including money spent for the pricey licensing to bring back some old guests), 40 classic stages, and every CaS art asset that could be sourced or reproduced from every game to date. Give me those assets plus a full lab, a simple arcade mode for single player, a versus and a team battle mode (online and off) and a CaS editor and voila: the perfect Soul Calibur game. insofar as I am concerned. Save the lore and the filler; I'm here to fight, not read unending pages of anime melodrama.

But so many gamers have such a sense of entitlement that devs have to try to make their games all things to all potential players, and for most genres aside from puzzles, if they even dare to contemplate skipping a story mode--even if that's never been the heart and soul of the game, or the source of its enduring popularity--they just invite scorn and the possibility of players organizing to refuse purchases on principle. Even if the devs wanted to release the multiplayer and single player components seperately, each for the price of a full game so that they could create both with zero compromise (or alternatively alternate entries between story and multiplayer focus), I think the whole effort would be like negotiating a minefield for them. But I'd pay a premium for "Soul Calibur Arena" as described above. I'm cognizant that I'm in a minority there, though, even among hardcore players.

Think i would actually be happier to see them fix all issues with the current, existing CAS parts before even bothering to release additional equipment. Otherwise i would just assume any new parts will also come with the same annoying limitations anyway. Stuff not sized or fitting properly. Items combined together or conflicting with others when they shouldnt. That really made CAS disappointing.

Yeah. I would love to use more capes but they're so damn floaty. The weapon-holding needs mending too.

agreed.

add to that clipping issues.

for example, I wanted to use 2B dress with Ivy sword style for one of my CAS. but the 2B dress clips with all of the Ivy style swords due to the way the character holds the weapon.

stuff like that and what you mentioned limits my creativity and vision for my CAS.

See i'm less annoyed by that issue because i assume there really isnt a decent solution to that problem. Clipping has always been around and i have always had to be aware of how stances and such effect certain dresses or outfits. Sometimes i'm ok with it and sometimes not.
