Hey everyone!

Hey everybody! I'm new and I'm a SC5 addict! Well I guess you could say just a SC addict
I have ALOT of questions, never took a fighting game to the next level till now. Was fairly
Confident In my ability till I logged online. Hope to see you guys around, and hopefully this grasshopper
Can be turned into a......pro?

Also is there a iPhone app for this site?
And what's the word on Talim? I just got SCv and I haven't seen anything on her!

Welcome!

Talim is gone. I know, I know. Have a tissue. Anyway, there's lots to be learned from this place. Generally, I just say find a main, learn some techniques and the metagame, and generally just practice. If you want to learn how to get better, this section is a good place to start. [Link] It also has a bunch of smaller sections for specific characters. It'll help you with your main, and your matchups.

You have questions, you say? Ask away!

Thanks for the welcome!

As for my main, well I'm undecided. I'm sure ill put Viola and
Cervantes to good use. I also wanna find the most underpowered
Fellow and use him.

Welcome, hope you feel like home and stuff
and, as for what you said about your main characters, Viola and Cervantes are both top tiers, or well, "very strong characters", but they are quite simple, or at least cervantes is, for a new player
If you want "underpowered" characters you should take a look on raphael, leixia or zwei, but in the hands of a skilled player they can be a real problem

Lexia is a B teir isn't she? I've always been a fan of that style.
Zwei seems kinda worthless and Raphael annoys me. Gunna have to check
Out the lady. I've got a fairly good knowledge from readin around.
Gunna take a bit to understand the frame rates and some terminology,
Like punishing moves? Any charecters I shoul avoid due to everyone using them?

No, Leixia was B tier but now she sucks, but she is quite annoying in the right hands
and you should take a look on the punishment game of your characters and of course you should study the punishable moves of the rest of the cast, but it takes time
and about the "Any charecters I shoul avoid due to everyone using them?" question, well the most used characters are mitsurugi, nightmare, siegfried, xiba, natsu, astaroth and regular patroklos as far as I know

BUT it depends on what you like, you may like mitsurugi (if you do I hate you btw) and you shouldn't be worried if he is very used or not, in my case, of those characters I enjoy using natsu because she is quite complex at high level, but she is one of the favourite characters. My main is pyrrha omega by the way, she is a punishment based character and that's most likely why I love her that much

You should just use characters that fit your playstyle. Get into training mode and try them all out. You'll know what sticks; it's like finding the shoe that fits your foot perfectly. To go further into this analogy, if you like it but still need to get comfortable, keep wearing that shoe and it'll break in.

Just don't concern yourself over using commonly-played characters. One of the characters, overused or otherwise, is going to call out to you. You just have to try on the shoes. :P

Welcome new one, hope you enjoy your time here, don't worry much people will be nice and respond your questions just wait you will see it,
Hope to see you around rookie.

What is "the punishment game?" From what I've taken so far, it's the moment after the moment you say
"Oh crap I shouldn't have done that?"

What is "the punishment game?" From what I've taken so far, it's the moment after the moment you say

The short version is this (yeah right, "short"):

Every move that you do takes a certain amount of "frames" to execute. One frame is a 60th of a second, AKA there are 60 frames in a second. In addition to this, moves also take frames to recover before you can do anything else. These are called positive (length time of move start-up) and negative (how long until your character recovers from performing the move) frames. Attacks are "safer" if they have low positive and negative frames.

Now, the two general ways you would punish would be if you blocked an opponent's attack, or if the opponent whiffs (misses completely and makes no contact.) This means they would be open for attack, because the moves they just executed would have negative frames that they have to wait out before they can do anything else like guard. You retaliate by following up with a move that has LESS positive frames than their last moves' negative frames. Otherwise, you'd be too slow and you lose your punishment opportunity.

Different moves have different frame timings. The idea is to know which moves you have that would be fast enough to punish the other guy's attack.

An example:
Your opponent hits you with a move that is -10 frames on block. This means that if you block, you can respond by attacking with a move that takes less than 10 frames to execute and it will hit him.

Inversely, you can also punish people for trying really slow moves, AKA moves with a lot of positive frames. If you interrupt, say, a move that is 30 frames long with a 10 frame move, you will have been faster than him, therefore you hit him before he even touches you. This is how Counter Hits happen, and you'll get extra little rewards in gameplay from that in various ways.

Hope I explained it semi-well. And I hope you weren't confused by the game-theory... Frames are an important concept to learn in fighters.
