I don't know what to do against certain characters. (I use Mitsu)

For example, VS Nightmare, if he catches me I'm dead with 5 hits and I can't block or tech roll or roll to the side when he strikes. I try side stepping but always get caught with his swings.

And against other characters like Tira her strikes are too fast, if I block I get hit low, then if I block low I get hit high.

It almost feels as if whoever gets the first hit/combo in, wins.

What am I doing wrong here?

It's killing the fun for me to play this game.
 
Nightmare may appear like he's unstoppable but he's actually very unsafe and can be interrupted during quite a few of his moves. My advice is to find a Nightmare player or just practice against the final Nightmare in hard-level Arcade and get destroyed by him over and over until you start to pick apart his weaknesses. If he knocks you down his only real tech trap is 1A. If he starts spamming Grim Stride B, just step to his right (I think) and teach him to do some different moves.

Tira is pretty unsafe. You can beat most Tiras by just blocking and punishing. She doesn't do much damage either, and if you get a big life lead on her she's pretty much SoL.
 
You just don't know the matchup. I've had similar problems the last couple of weeks and the best advice I can give is learn to space better. Put yourself in a position where your moves are better and go in once you land a hit. Nightmare is really unsafe so punishing is a must but some of his vertical can be hard to punish and those are the ones you want to sidestep. Don't be afraid of his stances since they usually provide you with a chance to attack.

Against Tira you want to pay attention to which mood she is in because she is much more dangerous in gloomy. In my experience she's easier to sidestep in jolly. Try to avoid the break attacks because she can really get nasty once she has plus frames.
 
As a previous Mitsu player who now plays Nightmare and Tira little bit of advice, You outrange tira in most pokes. That's your goal. See an opening and poke until you knock her down into a tech trap. As for Nightmare watch for his tale tale moves like 88B or something hes trying to do to close, he can be very telegraphed. If Nightmare is trying to zone you use your mixups or 8WR your way close blocking along the way if you have to and even burn some meter on GI's seeing as you wont have to guess high / low using them its worth it and then you have an opening to attack. Mitsu's meter shouldn't be used on CE's in my opinion as he already hits like a truck. Just make sure you can be offensively defensive as stated and you'll be ok.

One last thing about Tira, her lows are good but her launchers are really good. Don't get launched, if you have to eat a low to avoid a launch you're doing ok.
