Who are you to say they only had one chance?
In case you didn't know, Natsu appeared Project X Zone 2 when they could easily have used any of the "classic" characters. And guess what? They actually gave her enough characterization for her to win over some fans.

Not only that, but characters like Patroklos and Pyrrha still appeared in spin-off titles like Lost Swords and Patchislot. If they were really serious about "returning the series to it's roots" or "pleasing the fans", they would dropped those characters entirely and never let them reappear in anything, not even spin-offs.

If Natsu in PXZ 2 is any indication, these characters are not beyond redemption and should be given another chance.
None of the new characters are beyond redemption really. I think most of them a breath of fresh air to the series. PxZ2 gave her good chemistry with the other characters and she had some memorable dialogue. I also find her personality to be a little bit more interesting than Taki's (and I know I'm not the only one here who thinks so too). It would be disappointing if they dropped Pat and Pyrrha tbh. I think they've redeemed themselves enough during the course of the SCV story even though they both weren't really terrible characters to begin with.

I would just like news. Even if the news was we're working on ideas for a future release. Anything assuring that a new game comes down the line would be great. I mean they set up way so much shit in the artbook, to not follow through would hurt. I'd gladly give these new characters another chance.

I was with you until you said the last part. Having the new characters continue as replacements to the old would turn too many people away from the series (and unlikely, because Hoshino prefers the old characters). But yeah, I just need news.

Well certain old characters could still come back, Talim, Zasalamel, depending on how they continue the story Yun-Seong could return. Old milf Taki could be possible but she'd probably be a tad slower. Viola is so much cooler than Amy. I don't know how I was supposed to believe that Amy was a better fencer than Raphael. Also Li-Long's kid, Bangoo, and a new Korean. I mean there's room for improvement. If new characters don't cut it they could just release the old guys as DLC. It'd be scummy, but it'd work.

You know folks, (Mainly Nyte) anything said in this thread by this point is super unlikely to ever be considered by Namco as such freaking out over such discussions that you've all had (And that I've subsequently deleted) a million times over is not only pointless...

It's the definition of madness.

Speculate about the game not each other.

That's wishful thinking. Why do you think Project Soul booted out most of the female cast to begin with, after all 17 years can put you in middle age territory something project soul probably doesn't want.

I'm willing to bet if we see any of the females return in SC6 there aren't going to have aged day. I could be wrong about this but I'd be surprised if they do actually age.

I'd be surprised if they actually continued the time skip.

Well that's the problem isn't it? They kinda screwed up and they know they screwed up so now they have a choice, either try and salvage what they've already done or admit to the world they screwed up and try something else... Kind of a rock and a hard place.

Personally I don't blame Daishi, if he had had the time he needed he may even have been able to make his crazy story ideas pan out along with make the game on the whole as polished as the previous titles.

I just hope they haven't spent the last few years twiddling their thumbs like they did between 4 and 5 although to be fair then they thought they were done and only started again because the fans wanted it, support they don't seem to have in such abundance now, although if memory serves it was more than hinted early on they weren't going to be done with the series after 5 which was quickly retracted for whatever reason... It's not looking favourable in any event.

I don't know why but I have a feeling that if SCVI does come out they'll make sure it's a safe sequel. Maybe even a copy/paste of SCIV minus the Star Wars characters. After the last game's reception I can't imagine them trying to push the boundaries too much with the next one.

I kind of agree with you there, however is really such thing as a safe option anymore? I mean no matter what happens with SC6 people are going to be pissed with whatever direction Project Soul decides.

Which characters make it in SC6 alone is going to be a major headache.

Feels like a catch-22, really...

On one hand, if they continue the with current direction, they could risk angering a lot of fans.

On the other hand, if they regress back to the style that many fans wanted, the series could very well fall stagnant with no drastic changes or improvements to keep things fresh and interesting.

Yep. How do they change enough without changing too much? Hitting that sweet spot is tough especially with a series that's been going on as long as this one. I still feel like if Namco had started making major roster changes much earlier they wouldn't be in this mess now. We're so used to having certain characters in every single game that it doesn't feel like Soul Calibur without them.

Uh, yeah Daishi did nearly kill the franchise by making a lot changes the fans hated and casting doubt towards whether a sequel will be made. I know a lot of people skipped out on SCV after they learned about how half-assed it was, and it shows. Is it any wonder why he's no longer in charge? And when he was announced to have left, the reaction was universally positive? Anyways, let's look at the timeline between SC games (not counting arcade releases):

SB to SC - 3 years
SC to SCII - 4 years
SCII to SCIII - 2 years
SCIII to SCIV - Less than 3 years
SCIV to SCV - About 3 and a half years
SCV to SCVI - 5 years and counting

As I've said before, we're in the longest wait between SC games and we don't even know for sure if it exists. I've been waiting for SCVI's announcement since 2014, which is reasonable, but instead all we got was a bunch of shit we don't care about when it wasn't flat-out nothing.
Yeah let's crucify Daishi when namco didn't even give them time to finish the game

The problem is with that is quite a few characters that got removed were franchise stables. It would be insulting if you had to pay money just to play as Sophitia for example. That character should be in the game to begin with or not at all.
I understand what you mean completely. But we don't have control over the story.

Let's say the next games story mode is amazing, even after the large timeskip.

And the roster is based on this amazing story.

You're saying that if Sophitia isn't part of the story (which logically she wouldn't be) you still don't want her?

The way I see it a character like Sophitia is a series staple and should be in the game to begin with, not as DLC. Maybe people want her but they don't want to pay extra for a character that should be in the game to begin with. In the past we had a large selection of characters in the games from the start but now as the demand for unique characters as well as graphical fidelity has increased games have become more expensive to produce and the companies want to get more money for less of that more expensive work.

Now a character like Sophitia should be less costly to produce as a given being a series staple. In the past they've only really charged extra for Yoda and Darth Vader which were new characters and therefore had a bigger investment put into them. So really I think if they're going to charge extra for DLC characters they should be completely new characters to justify the investment in producing quality new characters.

Of course that probably won't happen as it's a riskier investment to produce new characters and hope people will pay for them than to rehash the old characters that have a more guaranteed fan base but I guess that's just the way it is now. In the past there were no DLC characters so it was a better investment to work as many as they could into the game although the cost generally tended to be a lot of clone characters or less overall game balance with less time for bug fixing. Now we have games like SFV that do the bare minimum only to add to it later. They seem to think now it's so much more expensive to develop games of comparable scale to the past they must make the initial investment as small as possible and hope it pays out enough to warrant more investment later on rather than make a more risky but comprehensive investment on what might turn out as a flop... By their standards anyway.

The days of reusable sprites are long gone... All the big companies are pulling these season pass shenanigans either charging extra for less work in the short run or outright fencing off what should be legitimate parts of the finished product. I'd like to think if they'd just you know, finish their games... Well lots more people would buy them. Call me overly idealistic if you must. Kappa
