Greetings and some starter questions

Hi everyone,

First post here. Been stalking the forums a little some years ago when I played SCIV. Now I got SCV and thought I'd say hello.

I haven't played the game much online (only four fights, and I lost them all), and there's a lot about the game I don't really understand (I haven't begun thinking about guard impacts, just input, frame data or what have you). But so far I've been having fun.

During SCIV I mostly played Ivy, tried some of the others but I always returned, even though I had a hard time figuring out all her stances. So now with the next iteration, I'm wondering if I should go Ivy again, or try someone else. It seems she lost all her stances, which should make her easier, but on the other hand, not a lot of people are complaining that she is too strong. On the other hand, I was considering Natsu who it seems many people think is "op". I'm not sure who to pick, on the one hand I don't want this game to be an uphill battle against uneven odds, on the other hand I think I still find Ivy the most intriguing character (you can't button mash with her, like you can with Natsu).

Another thing. How many of you are using the D-pad on the controller for movement and how many are using stick? I've always used the pad in fightning games, but was wondering if there might be any benefit to learn to use 'the stick' instead?

Anyway. Hi and hello, and maybe I'll see you out there on some European arena.

Welcome! :D
I don't know too much about Ivy but Natsu isn't really op in my opinion, once you know her options she seems like a quick, short range Nightmare but safer. If you're on 360 I would just use the analog stick, it's quicker. The d-pad on 360 just sucks. On PS3 I'd use d-pad because it's placed well and doesn't screw you like the 360 one does.

But for characters to choose, if you want the absolute easy road I would learn Pyrrha. Natsu has weaknesses people just don't notice. Don't know about Ivy, she seems at least decent. I'd ask around about it or just try everyone out for yourself and not worry about tiers.

Sorry about that post being everywhere but enjoy 8wr! :D

Yeah, the thing about Natsu is just that some people complain so much, and some even say they get kicked from rooms for winning "cheap".
The thing about tiers is that when you're not _that_ good, it may take away from the fun feeling of the game to keep on losing, if you delude yourself into believing its because of an underpowered character.
Btw. I'm on PS3. And it feels like the pad is very good, but some moves involving circles and such seem easier using the stick. Maybe you can combine them...?

actually. people get annoyed when you do those natsu bombs and grab directly after for big easy damage. but otherwise than that people will just complain. someone was complaining about the poor low tiered Leixia saying that she was op. i laughed out loud of course. but ivy has no stances in this game. yes, you read right. she went from 5 to zero in one game. now she does everything from her sword. she's been so dumbed down that she's not even intimidating to opponents anymore.

if you are starting pyrrha is the best to practice with for the core mechanics. once you feel you think you have those under control then you can move on to the characters that take time to fully master and form more to your fighting style rather than doing the main moves that they're stuck with (ex. Nightmare). Natsu, Leixia, and Tira are perfect examples in that order. i mained Leixia and Tira shortly after getting the game and i love both of them.

I use the d-pad for everything. granted it took me a while to get used to that d-pad but that's mainly because i've owned a PS3 for less than a couple of months. good luck with your training.
