[Dec 3, 2011] North East Championships XII (Philadelphia, PA)

To be fair, every city has its good and bad areas, but I think the thing that seperates a rough city in the US is how freely guns are available due to the culture over there. Here at least, getting hold of a handgun is generally very very difficult, compared to the US at least - even in the police force only special units carry them.
Don't get me wrong - there's certain areas of London I'd avoid like the plague and I'm staying in a rough area of Nottingham with university, but I'd personally be a lot more concious about my own safety in the US, though that could be the way it is portrayed over here, I don't know yet - but there's certainly a stigma there... =/

Well given that are demonized in Europe to such a huge degree, I wouldn't be surprised if they thought that all city people have guns and constantly punch babies.

Philly is kind of a hole though, but you can say that about most urban areas around the world.

Europe has crime in its slums and poor areas, we have crime in ours. Most of the people living in the US (especially in this thread) have never had a weapon brandished at them or near them, let alone held or fired a gun. So yea, perceptions are what our respective medias make them.

Crime, poverty and assholes are the same everywhere and happen everywhere, the larger the population, the larger percentage of those you have.

seems simple.

Somebody might want to update that, otherwise we might get new players attending thinking they can use Hilde or Algol.

I served in the Marine Corps, expert marksman. I've been held up at gun point, did not give up my money or my car keys, and I've been chased by a husband, in a jealous rage, with a 9mm. But I did not get shot and I got my pants on.

More people, here and in Europe, have had guns in there face and hands then you may realize. But Synraii is correct, there are good and bad places everywhere. I just spend most of my time trying to find the worst places, they seem to be less boring then the safe places. Kinda why I like Philly.

Do you know how many tournaments we've had where this hasn't been an issue? It's safe to say that nobody is going to make this mistake at the last tournament for SC4, that's if they want to even enter the tournament with the amount of killers that will be there.

I'm not so sure about punching babies, but the gun thing in the states is emphasised very strongly over here. The fact that I could go to Wal mart in America and leave with both my weekly food shopping and a shotgun doesn't really help the case though, lol.

Okay, the way things are looking, I'll be able to make it for the weekend, probably against my mom's wishes. But what momma doesn't know, won't hurt her... right?

Anyway, I've never traveled this far out of state before, and never by plane. Ever. Needless to say, I'm worried/anxious/scared shitless.

I MIGHT be able to afford a room at the Sheraton where the tourney is... but I'd really like to be able to save that money for other things and just buy a plane ticket. Would anyone who has a room at the Sheraton be willing to let me (and possibly one or two other people coming with me, if they can make it)? I'd be willing to pay a percentage of the room.

Also, how are airports with carrying a PS3? Is it in any way likely I could lose my luggage containing my PS3? If so, I'm probably not going to bring it, and I'd like to NOT bring it if I can help it. Same thing for controllers, but I think they're small enough I won't have to worry.

Ok, if you need housing, you probably need to arrange some form of compensation or payment. And note that in large bold text; that you are willing to pay. Gamers be poor generally.

To be fair, the Sheraton NEC rate is cheap if you arrange for 1 person to rent it, then split it up the cost- 95 a night between 4 people is 25 a head x3 days at most = more than reasonable.

Airport Advice: Get there early (at least 2 hours), and always carry your ps3 in your carry-on bag. Always. ALWAYS. Same with sticks/controllers/games/laptops. On rare occasion they might make you unscrew your stick, but be good-natured and explain what you are doing, and dress like a normal person at the airport, and you will probably not be be bothered by security. Philly ain't that scary, at least the parts you are gonna see. The hotel is literally a block from the airport too, so get your shit in order and see if there is an airport shuttle (there should be).

HERE I COME NEC

[edit] I'm not even joking someone get him to change the rules before I end up buying a ticket. If this changes when I get there I am going to be mad.

Gogo Cedric, go steal NEC with Hilde! Come practice at Panda's gathering later today to knock of the rust first though lol.

I probably should have pointed that out, but I'll gladly pay to share a room. I'm just not confident I'll be able to afford a room on my own... but if by some chance I can, I'm gonna take that idea and sell it out to people. That's a great idea.

How big does this carry on bag have to be? Luckily, I don't play stick, so I won't have to worry about that.

Carry-on bag typically can't be any bigger than a normal sized backpack. When I went to EVO in 09, I packed my ps3, laptop and stick into a tight fit in my carry-on bag.
