This isn't true in versus I was the tank and was on fire and wasnt taking any damage from the fire. I'm not sure in single player but im pretty sure it will still take damage if you shoot it because we killed a tank in about 15 seconds we lit it on fire and unloaded with auto shottys

All you can do is practice. If you find that you can't do it at all it may be the joystick because I can not get it with the joystick but I get it about 50% of the time (in practice) with the D-Pad
