Looking for Some Advice

[08] Mercenary
Hey Everyone,

I am new to this forum and to Soul Calibur in general. I was looking for a competitive game that was fun to play with a high skill cap and SC5 intrigued me. I have been reading around and everyone says that you should choose one character and stick with him/her which I fully understand. Before jumping into online multiplayer, I plan on practicing a ton in quick battle and training modes. However, I would like to use this time perfecting (trying to atleast) the character that I will stick with. The characters I am considering are Cervantes, Ivy, Mitsurugi, Yoshimitsu, and Xiba or Maxi. Please list the pros or cons of each character along with your recommendation. Also, if none of these characters are suitable for a beginner, please say so. Thanks for any help you may be able to provide!

Edit: Sorry, I forgot to add Devil Jin. That playstyle really interests me as well.

In my opinion mitsurugi is a great beginner character! He has easy to do combos that lead to decent damage. I would suggest using him until you are more adept at the game. Yoshimitsu and Ivy are a bit more to the advanced side. Cervantes is not to hard but he has strict inputs. And that takes time.
Mitsu-Pros-Easy,Decent speed, Medium range. Con-Not the greatest for high level gameplay.
Cerv-Pros-Fast, Great punishment,Powerfull-Cons-Hard inputs, unsafe if you dont play him correctly.
Ivy-Pros-Best rang in game, Powerfull combos, Amazing CE-Cons-Can be side stepped and punished if someone knows the matchup.
Yoshi-pros-Really fun to play, Fast, IMO best mixup game-Cons- If you guess right with his mixup he is punishable.
Maxi-Cant tell you much here. He has good mixup and high damage but I find I can just guard his chains and just punish easily.

These are just my opinions though :D If you need any help with the site feel free to contact me. Welcome to 8wr!

I would recommend playing all of them.

Being specialized right off the bat won't help as much as having a better understanding of the game. SCV doesn't require character expertise to be solid, simply knowing everyone's moves and the fundamentals of the game will carry you that far. By the time you need in depth character knowledge and great execution to push you to the next level then you'll probably have a good idea of who you are as a player and who you want to play with.

Rythm, What about Devil Jin? Thanks for the info, though! And, Kvasir, I think that I will try out each character in quick battle/training for awhile to see which one seems most natural. However, I would like to only play one character in multiplayer when I start. Thanks for the quick and helpful responses! Would love to see what others have to say. Great to be a part of 8wr.

Devil jin is really good but banned from tournaments so he is a nono for competitive playe :D

Haha oh, I didn't know that. He looked like fun too but I would like to eventually get competitive.

Cervantes: Complex with a large number of tools that give an advantage in numerous situations, but missing his just frames basically guarantees you get launch punished. Not beginner-friendly.

Ivy: Best I can tell you is that she kills step like none other with her horizontal whip attacks, but all her whip attacks are slow and fairly unsafe.

Mitsurugi: One of the simplest characters(very beginner friendly), but he's a major threat with his high damage mixups, ability to dish out more damage on downed foes, and decent reach. On the downside, he's probably the most well-studied character in the game so chances are when you play good players they'll already know everything you do about him and more. Oh, and due to his simplicity a lot of online scrubs will give you hatemail for using him at all. Best to ignore them :)

Yoshimitsu: Something like Cervantes, but with confusing stance shenanigans and stranger payoffs in my opinion. His lack of reach does hold him bac quite a bit, in spite of also using a katana his reach tends to be much less than Mitsurugi.

Xiba: Great reach, power, and borderline decent mixups, but he suffers against players that know his tricks due to being a bit unsafe(his strings are easy to deal with) and only really having one trick that causes difficulty for his foe.

Maxi: In spite of being favored by button mashers everywhere, he's a very difficult character to use properly whose strings are relatively easy to deal with by people familiar with him and you must rely on his stance mixups and pray for clean hits to remain competitive. He has seven different stances that he goes through as he attacks, though he doesn't have much of an execution barrier memorizing all of those and figuring out which to do when(rather than just automatically trying to combo everything you can) requires a lot of time and effort to really master.

Thank you Wandrian for the very in depth answer. Things came up last night and I didn't get a chance to go on. Cervantes and Mitsu are both sounding very intriguing, though I'll still give each one a shot to see how I feel about them.

Hey All,

Just an update. After playing each of the characters mentioned above for a decent amount of time, I believe I'll be going with Cervantes. He style feels the most natural and I have the most fun with him. Wish me luck! I'll be sure to stay on 8wr. Awesome site with awesome member.

I'm really late but I only know that all those characters of course require more knowledge to master. Mitsu being the easiest. Everyone else being a bit harder. I can only offer Yoshi tips since I use him the most. However, you picked Cervy so now Pocky Yoshi can sigh with relief for he doesn't have to teach Yoshi. Yayz! ^^;
