Quick Steps (How to Learn Calibur)

Level Up Your Game was great, and it was long because they covered everything in depth. It was still full of substance, though. It takes a long time to explain all the mechanics in the game or go through all of the tools a character has. It felt like they went over everything I needed to know to play the characters they covered in those hour long segments, without too much chaff.

If this show becomes as good as LUYG that would be a huge success.

Hmm...Im not sure if this'll do, but for starters,

I was thinking since Dampierre was training punchbag, he should be the main man here XD
Nothing too complicated, just simple stuff and I think it will do.

I kind of like the idea of Dampierre helping players improve by serving as a punching/hacking/slashing bag.

It doesn't really have to be that long, something like Partisan's tutorial videos would be just fine, in terms of length and simplicity. You could also give it some sort of comical relief to keep weak minds interested, like the videos Namco made not very long ago. As for what should be covered, start with essential stuff like defensive and evasive techniques (blocking, GIing, JGing, stepping, etc), and then move on to more complex stuff like frames and techtraps. Between topics you should cover, A few essentials are:
  • A Video About Grabs: Many people complain about them, so you should help people understand them better.
  • About Gi and JG: Especially now with guard bursts, it is important for people to learn other defensive techniques than constantly blocking.
  • Gauge Management: Spamming CE's wont get you anywhere, although many inexperienced people tend to do it in most 2d Fg's. Explain what other things you can do with your energy, and how to use it wisely.
  • Positioning and Ring Outs: Another element usually complained about by scrubs is RO's and how "cheap" they are. Although they're not as prominent anymore, they will always play a key role in basic strategy.
  • Stances and States: While learning a character, many people realize that their character "suddenly" changes into a different "moveset". They don't know what states and stances are, and they usually intimidate most players when they learn about them. A video on how to use them properly would help a lot.
  • Custom Characters: Just because we don't want our community to look like stupid anime/ff weabos, a video explaining the basics of what looks good and what doesn't, and why making clones of other games/anime/comics is just plain stupid would be great. That way we might reduce the amount of ugly remakes online; I think it's an experiment worth trying. Special collaboration from Gatsu, Partisan and Pocky Yoshi would be nice.
Once you're done with the basics, move on to character specific videos. Don't make them to heavy, just basic character strategy , and what that character's weak spots are. In less words, what a character plays like and how to beat him/her.
Yeah... I'm really looking foeward to seeing this. Good luck!

i could do some chibi drawings or whatever of whoever the instructor or teacher character of the video could be. that way it's like they are talking to the audience and teaching them. it gets more interaction i guess.

Lols what a coincidence, I was just doing random sketching in Photoshop out of boredom

Yuh, they're not awesome, but I had the thought nontheless.
shoot. then you beat me to the punch. you're better at chibis than i am so i be happy to leave that position to you if it is accepted by the people making the vids and you want it. I won't be hurt or sad at all.

Thanx for love homie.
-But as far as detailing things, I didn't really have in mind dedicating episodes to specific game mechanics. For example, a whole episode on grabs and how to escape them and what to do etc. Then again, I'm almost working with Partisan on this so maybe we can conjure up something together. I'll have to do a test episode soon and run it by some ppl to see how it is. I only want to upload final products.
-Gauge management and Positioning are character specific things I plan on diving into during the tutorials. Of course the more complex things get the less effective I'm going to sound seeing as how I can't master 30 characters but the basics should be enough for anyone to pick up the character and win a couple rounds. I want this to be a "Get ur feet wet" kind of experiment. Perhaps down the line, we can get top players to go into further detail and provide full walkthroughs for specific characters.
-There will be no CAS discussions, no CAS episodes, no CAS anything. If you guys want to partake in that and feel it'll help the casual community. By all means go for it, the more Calibur stuff out there the better I guess but, I will have no part in CAS anything. Sorry.
-Stances are things I think can be covered pretty fast tbh. Unless its something crazy like SC4 Ivy stances, which doesnt seem to be the case for SCV with anybody. But we'll see. Let me know what you think.

So I've come up with a schedule of what I think we're looking like for the first 3 episodes. The logo is still being worked on and I would like to have a trailer even, maybe 2 weeks before it starts. Here's what its looking like:

1st Episode [Jan 22nd] - SCV Game Mechanics - Intro to 8WR, Quickstep, BE and CE, Ukemi, Just Guard, Guard Impact, and Throws.
2nd Episode [Jan 29th] - How To Use Training Mode.
3rd Episode [Feb 5th] - Pyhrra Breakdown

As far as the grudge matches go, I plan on having them be either FT3's or FT5's. Or maybe both. I dunno, we'll see. I'll run it by some people.
Unfortunately this show still needs a name, and the only thing going through my mind "Brave Souls." Any suggestions?

The analysis show still needs a name as well. Although, this is the last thing on my mind. I'm probably not going to do this if I don't feel the matches are worth dissecting. But hopefully they will be.

Can you call it something to do with Edges, and Sharpness?!

Blade Sharp. Sharp Edge. Blade Edge. Sharpened Edge.

Y'Know, gives you the edge, sharpens your skills, Blades, etc....

Also I believe if they understand Frama Data, they can understand this game. I think the most important thing to teach is about tc Highs, tj Lows, Step Verts, and JG/GI Strong Mids. Do this and you can do anything.

Why are we discussing the title again? I thought it's already decided to Quick Steps?

Still superior to School Calibur / Sharp Edges IMO.

I'm talking about naming the grudge match shows and the analysis show.
Cmon ppl, I love u but please pay attention.

Analysis show = Tech Talk (Close to Tech Trap)
Grudge match = Critical Finish

Quick Steps: Critical Finish
Quick Steps: Tech Talk

If you prefer names outside of calibur terms then post up.

[edit] For Grudge Match
Quick Steps: Tale of Souls and Swords (or Souls and Swords)

Analysis Show - Just Impact

Grudge Match - Burning Souls
- Destinied Battle

Main Show would be either Quick Steps/School Calibur. I feel both are good.
