Aside from character archetypes id say your best bet is to just go shopping in the character select screen in training mode and see who fits you the best. Don't over think it. Just load them up, move through all their moves and try them for yourself. My preference even changes from game to game...

In place of that man the best thing i can say is find a stick and get good on that. Its what i wound up having to do way back when and it hasn't treated me badly. It sucks you'll have to change your preference if you don't find anything to your liking but it is the simplest way to go about it.
