Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

While you are correct, I cannot recommend SC3 to people unless they are willing to use a PS2 or an emulator.

With SC2, you can play on 360, ps3 or now XBOX One. And then the gamecube emulation seems to be the easiest and pain free of the standard def era of gaming.

I feel that the development philosophy going into SC2 is something we will never get again in a soulcalibur game.

So I love 6 for the revival that it is, but it's trying to compete in this esports, dlc, microtransaction streaming market. Whereas SC2 was a standalone package full of unlockable content and singleplayer modes. The great competitive aspect of it was the cherry on top, not the sole driving force.

I hope SCVII can bring us back to this approach with at least standard offline modes like survival, time attack, etc. Because unlockables don't seem to be something that will ever return.
I mostly meant in regards to gameplay, immersion and aesthetic design rather than accessibility of use. It's near impossible to get a PS2 emulator working on some machines (namely Macs, but some PCs too).

Which game in the series would you say is more casual friendly? SC2 or SC6?

I'm encouraging a friend to try for the offline content, but I can't help but feel that SC2 has that in spades. Libra of Souls has the weapon master component but it doesn't feel very fun or compelling to me...

At the same time SCVI has the fabled character creator though.
Well, the single player content is more engaging in SCII in my opinion, and certainly does not make you sit through so much god awful extraneous talking head generic dialogue. But if you're talking casual play that will include multiplayer, then SCVI definitely gives a newbie a much more substantial leg up than does SCII. But SCII is definitely the superior game in terms of just about every feature: design, gameplay, roster selection, stage selection, music. So if you're trying to turn your friend on to the series and also want to give him the best bang for his buck, go with SCII, no question at all.

Soulcalibur III is the perfect SC game to me, and I hope we get a revival of some of the systems/modes from SCIII in SCVII. COTS, Tales of Souls and Soul Arena were innovative ways to build off of SCII's accessibility and innovation.
Soulcalibur 3 was a gem. For a casual player it was amazing. The music, costumes, and modes were the best in the series to date for me. If they can combine the aesthetic of 3 and the gameplay of 6 then I'd be good.

4's roster as a whole, to be honest. Just add Hwang to it and I'd have no complaints. Would prefer Grøh/Azwel over Algol as well.

Also, sorry for diverting topics, but I just NEED to say this; Maxi is so god damn HOT in VI, especially with the messy hair

I like the messy hair because it's a "new look" for him. He looks fucking awful in IV. Or at least the character model is a bit too shiny so he comes off as creepy.

But I've noticed they can never decide if they want him to have sleeves or not. It's rather dull and repetitive!

so I'll just say that I like his 6 costume the best, and his 4 costume the absolute worst.

I’m still curious how an archery-based character would work. Probably has moves like the polearms up close but at reduced range (like Groh’s when both blades are attached) and arrows would be good for playing keepaway with some Cervantes shenanigans.
Like Ina-hime in Samurai Warriors: with bladed bow to fight up close and shooting arrows when distant ^^

My favorite Maxi's are 2,5,6
But Soulcalibur 4 Maxi is nightmare fuel and looks disgusting.
It like he's done every drug known to man then intentionally not bathed for 5 months. I despise his appearance entirely in 4 even beyond the outfit.
That being said, I'd be willing to give SC4 attire another chance if only because I really don't think the poor guy had anything going for him in SC4.

Which on that note...
SC6 Legacy costumes right now Okubo, do you hear me?

Speaking of Cassandra's glitch :
"

sorry for the poor editing skill

Cassandra isn't the only one. From what I can tell Amy on any map that has ring outs of any kind can 3BA people out of the map against low walls.
It always annoyed me, because despite it giving me a win it contributed to my rose PTSD like I wasn't building them enough.
Shrine, Snowcapped, Ruined City, Indian Port
3BA is only meant to ring out against no walls zones I believe.

If we do, I hope it doesn’t have the glitches the original version had. At least the AE version of SC3 fixed them despite the stripping of it’s content.

And looking back at SC4 and it’s models/designs, I’m sorry but these are some of the worst designs for the cast I’ve seen in the series. It feels like only half of the cast got out unscathed for the most part. Siegfried, Voldo, Nightmare, Ivy, and Astaroth in particular really got hit pretty bad with their default costumes. Taki and Cassandra on the other hand had it really rough with their rather poorly designed face models. And for Taki’s case it still hasn’t really improved that much from IV to VI. :/

SC3 is the best game in the series for casual players who are just after banging single player content, SC2 comes second. For online play SC6 is the current best. I would suggest this to your friend and let them make a choice where they want to start.

I still cherish the dream and hope that one day, Raphael will stop looking like a horse to embrace an appearance resembling his artworks.

You know, I always tried to avoid saying that. Simply saying he looks bad, or ugly or weird...
But honestly its refreshing to see someone openly and honestly admit, he bares an uncanny resemblance to a horse.

I hope one day we get a face for him based on SC3 or 2. He's looked awful since 4 personally.

I'd just recommend SC6.

Reasons:
  • This may sound shallow, but SC6 is the best looking game in the series, especially from a visual spectacle (visual effects on attacks and the presentation of special attacks like CEs). I'm not sure what your friend cares about, but I get the impression most casual players care a lot about graphics.
  • I don't think SC2 is that amazing from a singleplayer standpoint compared to SC6. Weapon Master mode is great, but otherwise, the other modes are something a casual player would probably only touch once. Also, Weapon Master mode doesn't last that long. I can remember I breezed through it rather quickly in the HD release.
  • SC6 is a lot more approachable gameplay-wise than early games in the series. No A+K attacks which are awkward to do on gamepad, movelists are more streamlined (every character has a launcher on 3B for instance), RE is a newbie-friendly mechanic, and it just feels smoother overall to me.
  • If he ends up really liking SC6, then that means there's potentially one more player playing online. And we need more online players for SC6.
So yeah, for any new player, I'd suggest SC6. And I'd tell the person to check out older games in the series if he feels like it, to experience the singleplayer content in the earlier games and to see how the series evolved.

had it really rough with their rather poorly designed face models.

It has always really bugged me that ever since SC4, the face models for some characters really just don't match their artwork AT ALL. Actually, it still bugs me too that, as an example, Siegfried's freaking hair ever since SC4 looks NOTHING like the art (imho).

I'm sure there are graphical and aesthetic constraints that Project Soul has to keep in mind when designing the models, but at the same time I am still left wondering why the 3D models don't seem to resemble the illustrated counterparts.

I think the low budget going into SC6 made it difficult for them to really do anything different with the 3D character models. They fixed the tired eyes and the clammy cold-sweat skin conditions so at least they dont look disturbing anymore. I hope when we get SC7 they make new more authentic models.

Sadly despite the good they've done for the visuals now, some still could look better, Taki and Sophitia in particular come to mind.
As you said the low budget is to blame.

I fear they'll completely botch the next batch of models though.
If anything I hope for the most part they follow the physical appearances the characters had in Soulcalibur 3, their faces looked pretty good there and Sophitia's promotional model looks fantastic there too.

Has there been any patch notes with update 1.50 I feel like a lot has changed moveset wise for a lot of characters and I can’t seem to find the information to confirm.

And was the recent Livestream from project soul worth catching up on?
