Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

I asked this somewhere else and I thought I'd ask here. How would you feel if a new female fighter replaced Rock as the Americas rep?

What can we even say about Rock? He's easily the most forgettable character in SC that's been a main cast member and everything he does, Astaroth can do but better. His chances of returning here aren't looking good. That said, his exclusion would leave us a problem. In prior games, Rock was the sole representative of the Americas, and having him gone would leave an entire part of the world unrepresented.

So, what if they used this as an opportunity to introduce a new Americas rep. For example, a female Mesoamerican warrior?

Above is Maya from Killer Instinct, an inspiration for the idea.

I was thinking they could create a sexy, warrior-like female character who uses special twin daggers for combat. With magic being more prominent in the actual fighting, maybe she could call upon the mystic Mayan spirits to aid her. That sounds pretty cool. And besides, it'd be nice to get an actual rep from the Americas, as Rock is an Englishman who adopted the Americas as his home as opposed to someone who was really from there.

Yay or nay?
Well... Yay. I like her outward design. However, even though some people are saying that story in fighting games is irrelevant, there is no denying its role in appealing a character's personality and motivation to the players. Therefore, if they were to make such a character as two-dimensional as Rock, it wouldn't make for much of a change, would it? That's how I feel, at least.

I would also like to say that I have never taken this series' characters as representing various parts of the world, as we have never had an African representative (remember, Zas is originally a Summerian). This kinda makes sense if we remember the significance of the Silk Road for the series. Because of this, I think that the character and story designers are maybe finding it challenging to incorporate in a sensible way characters that are from other parts of the world. They not only have to make a character cool and interesting (which is easily done by appearance design and voice acting alone), but he/she has to make some basic sense as well, at the very least.

Rock is an awful fucking character and deserves to remain in the dumpster fire hell hole of irrelevance he's been in since his inception back in 1995. Good riddance.

No thanks. Really, NO thanks.

@Vergeben

So I take it even you never heard about Virtua Fighter 6 :(
Nothing yet no. But I don't have any Sega contacts at the moment. I am trying to find someone with an ear to the ground when it comes to them due to their recent business decisions all being really great stuff and Sega owning Atlus would hopefully get me an idea on what's going on with them too, which I'd especially like to know what all is going on.
Especially with VanillaWare's 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim going dark despite supposed to be coming out this year with its projected release date having come and gone with no update about it at E3 either for whatever reason.
But I should be used to VanillaWare games having super long development schedules at this point since it's a team of auteurs.
Maybe they wound up getting contracted to do something else and put the game on the backburner for the time being?
That's my own weird personal theory at the moment at least.

If they reveal Talim today.... the week AFTER E3, a time when that was more advantageous to do.... I can't help but stare judgementally and wonder why they thought it was a better idea to do it a week later.
I guess it doesn't matter. Revealing Talim is revealing Talim. A win is a win.
It's still pretty dumb though if they knew they were going to do it anyway that close.

What's with all these people who've defended characters like Talim and Mina all of a sudden talking shit about my boy Rock? Regardless of what you might think about his design (I'd say Mina is far more bland than anyone else, especially after SC1, but that's besides the point) how can you spend years whining about how Namco mistreats their fans for ignoring classic characters and then the next day say that classic characters that have been there from day one are bad and "belong in a dumpster fire"?

I've seen you hypocrites claim you speak for everyone and insult Cervantes, Lizardman, Astaroth, and Rock, to name a few. Just because we don't whine all day about them like they're our anime waifus and beg for their inclusion everywhere on the internet doesn't mean we're not big fans. Speak for yourselves goddamit.

What do you and Obama guy have against adding new females? Is Rock really that core to the series?
Every good fighting game must have a grappler in the roster. As I said to you, maybe you're too young to know the golden era of fighting games.
At the moment, without Rock, SoulCalibur is one of the few fighting games that doesn't have a real throws based char. Trade Rock for another fast (female or not) char is a nonsense.

Astaroth?

Thing is, most of Rock's moveset is just the same as Astaroth and Rock isn't exactly the most critical or iconic character to the franchise. It would be pretty easy to give his ground and air throws onto a new character while also giving them an actually interesting normal moveset as well. He's the most easy to replace of any of the semi-clones.

Considering pretty much the entire reasoning for keeping him (aside from the typical 'he was in the original' nonsense) people are giving is his grapples it seems nobody would miss him if we had a new more unique grappler.

Exactly. No one was really clambering for him to come back when he missed the cut in SCV, assuming they even remembered him.

Rock's never been as popular or has had as big of a fanbase as characters such as Talim and trying to compare the two obviously stems from a place of bias for Rock. Not only that, but while I do find Mina bland myself, at least Talim has some semblance of a personality and a fighting style that's completely unique, and has potential for a story. Attacking the people who happen to like a few girls and hate Rock is unnecessary and just makes you seem like you're grasping at some straws in a desperate attempt to defend the character you like. Like Rock all you want, I don't care, but him being in at the moment would mean a slot that could have gone to a more popular and interesting character, as Rock has never been popular, regardless of your subjective opinion. Don't have a go at people purely for having an opinion. It's just pretty rude.

They're both trash too. I was so happy when neither made it into 5. Talim I've already made my peace with because she's 100% going to be in, but I pray every night that Mina stays in her lane right next to Rock. Gone.

I hate every character you mentioned in there equally so lol

they could be one week behind schedule.

Astaroth?
Rock's gameplay is very different from Astaroth. Every attack Rock does is created to allow him to grab his opponent. Astaroth as a grappler can be an option (they tried in SCV but with little result). If they want to make Astaroth the grappler of SC, they need to change his gameplay very much.
I'm not saying that Rock must be in at any cost but trading Rock for another fast and short range char (something like Talim or Taki) is meaningless

I need to quote this as well.

Well, that certainly changed my opinion of you for the worse... Much worse.

You know, if all you guys want is underage tits to obsess over, why not just stick to DoA? They even spread their legs and pant for you when you lose, you'll love it.

I try to steer clear of personal attacks, so I'll just report this and move on.

Stop getting toxic over differing opinions, christ. Some people want trashy Rock, some people want trashy Mina, fine. Get over it. Stop being unpleasant about it and definitely don't say shit like this.
