Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

Been losing a lot lately. Do I have to learn every character's block string to win?

Fighting games as a whole require match-up knowledge to do well in, so generally yes. As someone who is mostly a 2D player, I can say that Soul Calibur (from my experience) is very much a battle for knowledge acquisition. This is especially true early on where you can very easily lose to things that you just don't know how to deal with. That said, while I do think if you plan on being competitive, you will eventually have to lab out most characters in some capacity, you can do a lot of things during matches.

Labbing lets you perfect results, but you can still experiment with strings during matches if you forgo the idea of playing to win in favor of playing to learn, which is a much better mindset if you plan on doing well in the long term. There are also general rules of thumb you can follow to at least get mild understanding like:

- Most fast lows are probably punishable on block (-14 at least) and probably negative on hit.
- Most slow lows are probably negative on block, but plus on hit.
- Most break attacks are plus on block.
- Most blocked moves are likely negative in some capacity. (Exceptions exist, obviously)
- Most 12~14i moves are +2~+6 on hit (This varies by character, as some require higher advantage to be effective)
- Most 10i moves are negative or +0 on hit.
- Most 3B launchers are (likely) at least -12
- 8way launchers tend to be safer but slower

And so on...

You can play with basic understandings for awhile, but it will eventually reach a limit of worth. Knowing that they are negative and it's your turn now is only helpful in the short term, because in the long term, it would much better to know how negative they are: can you punish it, can they step-guard safely afterwards? Things like that.

That said, a lot of players in the mid ranges play this game very turn based (which it wholly is by nature), and as a result, you will find a lot of people mashing GIs after any move they do that is negative because of this. That can work for awhile, until you start facing people who bait GIs and understand the numerous options that are available to them when they are -2, -4, -6, -8, visa versa and so on. Once you face someone who knows the data, you'll find yourself getting blown up a lot more by not knowing it yourself.

--

Playing as Sophie, you get the luxury of having a good solution to every single problem in the game. Something you won't understand the appeal of until you play a character who doesn't have those options and you suddenly realize how frustrating it can be to not have a tool to stop someone from doing something you know they are going to do.

I'd caption it "Lame." Now can you take a break from celebrating how you turned the world's premier weapons-based fighter into a anime magic dueler just long enough to give me back my favourite nuts and bolts sword fighter, Amy, already? Oh, you turned even the version of her that comes before Viola into a spellcaster? Greeaaat...
That's a bit of an overreaction. They almost certainly have a social media team who does this stuff for them. Amy's coming soon. Like the update is out, so Amy likely isn't far off.

Every sign points to her being released on the 26th. Project Soul never denied the release date (despite doing so in the past to an untrue leak from a big, trustworthy source), they love announcing the date and then releasing DLC shortly after a big SC event (which is five days beforehand), and the recent update.

If this has all somehow been a series insane coincidences, and the event on the 21st ends with another SOON, I will officially lose all respect for them.

Not only would it mean they refused to address a phony leak, but the date will likely be April 19th (showing that they have a clear schedule planned out, but refuse to just come out and say it).

I won't lie, I'm expecting 26th, but we can't get too hyped. It still takes a long time to create a character. I'm super hyped, but I won't go mad if it's not on the 26th.

I will be furious, not because of them taking a while to develop a character, but because they never came out and denied the MS leak.

They have an obligation to their fans to keep them informed. Neglecting to address a huge leak that has garnered loads of hype would only be acceptable if it turns out to be true.

It was actually more of a dig at their apparent need to turn everyone into a whirling dervish of magical effects than a legitimate complaint concerning the timing of Amy's release. I actually don't let myself get too nonplussed about release dates generally--even for Amy, my returning main. And in this particular instance, they are actually ahead of where I would have expected them to be a couple of months back, even if Amy drops three weeks from now instead of one. So that comment was just set-up/context for mocking how enthusiastic PS is about the fact that they are turning everyone into wizards..

Actually, the only gripe I have about the timing of things here is that the dearth of pre-release content regarding Amy makes it hard to know, even in broadstrokes, how faithfully she has been rendered this time around. She has at least two new mechanics that they have fixated upon (and yet not really explained) in discussion and the few scant materials released so far, and both of them look like they potentially stop the flow of battle for effects. Between REs, CEs, and SC blowback, I already feel like there's enough that pauses/interrupts the continuity of a fight in this game and one of my favourite things about Amy was sitting in the "you should stay in motion as much possible in order to add up the damage and keep her viable, but the moveset accommodates that" groove. If that's been changed--and is suspect, knowing this game, that it has at least a little--it would be nice to know, regardless of when she drops. Other than that, I'd just as soon PS takes as much time as they feel is necessary to get her right.

As much as it's different, a lot of the magic is fair enough in my opinion, only really Grøh, mitsu and maxi really big me in any way. Most other characters are explained fairly well, like Sophie and Talim. Fir Azwel soul edge does some wack shit so that's something.

Regarding the development time, I really respect that. I'm happy to wait as long as we don't get some rushed and janky characters. Plus this is the first time IIRC that Amy will have a supaa haipaa new moveset. I never played her, so i can't say for sure, but I'm looking forward to it.

Meh, given that our two new characters this game are a super-saiyan import and a Noctis knock-off, I don't really see the need to further magicalize the traditional characters as well. I mean, sure, give Talim some wind powers: she is a wind priestess after-all--and in this case they didn't really alter her basic moveset; they mostly just augmented/nuanced the moves a little bit. But, while it's hard to say for certain with the limited info released so far for Amy, it seems she has had a more dramatic overhaul, when she already had a very compelling niche that didn't need to be substantially overhauled in order to accommodate more magic gimmicks.

For me this is not really about whether or not the change can be explained, post-hoc, as a narrative matter. It's about fundamental changes they are making to the game itself; I think we have enough magic zipping around the screen as is--I don't see the need to re-engineer classic characters in the same direction. So, I'm really hoping that the situation is not as bad as I imagine and that some of these changes are locked behind Soul Charge so that one can, to a certain extent, decide how heavily to rely upon them. /fingers crossed/

I suppose, then again, games are getting flashier nowadays it seems. While I can say I personally enjoy the direction, I feel the pain of a main turning into a wizard. Mitsurugi's sword isn't magic and he isn't either. I would of rather had a flurry of blows as a CE than witching hour but on fire.

Everyone in the game has always been anime and has always been a spellcaster, the only difference is that the spells were only included in gameplay in SC4, while previously, they were exclusive to lore and story purposes.

Wow! Mina is unbelievably strong O_O

This infamous online 1or3 A lethal hit set up that doesn’t seem to be air techable with it’s 66B+K ringout is really good not to mention her soul charge is beast.

Any word on if this is a balance issue or do I just don’t know what to do.

I’m hearing they plan to give her MORE buffs in the future... surely not though, like that would be in-fuckin-sane.

Any word on AMY yet?
I’m hoping she won’t take as long as the others.

According to Xbox :sc4amy1: arrives in 26th, this information has not been confirmed by Okubo or Namco.

But taking into account that she will be playable on the Weapon Master on March 21th and PC had a small update yesterday, so "soon" will be in a few days..

Plus they shot down a phony leak before, so it would be pretty crummy of them not to do the same with this one.

The fact they responded with a SOON right after this leak came out, instead of saying the information was false was pretty suspicious as well.

Well, there's certainly been a fair few, no doubt. But the lean has never been so dramatic as it is in this game, honestly. Both new characters are, each in their own way, the epitome of anime-magic design. The initial guest character is a magic user (which, fair enough--I don't know much about Witcher, but it seems to me that they did a pretty good job of faithfully translating his abilities, and the moveset is viable, if not exactly top tier). All well and good, I guess. I would have preferred a new down-to-earth(ish) character with legitimate historical weapon set (even if used in a predictably insane fashion), for the first time since Hilde, rather than the Emo Avenger and the Great Zantaro, but you know, you win some you lose some in the new character lottery, as regards your personal preferences.

But what I do think would be a mistake though is to take a classic character that was cut last game and then hand her back to fans as a fundamentally altered experience. Now of course, I don't know that's the case here; information has been scarce and you can only parse so much out of new mechanics described in a sparse couple of sentences. All I know is that I've seen just enough footage and heard just enough description of her new moveset to be a little concerned--if she goes super magic-gimmicky at the cost of a significant number of her legacy moves or her general flow, it's going to be a bit of a misfire for me and a tough pill to swallow, after waiting for her style to return for so long. I don't think I'd be alone in that. But we'll just have to wait and see--we've essentially been in a media blackout on her, minutes two info dumps, so it's easy to imagine a worst-case scenario. And at the end of the day, I feel they were pretty faithful to most characters so far, so, as I said, fingers crossed!
