I think Higurashi is kind of hit-and-miss, but it's an enjoyable series overall. And yes, Elfen Lied is awful.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. And, er, from what you described of the first episode, it seems like you actually started on Higurashi Kai, the second season. The first season starts with two girls getting their heads bashed in, you see.

I think Mirai Nikki is pretty bad overall. The story is such a ridiculous mess. The last few episodes were just... wat. Ninth is awesome, though. She's my favourite character.
