Platinum Pippa's Lackluster CaS Characters!

PlatinumPippa

[09] Warrior
I believe it's probably around time I make a thread on here after years of lurking, and show off some of my created characters while I'm at it. I've been using CaS for a long time, but I'm not great at using ExEq, so please don't blame me for not blowing your mind with these characters. Also I play on PS4, so I have no cool photo mode - really wish I had a decent PC right about now.

First set of character I'll show is actually a work-in-progress, but don't be fooled, I made these guys last December and never finished them. I recently updated their equipment since DLC has been released and I think they're decent enough. They are based off of the Major Arcana Tarot Cards, and overall a lot of my characters are pretty anime-inspired, so be wary of that. One more thing, I design my characters with game stats in mind - specifically elements. So every character has one of the following elements: Fire, Water, Earth, Thunder, Light, Dark, Typeless, Rainbow. Typeless and Rainbow being significantly less common, and usually just sticking to the first six. This impacts little about their design but their colour schemes.

Also, I should mention, these guys have nothing to do with the real life Tarot Cards. They do not resemble the card set in any way, they named themselves after these cards in universe. There is a reason for them being the cards that they are, but it's not the same as the actual Major Arcana cards.

First up is The Fool, he is the strongest of the Tarot Cards because of his ability. Some people (including myself), would describe it as unfair.
The Fool's ability is to absorb the magical energy of all those near him, not only rendering his enemies powerless, but also making himself unbelievably strong.
Fortunately, he is a passive individual, and isn't as evil as the other Tarot Cards... did I mention they are evil?

His element is Typeless, if you couldn't tell from all the dull browns. For being as unimaginably powerful as he is, he doesn't like to dress the part. Had I made him nowadays I probably would have given him some patterns, but I think he still looks very decent without them, so I'm honestly not in much of a rush to go change it now.

And here's some nice screenshots of The Fool using his freshly stolen powers. I know his design might be more boring than the rest, but I am personally a big fan of this guy, although that is probably personal bias.

Next up is The Magician. Fun fact, this is the only character in the Tarot Cards that I have not updated since his initial creation, as I don't think any of the pieces in Armour Packs A nor B fit him more than what he currently has. The Magician is an Angel, believe it or not. However, after losing in battle quite brutally a few hundred years ago, both of his wings were torn off, and his left eye was stabbed out. Longing for revenge against the warrior that defeated him so long ago, he joined the Tarot Cards, a group of powerful demihuman warriors that are stronger than even the biggest guilds.

I was always a big fan of designs that have different colours on the left and right side of the body, like I did here. When I saw Azwel's equipment coloured this way, I was pretty ecstatic, gotta say. It was never this easy back in SCV for me to make something like this. Again, his design doesn't use patterns either, I use them sparingly. I don't like characters that have too much going on, you know? Although if there is demand, I could definitely add something of a pattern to this fella.

His element is Light, being an Angel and all.

Some shots of The Magician using his red and blue powers. Fun fact, when I first made this guy I did his colours the wrong way (red on his left and blue on his right side), so it didn't line up with the swords, and I was quite upset.

You seem to be off to a decent start. I like the Tarot name theme and I particularly like the magician and the way you implemented Azwel's dual color scheme into his outfit. If I had any criticism it would be that you should use patterns to make the characters pop a little. I understand it can be hard to find decent patterns that fits without looking too gaudy but it is definitely worth it when you find something that works. The animal patterns are also good for adding texture to outfits. Other than that keep up the good work.

Yeah, these Tarot Card characters are pretty lacking in the pattern department. Most of my other characters use them a little more. But thanks for the tips, I might go back and put some on these guys.

Okay, time for the second batch of Tarot Cards. These ones have slightly more going on than the first two.

First up is The High Priestess. She is a half-Dryad, so part of her body is made of... tree. She is very proficient in healing magic, that's why she has the High Priestess title. She can also heal her own wounds by planting her own roots in the ground and resting. Her element is Earth, I don't think it needs any explaining.

62555

62556

62557

62558

Lot more going on here pattern and sticker-wise. The armour on her arms and legs has the weird fleshy pattern and I made it brown to resemble tree bark, which a good part of her body is covered in (I realise now that I should maybe have made it a little bit of a lighter brown, but oh well.) The tree stickers on her torso and face are meant to achieve that same goal - to a little less convincing effect. The body patterns from the stage 2 Malfested race and the stickers on the arms are meant to be cracks in the bark, out of which green light pours. Last but not least she has multiple flowers across her body, which are growing from her. These might be some flowers you don't want to pick.

Next up is The Empress. She is a Moon Elf, Moon Elves live in thick forests near rivers. They are rather sophisticated, but they don't like interaction with humans or other elf species. They sleep during the day and are awake during the night. They pray to the moon, as they believe it brings them great fortune and allows them to control water. Their magical power is halved during the day, but they are very powerful during the night. Recognisable by their blue skin and white horns, you might want to steer clear of their colonies, seeing as they're quite territorial.

62563

I'm a pretty big fan of the new Seraph's armour set, especially the boots, which will be quite apparent when I send the other female Tarot Cards. She previously had an impromptu crown made out of the Voldo mask, which is still on her head, but I added the Seraph's Helmet and I think it looks pretty good together. Little upset you can't do anything about the floral pattern on Mi-na's hip skirt, but oh well. Not much else to say here. Her element is water if it wasn't obvious.

Last up is The Emperor. He is a Sun Elf, and got a bit of a dynamic going on with The Empress. Sun Elves live in scorching deserts, unlike most other kinds of elves, who live in forests. They're essentially polar opposites of Moon Elves; they're weak during the night and strong during the day, they pray to the sun instead of the moon, they control fire rather than water. They do not have horns, rather, they have small wings on their ankles which allow them to move very fast, even through the sandy desert.

62581

I went for a kind of half-tribal design on this guy, so he has the Savannah Wrap, the tattoos and the pattern on the pants. The loincloth on the Wretch's Fauld worked great here in my opinion. The Wretch's Gauntlet and Greaves I also like a lot here, because they have a very sun-like design, especially when given warm colours. He uses the same Voldo crown as The Empress. His element is fire, I don't know why I even mention it anymore.

Nice, seems like I jumped the gun a little on my earlier criticism. I like how you used patterns to give the arcane armor a bark like texture on The High Priestess and adding flowers to give her a plant like feel was a good touch. The Sun and Moon dynamic you have going on with The Emperor and the Empress is cool and helps show how opposite they are. I definitely noticed more ExEq use with this batch which is good and your use of patterns and stickers seemed appropriate. All and all this was a good batch.

I almost forgot I made this thread, but here I am! And I bring with me three (or four) more tarot cards.

The Hierophant is a Papilio; a race of butterfly people comparable to fairies, but with antennae and without the eternal youth - although they do age notably slower than humans. In this world, fairies are human-sized, while pixies are about the size of a hand. Papilio fall in the middle here, on average being only around one metre tall. They are usually not hostile to humans unless their territory is being damaged. This one, however, is an exception. Being part of the Tarot Cards, anyone who enters their island is immediately considered an enemy, and will not be shown mercy for disrupting their peace.
She specialises in support spells, as she is one of the weaker Tarot Cards, but still faces little trouble in beating most humans.

62743

62744

62745

62746

All of The Hierophant's armour is covered in the gradient pattern, and this definitely won't be the last time you see me use it, as it's one of my favourite effects, especially on Rainbow elementals. She might look a little young, but rest assured she's probably older than you. I thought Talim's wind moves and energetic attacks would fit great for a butterfly person. I kinda thought the Seraph's Helmet looked silly when I first saw it, but it has grown on me, which is in part due to the amount of colour slots it has (same story for the rest of the set). Also Voldo's chin ExEq works nice as fake shoulder pads here. Well, they wouldn't protect you much, but they look nice, at least.

The Lovers is a duo that share the same card. They are the same element, and they only fight together. In fact, they almost never leave each other's side. In order to fight in sync, their fighting styles would have to be similar, and as such they fight mostly in the air, since they are both adept flyers. You'd better bring a ranged weapon if you plan on fighting these two.

The first of the two is this scaly fellow. He is a Dragonoid, which entails that he actually has a human form normally, but transforms into a dragon to fight (I might make a human version of him one day). Becoming a dragon allows him to fly and breathe flames, as well as get a significant boost to his physical strength, allowing him to swing around a huge sword with ease, however, it drains magical energy, so he can't stay in it constantly. In his human form, he is by far the weakest of the Tarot Cards.

62747

62748

62749

62750

Even after two armour packs, the Lizardmen still have an absolutely anemic selection of clothes to choose from, quite sad (didn't they have an armour set in LoS?). They encourage some ExEq use at least, so I did that. I used Voldo's mask as some sort of helmet, and I think it looks very nice. I also put the steel feathers on the serpent attached to his fauld, and used the Helmet Ornament just because I had another open slot, but I couldn't think of what to put. Not all too much to say about what went into the rest of his design, seeing as I couldn't equip a whole lot. I guess he has the feathers on the back of his head, that looks pretty cool at least.

Then here is the other half of the duo. She is a Firebird. They are the flamy equivalent of Thunderbirds. Being a Harpy, means that her arms are wings, but obviously I couldn't do that, so just imagine it. She is extremely fast in the air, which makes up for her lacking performance on the ground. She mostly fights using powerful fire spells, but can dish out some mean kicks as well. Her wings aren't made for fighting, but they are ablaze while she flies, so in theory they could be used to burn her opponent.

62751

62752

62753

62754

I think I love the Seraph's Leg Armour a little too much, but it has four colour slots, so how can I pass it up? Not a lot of patterns going on here since it's mostly armour, but there are nice gradients on her wings and feathers. I also gave her the Savanna Necklace to hint to the Native American inspiration behind her race, and I liked Taki's mask here to act as some kind of beak-armour, even though she doesn't have a beak. Thought it went nicely with the bird theme. No ExEq here, but I don't think her design suffers from it.

The Chariot is a centaur - a White Knight specifically. White Knights are a species of centaur with beautiful white fur and a passion for justice. White Knights are usually warriors, most of them very skilled with longswords or lances, and they adore covering themselves in shining armour. It is an honour to them to be mounted by knights and ridden into battle, whereas most other kinds of centaurs despise it. This specific White Knight though, is what you get when its sense of justice is severely warped, and it starts fighting for the wrong side. The World has granted him a special suit of armour that allows him to move much faster and hit harder than would be possible through normal means - and to test this, he killed the strongest warriors from his colony. Shortly after this, he joined the Tarot Cards.

62755

62757

62758

Oof, I tried to make this guy a centaur but he turned out more like a goatman. Guess I couldn't have expected to make it much more convincing. He used Voldo's mask as fake shoulder pads before (think he had the Steel Gauntlets), but they went kinda well with the Wretch's Gauntlets, so I decided to leave them. Again, a fully armoured character, which doesn't allow for all too many patterns (apart from maybe the scales, which don't fit him). His cape is kinda cool though. I like the Christmas pattern on the outside and then the cream yellow western one on the inside. Could've probably put something on the loincloth, but it's in the past now. His element is Light.

Another good batch here. Your color arrangement is on point with this batch. I really like the knight centaur concept for The Chariot and the duo concept for The Lovers.

It's not that your CAS are lackluster, it's they aren't coherent enough. You gotta carefully research what you want your character look like. There's no shame in googling for accuracy. Then you can tailor it to your liking.

Hierophant
Go for a cutesy, pastel and/or brightly colored, modest, gentle, ladylike demeanor. Butterflies and fairies are synonymous with the season spring.

Armor represents toughness. If you ever looked at most armored clad gals, they are like Hilde from SC series. Or fansevicey like Ivy in your case(which I'm not into).

Leixia's 1p costume design or something like it, is the perfect representation of butterfly fairies. Spring leads to flowers. Flowers lead to dainty and elegant butterflies who dance. Talim style is a good choice, but the outfit(bar the wings) is similar to Empress. Your butterfly fairy looks like a dominatrix, yet fights like a dainty fairy and that's a no go.

Emperor
Honestly, he doesn't look like an elf. However, the color scheme and theme is on point. Maxi style is a bit odd, but points for originality. Perhaps this hotblooded elf is a martial artist?

If in doubt, Just look up sun elves. Specifically males. I would suggest Raphael style, but again nunchuk sun elf does sound nice.

Empress
She actually isn't that bad. I rather give her Ivy style because moon elf ladies should incorporate magic in their attack. Plus, she's domintrix looking with issues. You could also tweak her slightly to be more, but that's up to you.

High Priestess
The High Empress feels like some demon princess from western rpgs(unless that's what you're going for). I see a flower, but I don't feel that mystical, mysterious, ominous, tree-like stuff on her. Just some demon gal. If she's mixed with earthly and tree stuff, put more emphasis on those kinds of color and equipment.

The Fool
More like The Foolish Thief. I wouldn't even change him since he's a thief. I'd put a style like Mitsurugi or Raphael, but again that's if he's a thief. Mitsu style empasizes reckless hardhitter who is steady while Raph is more stylish, aristocrat at heart, pompous fool. Azwel or whatever is little too much since the fool knows he's a fool because only fools steal when the whole idea is fool-proof.

The Lovers
For the Dragon dude, I await his human form. Then I'll review him.

For the Harpy lass, it's actually not that bad. The problem is she doesn't have a trace of mystic Native American-ness. I'd ditch the Taki style, ditch the mask, make her skin tone and hair color to look like a Native American like Pocahontas or Sacajawea, add some ethnic look to make her less animu, and finally give her Seong Mi-na style. Think about it, animu ninja harpy would be mean ninja or assassin costume with feather motifs and stuff.

All in all. You aren't lackluster. Keep on sharing.

Been a while! Haven't been on SCVI in a bit because I recently bought a Switch, and I've been mostly playing on that. I return though, with some other Tarot Cards. Also, in response to Pocky-Yoshi, because he had quite a bit to say to me:

Talim style is a good choice, but the outfit(bar the wings) is similar to Empress. Your butterfly fairy looks like a dominatrix, yet fights like a dainty fairy and that's a no go.
I listened to what you had to say about the Hierophant, and I did spend quite a bit of time in the creator with those thoughts, but I didn't fully act on them. I did end up changing her design quite dramatically, but the pastel scheme didn't sit quite right with me. She might be a fairy(ish) person, but much like the rest of the Tarot Cards, she is in fact quite evil. Something about making her too cutesy didn't really work to me. I ended up settling on a design that was similar in colour scheme, but looks a lot more weird and fairy-esque. It's something that I could actually see a magical evil fantasy fairy wear. Thanks a lot for the feedback though. (I'll post an updated picture later.)

Now, here's the first bit of oversight I've been called out on in my lore-writing. When I made the Emperor - or rather, the Sun Elf race for this, I wasn't aware that they were even an established thing at all. I'd heard of Moon Elves, who I gave a bit of a spin on, but I thought I was being (mostly) original
about it. As a direct result, my version of Sun Elves have nothing to do with the generally established Sun Elves from other media. My Sun Elves live in hot deserts and control fire. Sun Elves in other media (like D&D) seem to be superior, or at least feel like they are superior to other kinds of elves, while here, they are not like that at all.

They do prefer fighting with martial arts, being the least sophisticated of the elf species in my story, and are generally easygoing - qualities that almost seem like I made them opposite from real Sun Elves on purpose, but I assure you this is not the case.

I agree that the High Priestess doesn't feel very...tree-like, but as of now, I have yet to come up with a better design for her. Just do know that I am planning to overhaul her design.

The Fool's power is to steal others' magical energy while they're within his radius, so he's only ever as strong as you are, or were. For his design, I wanted to make him look unsuspecting. Apart from a few bits of armour, he's wearing relatively normal clothes to blend in a bit. Most would just write him off as an adventurer with the way he's dressed. Azwel's style comes from him fighting with magic exclusively.

Fair criticism here. I did mention her Native American roots, and then proceeded to just not show it in her design, kind of an oversight. I'll add her to the list of characters in need of an update. As for the anime-look, I draw a lot of my inspiration from anime and eastern games, so that's where that comes from.

Now for the promised Tarot Cards!

It shouldn't be hard to tell why this guy is Strength. I should re-iterate that these characters are not the Tarot Cards that they are because of what the cards actually mean. They are titles they assigned themselves when they formed a guild / cult. Strength is Strength because he relies on raw physical power to get the job done. He is a Troll, a purple one at that, which live in arid deserts and fight just about anything that steps close enough. Trolls have regenerative powers, and these purple ones need very little water to survive, which is how they can even survive in areas where water is so scarce. Standing at over three metres tall, it isn't hard to see why most avoid conflict with these creatures. Strength was previously a Troll champion, which means that he was the strongest in his desert, and later joined the Tarot Cards so he could fight more.

Wheel of Fortune is a robot. Not a cyborg, she is completely mechanical, and runs on magical energy. She, or it, rather, can be very powerful, but also very weak. The attack it uses depends on what it spins. Spin the wheel on its back and hope you get a good spin, because if you don't, Wheel of Fortune is dead weight. While unable to properly think for itself, it can be assigned task that it will follow dutifully until told to stop.
Wheel of Fortune was built by an inventor named Gero (dragon ball reference), it was one of his many creations. However, he made it stronger than anticipated, and as a result, when he got an unlucky spin, Wheel of Fortune went rogue for a while and fled his base. Eventually, the wandering robot was picked up by the Tarot Cards and made to believe this was its purpose all along.

The Hermit is an electrical golem, meaning that it's a husk that runs on electric energy - without it, he cannot function. This golem is quite versed in magic, though, and before he runs out of power, will summon a thunderstorm that allows it to recharge itself. The Hermit is a great fighter, but doesn't think outside of it. It spends every hour of every day patolling the island that the Tarot Cards are based on, taking it upon himself to defeat any intruders. When they have meetings, he is not present. Electrical golems are man-made, but whoever made The Hermit is probably long dead, as he's been active for at least a few hundred years.

Hier 5.jpg

Definitely more mystical now, but I kept the same colour scheme as before. I am personally a big fan of the book-necklace thing I gave her.

Strength is strength. He's stereotypical, but coherent enough to like. Good job.

Electric golem feels more like some yellow armored dude. When I read golem I immediately thought big heavy hitter like Strength. I also thought if he's some dude powered by electric, he should probably look it. Like a lifeless mannequin relying on electric.

Hierophant is much better and I actually I like her out of this set. She doesn't look evil, but she makes me think of Viola wearing that costume. Oddly enough, I can see her wielding Viola's style from SCV.

Hm... you have a unique style of CAS here, and i like it that they're all theme based. I specially like The Empress, The Chariot, and The Wheel of Fortune the most. Tho i think
The Empress could fit the Ivy style more imo... but she still look pretty awesome.

The Chariot maybe fit to Siegfried style too, since he looks like a heavy hitter knight... so i think a large sword could fit him more.

And... The Wheel of Fortune looks pretty creepy and the voldo style fits her really well.

Btw, looking at your arcane theme CAS here... i just thought about something... maybe my BattleAngel character could fit in as well? you know, the armor style look pretty similar. You can see her in my profile pic or maybe check her out in my CAS thread.

Alright, it's been a while. In my absence, I have made no new Tarot Cards.
But, I have updated some of the old ones. This is because I finally bought SCVI on PC now that I have a proper one.
I actually made these characters back in November, but I never thought to update this thread.
No fancy action shots this time, because I'm very lazy.

544750_20200218011209_1.png
Mostly a colour scheme overhaul here, but I added some extra parts. I like the mask as decoration on the jacket, and also gave him a gun. The earrings are cool too. I think the white instead of brown helps make him look stronger.

544750_20200218011740_1.png
The Magician didn't change all that much either. I gave his armour more of a pastel colour, over the obnoxious shade it was before. Added the tiara on his hat for some detail I felt was much-needed. Also, the spellbook floating at his left hand.

544750_20200218013222_1.png
544750_20200218013255_1.png

544750_20200218013328_1.png
The first dramatic overhaul. I always thought the High Priestess looked bad, but I never knew how to fix her old design, so I started from scratch. Kept the treebark armour, also added glowing incantations all over her body and gave her a horn. The cloak and the wheel behind her help sell that at least at one point she used holy magic.

544750_20200218015327_1.png
I would never even dare compare this version of the Empress to the old one. I was extremely happy with how this one turned out for a long time, and I still love it. It actually took me a very long time to finally make the Emperor, because the Empress just looked so much better than him. Made her look more evil and empress-like. Silver armour because in alchemy it is associated with the moon and femininity. Hilde's coat is the best item in the game.

544750_20200218015854_1.png
544750_20200218015635_1.png

544750_20200218015910_1.png
The Emperor is pretty pattern-heavy to convey a tribal theme. The new armour set suits him well I think. I really like how he turned out, but I oddly don't really know what to say about him. Gold because in alchemy it is associated with the sun. Not sure why I added the feather thing on his back, but it's staying now.

"Lackluster" my fluffin' tail. These are awesome! Really cool creations all around, and I like how each has a theme, backstory, and creative rationale all bundled in together. Have to say, I find the red/orange stripes on the Emperor particularly striking. Very vibrant.

Only one I'm not sure about is The Fool, and while I know you have your disclaimer up there about them just "naming themselves" after a Tarot deck, I can't say I see any real connection in design or theme between the character and his namesake. Feels like he'd have earned/taken a title like "Justice" or "The Tower." Your others all have some good visual connection between their design and respective themes - he really feels like the odd man out. I do like his design, he just doesn't look the part.

Still, the designs themselves (independent of any story ties) are pretty snazzy, and I'll definitely be on the lookout for more of your characters!

The Fool is The Fool because he's something of a Joker card.
He's only ever as strong as his enemy. I thought something of a wildcard character like him would best fit The Fool.

Thanks a bunch for the compliments by the way.

It looks like it's been a couple of years since Pippa posted here, so questionable they will ever see this, but I just want to observe here how they combined forced perspective, the angle of the object, a clever use of just the right sticker in the right place and dimensions, and both saturation and light gradation contrasts in order to create this incredibly effective impression of a void or the torso here. This fairly next level technique, imo: wish I noticed it in time to give props likely to be received, but worth mentioning now--though, granted not sure there's anyone around to notice it at this point!
