Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate

After playing Street Fighter for a while (and having my first offline session today!), I have to say- at the basic level, at least, it reminds me a lot of Dead or Alive, in that you make hard bets all throughout the match, and things can turn ugly while being completely out of your hands.

I have to wonder why people play one over the other if it feels this similar. Is it because SF came first...?
easy. SF is a 2D fighter. that's what americans drift towards. now if this were Japan things would be different and games would be equally getting attention.

Yes and No...Tekken and Virtua Fighter get a lot of attention in Japan for 3D fighters, but really not too much else. Soul Calibur has a dedicated following but it's really not too big from my understanding. Probably DoA as well. But seriously, go to almost any arcade in Japan and you'll see the newest Tekken and Virtua Fighter and a whole slew of 2D fighters, but will rarely see any other 3D fighting games.

Really not feeling Yaiba Ninja Gaiden Z, but I have a shitty Ryu costume from it, so thats nice.

The English guy from Ninja Gaiden 3 needs to be in this game.

2D mostly. A lot of americans are incredibly biased and lazy about learning things. 3D fighters have lots of different strings, so it intimidates people.

Now as to why a person might prefer tekken over doa, it comes down to the illusion of control. In Tekken, people feel like they are winning due to physical reflexes and not guessing. In some cases thats true, but really if you just run in and start infighting with a frame advantage based character or someone with above average evasion its the exact same rock paper scissors hard-betting gameplay. It's the same for SCV, as well as VF.

Fighting games like to deceive a person into believing they are doing something more complex than RPS, but really they are just trying to hide the fact. The more well it manages to hide its nature, the more highly regarded it becomes in the eyes of the majority.

I actually have a lot of respect for DOA simply because its so blindingly honest about it.

Fuck, accidentally bought that private paradise thing thinking it was a costume back. Amazing how 12 animations of girls doing fuck all on a beach is worth the same as Metal Gear Solid V Ground Zeros.

What Rikuto said. You can sense it a lot in the rhetoric used by commentators; notice how they'll emphasize things like 'footsies', 'making reads', 'execution' and 'yomi'. And, honestly, in a game like SF, when a low level player does something like a wakeup ultra, even if it works, it's downplayed (while, if a high level player does, it's described as a gamble or something less 'scrubby'). I think fighting games are, pretty much, different types of RPS (I'm not saying there are only three options, but more of a 'this beats that' type of thing rather than something in traditional sports where you can account and adjust for many of the variables) systems at different situations.

It's also funny that the best moves are often the ones that can be used to force your opponent to guess (or guess multiple times) while eliminating guesswork if you should guess wrong.

so the big Marie Rose came out today/yesterday (writing this a 3am). everyone played her. many might stick with her and many have found out she's not that special person to jump on the "Main Bus" or the "Sub Van". Instead she rest on the bench waiting for the next player to adopt her. unfortunately, i am one of those people that found myself uninterested in her. i played with her, broke her data down (the basics anyway. the core), and even played her in some fun online matches in DestructionBomb's tournament cup. but at the end of the day she's not for me. :(

how does anyone else feel about her. and pls no comments or complaints like, "I faced Marie Rose, like, 100 times already." we get it. it's a new character so it's gonna happen. wait for the hype to die down a couple days from now. actually 3 days from now cause xbox doesn't have it yet.

Haven't played her, still up in the air whether I want her or not.

She's good (to be honest I believe Rose is going to be pretty solid), wall game is good, damage is good, semi-decent range tools (if you're spacing and footsies aren't good, you WILL struggle A LOT at range. I have a much easier time playing footsies as genfu than Marie and his range tools are very limited to a few strikes).

Her mix ups are interesting, if you can't figure out how to apply her Rondo sabaki transitions into her stun game, you will be subpar with her. She has very good buttons in general (P, 9P, 6P, K, 2P etc) and her lows are amazing. 6P4, 6K4 and 6P+K4 are amazing tools in critical stun.

What seems to make her a little difficult is trying to apply her Rondo sabaki (parries both high and mid punches) correctly. She has a lot of safety, so finishing certain strings and short strings clearly means you can Rondo afterward because players are often trying to strike you after blocking something safe. That's how her sabaki and safety compensate one another. That, and trying to apply her 3P+K roll variations during her okizeme and offensive pressure need work.

I've only been playing her for about a day and a half. I'm getting the hang of her. After about another day or two, it's probably just going to come down to learning her match ups. I know she is going to be struggling versus Ayane because these tools she has are not going to be amazing against her. Played my teammate's Ayane earlier in casuals and it is so uphill (granted I'm still learning Rose but it doesn't stray from the fact that she is having a really difficult time getting in). Up close is scary for Rose because your neutral pokes only consist of P, K, 6P and 2P.

6P is too vunerable to Ayane's 64H advance mid punch hold and 6K is i17 lol. Ayane doesn't have to respect Rondo at all because of 6K, K and 8K.

I think Hitomi is going to give her problems as well. Jannlee may be quite the annoyance as well because his keep out is strong. A few characters I think she'll be okay with in the match up are genfu, Hayate, Ein, Momiji, Mila and Kasumi at the moment.

I bought her, played her for a bit, I kinda like her, but I'm not really certain exactly how to effectively work some of her stuff. She feels a lot like a character that can stun and launch into combo pretty easily, but her poking game is pretty sub-par and her offense and maintaining it is pretty lousy. The turn-around - as it were - is that she has a lot of tools for baiting in Rondo sabakis and her BT moves are pretty vital to her play. The problem is, no one who isn't good at the game, isn't going to fall for it, so working that mind-game sabaki is going to be pretty tricky. I don't think she has too many ways to get in, and she's actually kinda slow beyond her basic neutral stuff (P, 6P, and K). Everything else is hilariously slow, 6K at 17 frames and 4K at 16 frames. Interestingly, she has the safest 6P of the entire cast at -6. And she actually has a pretty nice PK.

I can't say I like her PPP (duckable last hit, leads to nothing), her 1PP(duckable, holdable, SS-able after the first hit), or her 3H+K (hilariously slow, but high crushes). Her 236P is pretty nice, and her 64P is fairly decent on reach. Her 4P is really good. Still thinking about 214P, and 3P. Her 9KK isn't too bad either, but it has no alternative follow-ups and the second hit is easily holdable (although the first hit stuns, so it's passable). Her 7K is her best launcher I've found and leads to nice damage combos that are pretty simple to work with. I kinda like her 8K, and her 8PPP combo is guaranteed after a CB on corners (shockingly). I'm not quite certain how to play footsies with her (its definitely different from Jacky) and far too many players rather just swing wildly than effectively space and think.

About 50 games today, 21 wins. Lots of bad players still hanging around and many of them still running gimmicks and doing stupid things which I fall for all the time. Today, I lost to two Momiji players, one of which used only air throws to attack with, the other spammed nothing but 1PP and 1PK. I also lost to a Bayman player, who initially played aggressively (though, poorly), when I won the first round he retreated as far as he could and then started using only tank rolls to get in and throw wouldn't do anything else. I lost, of course.

Other players included a Kokoro player who used nothing but neutral strings like PP2KK and staggered strings like P2K and always went for PK2P. I lost of course. Other players include Marie Rose players who did the 3P+K roll spam into OH. I lost this, largely due to lag. A Hayabusa player who would not stop using standard punch strings to start all his offense. A Jann Lee player who always opened with 6PP and then immediately into 6H+K into dragon stance. And several players - who for some reason would not stop holding low, no matter how many times I hit them with mids or throws.

I had to end up playing completely and utterly simple just to get through some fights. It seems several players got really frustrated with me and decided to stop playing against me afterwards. So I sat in training for some rather long periods. Others (who beat me), didn't want to fight me again, either. I didn't really get to test much or try out some ideas for Marie Rose. But it feels like she has quite a few nice combos and isn't quite as defensive as I originally thought. There's a certain degree of defense in her design that's used to break offensive counters and stay on the offensive. I'm kinda liking all the effective launchers she has too.

Sometimes im askin myself if you ever read your post, before you post it...just sayin...
yeah. from my point of view i'm just seeing nothing but complaining. and it doesn't seem like you are adapting or realize exactly what your doing wrong. and it also seems like you have this, "it's not me, it's them" type of attitude. or you blame the game in one way or another. try taking another approach and adjust your own gameplay style. just a suggestion.
