Soulcalibur VI DLC Discussion Thread

Well as absurd as their designs are, it has usually been a part of their appeal. The way I see it, it’s about 1/3 of that. Just like the rest of the cast.
I just like Voldo. I don't care if he is a bit of a weird'n and his costumes are fairly cool imo. Fanservice never bothered me honestly.

For the DLC I would like to see some guest artist stuff. Old stuff is great, but guest artists can really add to a game.

SJWs annoy me personally, no need to trash something others like. It's unneeded.
I find them absurd doesn't mean I don't like them. As I said, I like variety. Which is where games tend to lack when it comes to women compared to men. Which is where my one complaint is.

Games tend to embrace one side or the other only drifting a so far to the other side.

Which as a person who tends to prefer the middle can get annoying because in both cases they often fail to hit the styles I prefer.

Like a dress, one side tends to emphasize sex appeal over something more focused on being pretty and beautiful. While with the other they are bland and boring if you're luck enough to get a dress at all.

Here's what I find interesting/entertaining/informative about Voldo. I still remember when, in the summer of '97, after having just discovered Soul Edge, I was playing Voldo one day and the guy I was playing against, after a round ended, said to me conversationally, "You know, in the uncensored Japanese version, he has a spiked codpiece." And I think I said something like "Ok, that explains a lot about the thrusting." For all the time since, I was certain that base model Voldo would never get his spiked codpiece in the western releases. But sure enough, SCVI Voldo gets at least a little spike. Which means it only took us a little over twenty years to be a not squeamish/repressed enough market that they could give him a feature that we all saw implicit in his moveset all along, and catch up to Japan in that respect. Japan, the country that blurs all genitalia in its porn. Point being, it is so idiosyncratic and quasi-random, what offends certain sensibilities and what does not. I mean, I guess you could argue the reservation was more about sexualized violence, but then how do you square that with Ivy. I think it had to be at least as much about people not being comfortable with the phallic element.

Well I don't think a single person here (on either side of the debate) has suggested they are uncomfortable with sexual content. "Uncomfortable" suggests anxiety or discomforture. The difference of opinion is simply about whether or not the use of sexuality in this franchise is always very effective, particularly as regards the advertisements that surround Ivy whenever a new entry comes out--this being the image that got the debate rolling. Some people find these ads genuinely "sexy" and perfectly within the bounds of expectations for the game and others find them over-the-top and cringe-worthy (not so much for being offensive so much as pandering and "juvenile"). But I don't think anybody here is a puritan hiding their eyes behind their hands every time Taki comes on the screen. Certainly no one is advocating "censorship"--though some on both "sides" have opined as to to what the actual balance might be that the average SC fan wants, in terms of more pragmatic vs. more revealing character designs.

My bad I must have misinterpreted some of the post a few pages back, however...

    synonyms:discomfit, make uneasy, make uncomfortable, embarrass, abash, disconcert, nonplus, discompose, take aback, unsettle, unnerve, put someone off their stroke, upset, ruffle, fluster, perturb, disturb;

informalrattle, discombobulate, faze, set someone back on their heels
"his purpose was to discomfort the Prime Minister"

Furthermore with the exception of Ivy I don't really think this is even remotely an issue when you look at games like DOA or Senran Kagura, franchises that produce games that are blatantly designed to be over the top sexualization. I guess it's really just a matter of perspective and where your level of comfort is. The way I see it is if I can watch Game of Thrones with my family then SC isn't even an issue in its current state. I do however hope that the upcoming CaS parts aren't all sexy outfits. I would legitimately be pissed if that was the case. As far as a possible new female fighter goes, so long as her lore is well written and her playstyle is handled with care that's all I really care about because I have the option to edit what I don't like through CaS.

Cringe is also a noun; you're never heard the idiom "cringe-worthy" before? It's usually used in the context of being vicariously embarrassed for someone else or just blown away at how clumsily something is handled. And yeah, the outfits aren't really a huge issue in themselves, but the Namco marketing team just goes overboard on the Ivy fan service in the lead up to every game; it's like a pretty much ritualistic need to take out full page ads zoomed in on various parts of her anatomy. It's a bit much.

Yes, I've definitely heard and used the term cringe-worthy, my point is embarrassment is a form of discomfort and therefore I'm not wrong in saying that some people are uncomfortable. I don't really think they've gone that overboard with Ivy this time around though. All the characters have had their fair share of spotlight on the marketing side of things from what I've seen in trailers and Twitter feeds. I follow Okubo, Bamco and Soul Calibur 6 and anything they've shown is basically just character art that can be found in museum followed by a text blurb about the fighter, or some in game footage/screenshots.

I was trying to bring the topic back on... topic, but I was going to throw this out earlier but didn't, but there was a Voldo version of those ads, too:

kubgItr.jpg

It didn't get translated, which is why you may not be aware of it (while both Ivy's boobs and butt were translated to English ads), but it was a thing.

So they're at least somewhat equal in their shamelessness in Japan, if nothing else, I suppose is the point that I'm making. It still doesn't really make all that much sense that they went this way with SoulCalibur V, though, considering it was far more conservative, for the most part, when compared to the ostentatious offerings of SoulCalibur IV.

Pretty sure it's been long since established that that's not a real SC5 ad. Why would they use Voldo's SC4 model for an SC5 advertisement?

This promotional poster wasn't made by Bamco/Project Soul. If I'm not mistaken some fans didn't like the criticism that Project Soul received because Ivy's poster, so they did a version with Voldo.

Was it? I'm pretty sure I saw it on official sources. If it's fake, fair enough, whatever, but I could see it being real. It's a convincing fake, but good point about it being his model from SoulCalibur IV. I guess I never thought of it that hard, just eyerolled in the same kind of way but had the "at least it's both ways" talk in my head.

Ehhh, that's a pretty bold way to dismiss all possible criticism.

I explicitly made the point that if you think a design is trash I wouldn't give a shit, your claim that what I said is a bold way to dismiss all possible criticism is a complete falsehood.

Objectification means exactly what the morphemes of the word imply: it means reducing someone (or a class of someones, generally women) to objects meant for consumption and use

Video game characters are not real, they are pixels in the image of a human. Also "reducing" someone is a subjective term which is kind of my point that this is all about controlling sexuality especially considering we are visual beings and like to be objectified.

Ehh, something making you want to roll your eyes because it is so ridiculous is clearly not even remotely the same emotional/psychological state as being ill-at-ease with it, no matter how many similar words you can find in a dictionary entry. The perspective you read into those comments was just not the one anyone was expressing at any point--that's the bottom line.

I kind of get the feeling that you don't understand what is meant when someone says they feel objectified through a medium. It's not about the digital characters, clearly. But the fact that you're not even considering the possibility of life experiences that would lead a person to feel less cavalier and cheerful about the prospect of being objectified and can only consider the possibility of complaints in this area being about someone's effort to control others suggests to me that this is a dead end conversation for us. We obviously have different notions of what operative concepts here mean.

Lol yeah and I'm pretty sure I already said that was my bad, so again I apologize for not paying enough attention to the post that quite frankly don't even really belong in this thread, but I'm not going to argue vocabulary with you man. I'll check back when this thread is actually on topic.

Can we move on?
I tried:

With EVO seemingly to be about balancing and discussing the future, I feel like our best case scenario would be releasing the first pack of CaS parts, to give us an idea of what to expect from them in the future for the second pack, and perhaps more packs in season two, and a Cassandra trailer, to basically confirm the datamine, for Cassandra and Amy at least, being legitimate. No release date given for Cassandra, of course, since 2B didn’t get one, but they could at least give some idea of what to expect, moving forward, with such a trailer.

Well, forgive my confusion, but this seemed to be walking that back and suggesting "But when you think about it, they are really the same thing". But you're broader point is more salient; pedantic debate will get us nowhere, especially if it engenders sour feelings. At the end of the day, I don't think our perspectives are that far off from one-another's. Have a good one.

Yes, we've all tried at various points, but the problem is that with people filtering in at various times of the day either to provide responses or give their first take on the matter, sometimes contentious issues get re-ignited, despite everyone's best intentions. Hopefully though we can return discussion to DLC for good now. I for one won't respond further on the topic here, but anyone can always feel free to PM me on the subject matter if they feel a compelling need to provide a retort to anything I for one said. Everyone deserves a chance to say their peace, but I really do think we've strained this topic well beyond the general thrust of this thread.

Like I said man, my apologies. Cheers!
