Namco-Bandai Announces Soulcalibur II HD Online!

  • Admin
So there has been a furor during these past few days after it was discovered that Namco-Bandai filed a trademark for "Soulcalibur Lost Swords". Until now, we didn't really know what it meant. Companies file trademarks all the time, often just to cover themselves.

Could Lost Swords be an upgrade to Soulcalibur V? An RPG side-story like Soulcalibur Legends? Or perhaps a free-to-play version of Soulcalibur like Tekken Revolution? Well Namco-Bandai just wrapped up their Comic-can panel... and... nothing. No announcement of Soulcalibur Lost Swords. However, Namco-Bandai has announced an HD version of Soulcalibur II will be coming to PSN and XBL this fall.

The HD release will be from the PS2 version, and include Heihachi and Necrid as guest characters. Link and Spawn will not be featured. Included with the resolution upgrade will be several new modes, including online multiplayer! Masaaki Hoshino is serving as producer for this project, rather than Hisaharu Tago who has been responsible for Soulcalibur V.
I don't need to even talk about how exciting this news is; but let me just say that when it does come out, the 24/7 stream will be moved over to it.

I loved the first SC on Dreamcast and SCII on PS2, but since I never owned neither console, I could only play them once a week with a friend in a club. Once scII HD online comes out, getting used to a whole new (old) way of playing from the scratch will be too much for me, especially if VI is coming out in a year or so.
So, as much as I love SC, pass. :(

This game is too fast for online IMO. Gonna be lag tactics up the ass in this one. Single A into mixups, single B into mixups. All the good characters have some nasty, spammable shit. Mitsu kB2 into advantage on block all day. Nightmare 3B 2G all fucking day. Asta 66B as a mid, poseiden tide spammed to hell with the instant TC and improved sidestep in the move. Xianghua will be impossible to beat online with 3A/1A mixed in with 22B all day. Yoshi 1A shit is gonna ruin people's world. SC2 was when Yoshi took absolutely no skill/execution to play. Matter of fact, did any character take any skill to play in this game? Maybe Ivy and Taki, but even with Ivy you could rely on 33A into half life combo, her nasty 2A, 8B, and 4A+B into mixups all day without the command grabs and 5 hit JF. Taki iPORC cancels making people have to pretty much guess all day online. GIs having a different imput might screw folks up when switching between SC2-SC5. Return of retreat/advance guard along with while landing moves is welcome though. Taking damage in the air doing 1/2 the damage meaning folks like Manta will be back to jumping backwards after every move as well as trying to land Voldo's instant landing attacks again.

At least the low tier characters have some flashy shit of their own to try to compete. I know Maxi was the third worst character but at least he had some tools that us old school Maxi players have been dying to get back like 66A (2 hit mid mid long range, high damage mid step killer) 236Bg, sideways looping, 6bAA, 3B+K, FC 3AAA 100% tracking plus instant cancel into 2A if the opponent gets behind you (lol). Not gonna mention 6A+B because I feel the SC5 version of that move is superior. Yes the SC2 version had that full TC throughout the entire move even after he finishes, has more range and does more damage, but the SC5 version is a mid whereas the SC2 version is a high.

It'll be fun to revisit SC2 but I don't want to see this replace SC5.

don't worry, GIs will solve all your problems......

EDIT: they are improving the quality more than what we have seen in the trailer. In an interview/presentation they also stated they are adding a new mode, but they were probably referring to the online part.

what I am saying is that there might be more little changes

SCV will never be 'complete', I don't want namco to cover up the shit they made with an fucking update, let us have fun with SCII HD while they develop SCVI, in the right way this time.

There's a chance the netcode will be even better than sc5 or tekken since its the latest one, and also if mvc2 can be played online decently, sc2 should be fine considering its probly 5 times slower than marvel.

This is so awesome! I recall so many hours spent on my couches vs'ing so many of my friends. Crazy to think it was 10 years ago. I wonder how tricky it will be switching back and forth from SCV and SCIIHD. Somebody else mentioned that they did a similar thing with SC1 before SCIV, so here's hoping this is in advance of more SC news to follow. Thank you Namco for keeping the series alive!

I've been looking everywhere for some info on balance tweaks, so far I got nothin'.

They need to fix step-G. This way, all the naysayers can STFU.

Please make this happen, namco.

or better yet, release patches once the game is out just like they did with 4/5.

People who are hoping the online will be decent I doubt it will. If it wasn't created to have Online in the first place it will not run as smooth as SC V

Seung-Mina, Yoshi, Taki. Massive move lists for all - gonna love it. The game felt so much more fluid than the latter iterations, probably because of the larger move-lists and didn't they use motion capture at the time for the animation and not so in the latter games? Felt like you could cancel moves into anything and it all looked beautiful. Would like the glitches removed, I think that would be do-able.. here's hoping...
