EVO Update: Top 8

  • Moderator
With the rest of the mods enjoying the nice, cool Vegas casino weather, I felt it was appropriate to update everyone with how yesterday's matches went if for whatever reason you're having trouble (like I initially was) finding the results/brackets, or maybe you're just new to the scene and not quite sure where to go for information.

With a full day off today (Saturday) before they finish out top 8 (Sunday), you gotta keep yourself occupied somehow, right? If you haven't been paying attention to the biggest and hypest tournament in the world, you'll be in for some surprises

Top 8

Winners:
Xephukai (USA) - Asta (also, Patroklos)
Something-Unique (USA) - Pyrrha
Shen Chan (SG) - Cervantes
CRNA|Ruka (JAP) - Patroklos

Losers:
Kura (KOR) - Patroklos
Woahhzz (USA) - Alpha Patroklos
Shining Decapon (JAP) - Tira
Kamaage (JAP) - Mitsurugi

TOP 8 STARTS AT 10 AM PST. DON'T MISS IT!!!!!

HEADLINES:
-France out!
In a surprising turn of events, both Keev and Kayane lost some tough (extremely hype) matches. Keev now has himself an official EVO nemesis having both losses come from the same player. [NOTE: The EVO bracket is incorrect for the Keev/Kura match; Keev did NOT win that match.]

-International players sans France having a strong performance!
If you were watching the stream and listening to the commentary, you probably noticed that even players like Bibulus were taken aback by the performance of foreign players not normally known for their SC dominance, such as the Singaporeans.

-MAJOR comebacks!
Although this is certainly true for many specific matches (there were SO many close matches to even begin to list), there were some players that have straight-up faced the gauntlet in terms of their bracket. Kamaage (who you'll notice is in the loser's side of top 8) was knocked into the loser's side second round... and hasn't looked back since, stringing along an impressive number of wins to get in to the final 8.

-Some interesting character selections...
We knew we were going to see a lot of Nightmare, Natsu, Mitsu and Violas (to name a few), but... regular Patroklos? Three of the top 8 are regular P players, and Xeph used him in certain match-ups. Looks like that shin kick is making waves. Not to mention, there's even a Japanese Tira that sneaked in there... although his dominance in some matches would certainly mock my use of the word "sneaked."

-Word of the day: Execution
Not just in the sense of killing someone (metaphorically speaking, of course), but also technical execution. So many rounds and matches were won because of clutch, high-difficulty moments... and some were lost because of wasted opportunities. A lesson to newer players: Your ability to execute when needed is crucial on a stage like this.

-Asia VS the US of A!
Of the final 8 spots, the US holds 3 (2 in winner's) while Asian players hold the other 5 (Japan with 3, Korea with 1, and Singapore with 1). With Europe being such an SC hotspot, how surprised is everyone that this game seems to have quite a following in Asia?!?!

-So many killers...
If EVO has taught us anything so far, it's that there are a lot of skilled players in Calibur V, and any one of them can take any given event on any given day. For instance, despite France not making top 8, that doesn't mean that they weren't prepared or didn't play strongly: Keev and Kayane's matches were some of the hypest of the day. Expect more players to surface and this game to have a long shelf-life.

========================

That's all I have for right now. I was not able to catch every match, so if there's something you feel is worth noting as a headline, feel free to comment and I'll add it to the main post. Otherwise, fire away with any of your comments/opinions on how the hypest event of the year has turned out thus far! Oh, and don't forget to throw out some predictions!

Ohh Yes and everyone at EVO abused of C2B infinite...same in the MLG tournaments, there is shit lots of Hildes using C2B, totally remind me of EVO 2009.

Breaking the pace of whining, cheering, and other fun nonsense for a moment...

THE HELL IS A DECOPON?

Announcers implied it was an orange...My inner weeaboo tells me "orange" in Japanese is "orenji." Plus, the whole hard C thing that never occurs with romaji. I'm confuzzled :/

Yup and Tokido totally won the EVO with that infinite...no wait, he didn't.

Again, just because a viola didn't win evo doesn't make the infinite OK. Hilde didn't win evo 2k9, was her bullshit ok then? You are pretty much saying that since Tokido or any viola didn't win evo, the game is balanced the way it is. You are making a pretty bold statement from just one tourney. The fact is that the top players are there because they are top players, not by the characters they play. They could probably pick whatever character(such as Tira) and still win, but just because there is diversity in the top 8 in terms of characters, it doesn't mean that the game is balanced. There is a lot of bullshit in this game right now, some characters have dumb shit while others are so weak, but I understand that doesn't mean the weak characters can't win because the player can always make them good if they work at it. I am just ranting right now but the fact is that it needs to be addressed and if the patch is confirmed then this is a moot point.

Wow dealing with fucking retard kids is a headache. You can count on a couple things about them: they have no logic for a somewhat intelligent debate and they dick ride all day.

This game is somewhat balanced.

Anyone that doesnt think there is a big discrepancy between top tier and low tier is insane.

The discrepancy isn't so large that no character can't compete however. This is easily one of the most balanced FGs out right now. (And possibly in recent memory.)

That said. There are tweaks that can and should be made. And I personally hope that next time Project Soul makes a patch we don't jump down Project Soul's throat when we see something we disagree with. There's probably a good reason for every change. The latest patch is a hell of a lot more balanced than any previous iterations of the game.

Also. If you want to see what happens when they simply listen to what the "community" wants just look at Viola.

Well yeah of course. In MK9 every character compete, and this game is 324354634 times more balanced than that.

But obviously a Pat is a lot better than Aeon, not so much that it is an impossible matchup, but still pretty dang bad.

A dekopon is a citrus hybrid fruit from other citrus fruits you have never heard of. Orange in Japanese is daidai. The color orange is orenji.

Yo this EVO was mad fun. Why are there people posting on here that could of competed in Vegas. Get to EVO!! XD Decopan was mad solid, alot of us where caught off guard by tira, though we had enough time to practice, it was a base that many of us didnt cover. So we were caught with our pants down. And on top of that, the man is solid, so of course we were mad heated on the loss, heck no one is happy about losing. Thats what makes it great, we dont say the game is wack and stop playing, alot of us want to continue grinding out this game and hope to beast in revenge in the future. There is still alot more to learn and areas in improve. On the whole Viola thing, I'll leave it to project soul though she is very beatable, but overall there was a great span of characters, like dude i saw 5 hildes. On that Note shout outs to pool C28, was fun being your bracket running dude, and also mad respect to the Final Boss, and the Not Beatable Twice Unstoppable Mid Boss... and Jon is da Best! That 6 round beasting was amazing. Should go down in the annuls of SC5 history. Too bad no one recorded it. XD

Will 8WR actually make a EVO shoutouts thread???

The most interesting thing that happened at EVO, I believe was the complete shift in the meta-game. If you didn't catch it, I will explain it. Speed, aggression, damage.

A lot of the matches that I saw come down to the most aggressive players having the balls to press buttons in situations no one would dare. The Japanese are very aggressive always have been. If you watch them play tekken same mindset. A mind set that would have gotten them raped in the previous series of soul calibur.

However SCV rewards characters with speed, has more 50/50 chance situations, and it rewards aggression. Shining Decopon, literally stood in front of his opponents faces and attacked at disadvantage. Mind fuck. His reactions were on point to. But I thought the most notable thing was just standing in front of his opponents, and applying a pressure I have never seen before. Yeah you can punish him for attacking at disadvantage, but his combos can make up the damage.

I can't say he was the strongest player, but I can say no one was prepared for that kind of style.

This kind of style is actually what won MK9 as well. I noticed the same thing in SCV, Decopon was on the offensive most of the time. I think it was partly because he knew Tira was underrated and no one would know how to fight her, but even the one's that do probably still struggled. He also made some godlike reads to even out his odds, which was great.

I still think it really depends on the character you play, but i believe we will be seeing more aggressive play in the near future.

Patch 1.04 is going to fix the broken stuff. Also I hope Hilde gets overnerfed.
theres another patch coming? holy shit DLC yun seong there is still hope somehow..... if only he was there my life would be complete..... and tag team battle would be nice too.....

No, there is no other patch, at least not yet.

Can we please get back to talk about EVO, there are 456463416 threads about tiers and patches, and useless stuff that won't make any of these crybabies win a tourney.

Back on EVO, Sora said he had good footage of some fights during the EVO that we didn't watch, can't wait to see those casual fights, they are usually even more fun than tourney matches.
