So, how do you feel about SCIV's life-span?

Personally, i'm not happy with our community. The SF, Tekken, Smash, Marvel and even the Guilty Gear communities have been playing their game through the years, going out of their way to extend its life-span time and time again even when the masses considered them dead. Tournaments still run for the older installments of most of these games and the competition is just as strong as ever. But here we are, the Soul Calibur community, sitting here, willingly accepting the fact that a game most of us love is dieing and aren't doing anything about it.

I don't care how you feel about SCIV as a game, or if you'd rather play SCII instead. That is not important right now because lets be honest, the same thing happened to SCII even though SCIII was horribad. Just because other games that are "born into popularity" have been released doesn't mean that SCIV has to disappear because of it. Its not like we're only allowed to play one or the other. So why? What is it about our community that makes it so easy for us to fall asleep on a game we obviously enjoy? Its like SF and T6 walked into SCIV's room and hit the snooze button on its fifteen minutes of fame. Its like this, I don't believe SCIV is without saving, its just going to take some more effort on OUR part so i'm going to keep fighting the fight. It'd be great to have a community behind me thats still willing to compete.

And think about it this way, we want SCV right? Well what better way to get the game out than to show that we actually care to play it still? Because I can see where Namco wouldn't be too excited to make another Soul Calibur game for us with the way SCIV has been supported. See how fast T7 was announced? That could've been us.

JUST SAYIN'.

Grass is greener, dime a dozen opinion, etc. etc.

All I will say at this point is either support the game or don't. You're honestly stuck in the past - most people who still come to this site are people who do try to support the community whenever and however they can (though I think we need more specialists, I'm not going to go off on tangents), newer people trying to understand the game, and the occasional person who bitches because they feel like they've been wronged by the community.

And, with that, I'll say that, from the time I've started lurking these boards until now (though things seem to be improving in terms of something I can't put into words this very moment), it seems this community (8wayrun) has suffered from a thousand men of thought for every one man of action. Just saying.

Well, SCIV has been out for 2 years about and I think its still pretty alive even though some of the better players refuse to play because of online or loss of challenge! I still find new players all the time so I don't really see a major problem. My 2 cts!

There's things I wish were different, but the Soul Calibur community is still awesome.

I hate our community being compared to other communities because their games get support from their publisher, so it's easier for them to keep things going. When was the last time Soul Calibur received some damn support?

Competitively, SC4 died last year. Even so, the game is still being played by those who still love Calibur. Plus people stay on 8WayRun, so Calibur isn't going anywhere. But new players aren't going to jump in this competitively because they would get that ass beat, online players rarely jump to offline, and people rather play newer games, so it is what it is. Only way people are going to start playing this game again en masse is when a new one comes out.

If it was that easy to get SC5, we would have it by now. Only reason T7 was announced is because they did such a shit job on the console release of T6 which sold less than Calibur.

If it was that easy to keep this game alive, more people would be doing so, but I see alot of talk on this forum but only a handful of people actually keeping the game alive. And if there's something about this community that you don't like, change it. Actions speak louder than forum posts.

Just sayin'

How do I feel about SCIV's life span? Um..........what "life span"?
It's "life span" only dies if you let it go, right? Not happening =p.

Has nothing to do with us. We make up probably less than 2% of the ppl that got the game. It made plenty of money. More than t6 I think. It doesn't depend on us if there's going to be another calibur or not.

Once Namco stops dicking around with Tekken, they will make a new Calibur, but we make up less than 1% of the audience that bought the game. They're not going to make business decisions based on what we do.

But whatever, Calibur is still the shit and people still play it. Just worry about that and nothing else.

I agree with everything posted so far, outside of the me being stuck in the past part. I realise that actions speak louder than forum posts, and i've done my best to keep the community where I am alive and kicking the best I can with my small influence as a player. But i'm more so trying to find out where the "competitive SCIV is dead" mind-set is coming from. If the people who used to compete are still playing and are still willing to compete, whats dead about it other than some of the more powerful people running a half-way regular tournament for the game?

I think the organizers are as much into the "the game is dead" mind-set as the players are and THAT is what i'm not liking. I mean, honestly, even without the support of the companies we could be doing big things with ANY game honestly. Think about what the Melty Blood community did when people were ready to say fuck it on the game, they grabbed one tv, one system, and ran a tournament in the middle of a public park with an open outside-outlet for a dollar.

I just have never really seen that much dedication from us at all, ever. (Speaking specifically about keeping the game fresh there.)

im quiting after FSAK because of bans, I would play more if I could use the character I enjoy most and spent hours honing my skill at.

SC4 isnt dead imo whenever i go online i play 20plus different people each time be it ranked or player. now whats killing SC4 is the elitist attitude that people have!!!!!!

ok so what, you've been playin SC since SC2 ,you have expierence that some/most dont why not share some advice on how to better learn a character!? anyone can say go to the forum and look up your favorite character, but how much does that really help when a person is entierly new not only to SC but fighting games overall? its overwhelming especially when everyone bitches about this character is broken thats too powerful. it turns people off!!!!!

when i first started playin SC i was lucky to have the jaxel tournys to go too and play with people that knew the game sadly those days are dead and gone all we have is online or 2 or 3 friends to play with offline more depending on your region.
you want a community stop being assholes online use mics so you can talk during matches explain why this works and that doesnt instead of bitching you want a scene help build it and stop killing it

my 5cents

Personally, I hate it too. After the realese of smash bros. brawl I quit smash to come into SC community, and have enjoyed it more and more. But around the beginning of the year I noticed it dying out alot, and getting worse and worse, and even I'm debating of staying.

BUT imo I think I know the reason why alot are leaving, at least I know the reason why i'm done after NEC.

1. There's too many emos here. I mean the majority of people that I've seen that play this game are usually crying and seem like they're fully pumped with estrogen. I mean, I know there is alot of gays in the community but please keep ya hormones to yaself or leave it at home, not on the game floor and the threads. Don't get me wrong, i'm all about some hype and grudge matches, but there's a difference between "King Ace, if I win this you my bitch for the rest of the day!" and "I heard King Ace was a bitch, I heard he didn't blah blah blah blah" when King isn't around. Keep ya gossip to yourself if you don't know, this isn't a soap-opera.

2. Stop the bashing of n00bs. Rather you realize it or not, the majority of the community is in the online forums. I mean, I'm all for telling a n00b he sucks when the time is right, but alot of times said n00b usually asks a question or say something obviously wrong he gets clowned over and over. He won't no nothing about the game and still gets clowned. This makes alot of people quit before even starting, and everytime I see it I think "well there's another gone" and true enough they leave.

These are two things that make me leave, cause man it's hard to be around a community that's full of this. I dunno, maybe the SF and Tekken communities are like this too, and if that's the case then I'd leave those too, but something must be happening for them to stay. I know coming from ssbm alot where friendly, still had assholes, but alot where friendly. There was never a "oh you fuckin suck, get off the stick you fuckin' n00b, that NEVER works!" etc etc, and in that case it keeps in fan base besides just being popular (and don't give me that bs of SC4 not being popular, it sold more than T6 yet T6 still has a bigger fan base as of lately).

What you guys gonna do to fix it? I dunno. There's no money package to stimulate the community here I'm afraid. I hate to see one of my favorite game's community die like this, but man I just can't stand about 40% of the surviving community's attitude! It's so retarted, and I'd rather shoot my self than deal with them for years to come.

The funny thing is, if SC5 comes out and a whole new wave of people come in (majority will be from online play) they will be scarred off again lol. The ego minded people I don't mind so much from online, but the one's that are confused about why LT's are crucial will be gone. Some higher skilled players gonna have to grit they teeth and give them that pat on the back and encourage them to come to offline play, but I don't see that happening lol.

Edit: Also, I've noticed that alot of people who play SSBM are usually intrested in playing Soul Calibur 4! When I was at TYS playing Melee with their group and the SC TV's started getting hooked up I heard about 2~3 people say "That's what I want to learn if I where to choose another game to get into". Some even started watching the soul cal peeps across the room. I even had a guy from here acouple a months ago comment on my brawl playing, showing he played SSBB (he got ran off though lol). This is a clear sign that some of the mechanics they use to keep their fan base would work here!! Tutorial videos, none hard bashing of the new guys, and other things are a few.

The community is cyclical anyway. It'll always ebb and flow. I run into new players constantly, I point them to this site so that they can learn new stuff. If you look at the long term picture, bringing in players now, two years ago, or a month from now all helps build the game's potential player base, and that will help new players pick up any future installments as well. There's no down side to bring new players up to speed even if the competitive scene happens to be slow right now.

Weirdly, the main message in the forums seems to be: "Game's dead. Put that controller down. Stop making videos, or putting out info on how to play the game for beginners. This info's only useful when a new game's released."

Well, that's great for you folks who apparently exist only to post such messages now, but the world don't revolve around 'ya. It is in fact still possible to expand the game's skill base and even lay the framework for a new group of players to develop who will then join in with SC5 as well.

Gonna pick up some pacifiers, milk bottles, diapers, tissues, bedtime stories, a belt, and a book on how to be a patient parent.
Yes, gonna have to nurture some noobs in. And like a parent, they're gonna need attention. Here goes. *sigh*

1.)"I'm too good" Some of these people think they're too good to play others because the play in tournaments and have been invited to house parties (Xephukai) or they don't want to be bothered with people of less skill because I don't know why.

*2.)"Hate Mail MAKERS" These people will purposely SPAM lag tactics or the Doom Combo for the purpose of recieving hate mail and think they are sooo cool and funny. The only reason somebody recieves hate mail is if they play unfairly theres no denying this NONE!

3.)"Restrictions in tournaments" Just because the character has some kind of advantage (Hilde Doom COmbo) they are banned, but its offline and theres no such thing as lag tactics if you're dumb enough to ukemi after her combo and get caught in it again thats your business.

4.)"Lag Tactics" Speaks for itself!

5.)"Newbie Silencers" This is when pro's god mode (3 perfects) a new player and send mail like "OMG, you SUXXORS" well this is VERY irritating and causes people to dislike the SC community in general I've come across this plenty of times. Ex: I was in some guys room and he remembered my name from THIS FORUM and he was like "8WR guys are such jerks and kicks me then sunt me mail explaining how people from 8WR are always bashing him because he is inferior in skill or whatever" and I was like damn!

6.)"The big dogs" The people who are the best of the best and refuse to play anybody who isn't on there friends list this causes you to NOT meet people who are potentially cool and can become one of the BIG DOGS!

My 10cts!

*Except those who send you hate mail for your higher sense of defense even though they could've Soul Crushed you...

how can you call someone dumb when you made a post like this?
