Looking to take on my first 3D fighter

Dopples

[08] Mercenary
I'm not quite a convert, since my main game is still Marvel 3, but the more I read and see of Soul Calibur V, the more I wanna learn it. Played a LOT of SC2 on the Gamecube back with my friends, but never really took it too seriously. Never got into Tekken or Virtua Fighter either, so this'll be my first foray into actually playing on a somewhat decent level. Maybe even going to participate at EVO, who knows! Anyways, figured I'd say hi, maybe get some tips on what to expect compared to UMvC3 or even SSF4.

I think the most important basic to keep in mind for SC vs 2-D games is that standing guard is going to be your default defensive option (as opposed to crouching guard). A lot of moves hit mid (everything from launchers to your standard BB), which are like overheads in a sense that they will hit you out of a crouching guard. So essentially you're gonna want to block low only when you see a low attack or a throw coming, or if you want to duck under a high for a punish, otherwise you're gonna keep getting hit in the face.

Also, don't play SC like you're locked into the 2-D side-scrolling. Especially with the new quick step, moving in the all 4 directions is very key. So practice sidesteps, even up close, and try to out-space your opponent at distance by dashing in and out of range.

That should be enough to give you a pretty good start. Other than that, pick a character to stick with and start learning their signature/clean-hit moves and their combos.

EDIT: Oh, and have fun :P
