You can bind L1 and L2 to A and B to help you with throw breaks while your thumb rests on the G button.
I've seen other people bind a trigger to Guard, while their thumb hovers over the face attack buttons so they're ready to counter at a moment's notice.

If you play with your thumbs, you should bind triggers to simultaneous commands that are not so easy with your thumbs. So R1 could be A+B+K, R2 could be B+G. Normally I'd bind A+K, but people or saying that are no commands that require A+K unlike the previous games.
