New to 8WR with some questions about Soul Calibur glitches etc.

Hello I'm new here, wanted to get into fighters competitively, and have always liked SC since DC (didn't play Soul Blade). Anyway I hear a lot about how 3 and 4 have lots of glitches, and many people sometimes do not seem to take SC series as a competitive game because of it I guess. I just want to know what is the reason it is not taken as serious as other games like tekken, or even SF4 which (I think) is built to work with casual players.

~Mind you, I played SC3 mainly for the CaS and the custom rts story, rather than competitively.

Hey, welcome to 8WR!

I wasn't around for SC3 so I can't really say much about the game competitively other than mention the VC (Variable Cancel?) thing that seemed to cause some problems in the community.

As for SC4, there have been some character issues mainly dealing with Algol and Hilde (who are both banned in MOST regions around the world) instead of "glitches".

Here's a good example of how people reacted to Hilde and her "Doom Combo": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXRzsS4FHpI

As for Algol, his bubble/projectile moves seem to contribute to his ban, but the main reason is unclear to me.

I'm not the best at dealing with this discussion so perhaps somebody else can fill you in more accurately. Hope this post helps regardless.

I looked at the terminology, but didnt see what VC meant, and can you explain the wallsplat glitches??? rather just what exactly are they? able to attack a person constantly on the wall? and the step G's in 2, are they moving guards ????

what did the Variable Cancels do ??? and thanks for the quick replies and welcoming me to the community!

thanks for the links! as I said I mainly played it solo so never knew what people where talking about with the VCs and such. is there anything like that in SCIV? I know (or at least at my skill level) that certain characters, once they stun you, can do continuous attacks on you for a time if you don't avoid/block it. That wouldn't have anything to do with why people say its glitchy? or that the game is unbalanced??

Nah, there isn't anything like VC in SC4. As for the stuns that you mention, you can actually shake out of most of them as opposed to taking all that damage. Most of the balance complaints seemed to happen when Hilde was legal. With her out of the picture most players tend to agree that the game is fairly balanced.

Variable Cancel was in SC3. There whee diferent VC's as well. Throw VC's and certain moves could be canceld with VC. VC can be perforemed by holding guard and tapping down twice.

The way it worked was whenever you went into back turn and did a throw then you could cancel your throw animation while they staying inside said throw animation. If you hit them with say a launcher then it would launch tham as if they where on the ground standing no matter what position they seemed to be in during thriw animation. With abyss and one of his VC's you could do his UB amd hit them perfectly with it.

Another VC was Mitsurugis 22B[g22]. If you did this right he would cancel the attack. He can cancel the attack at any time during the duration of the move. So it culd be done and then stopped before it vould land orm if done really well, on the first frame of the attack hitting on block or hit. On block it allowed for block strings and mixups and on hit it led into combos.

how do you shake out of them ? just tapping a b or moving?? I have a high tendency to keep trying to ukemi if i get knocked down, im slowly going through the roster to learn all the moves to block properly, but I cant shake stuns.

Shaking stuns is done by moving the analog/dpad/or stick around rapidly. Easiest way to do it IMO is holding guard and doing a circular motion on the dpad.

Edit: I'm going to move this thread into the "New Player Arena" section, for the sake of organization.

thanks for the explanation on VCs, I honestly knew nothing about them when people spoke of it being glitchy

Edit: Also, I apologize for not putting this in its proper forum.

In general, the Soulcalibur games have been riddled with weird hitboxes and random whiffs since forever. Those bug many players who come from other games and are used to stuff working the way it's supposed to work, every time. If Project Soul hasn't been able to work that out 5 games in they may as well do what Tekken does with its crush moves.

welcome to 8wr!

G2 in sc2 allowed you to sidestep while being impervious to taking damage

VC in sc3 allowed you to do many things. here are a few examples:
-allowed certain moves to be cancelled in one frame back to neutral, eliminating attack recovery time completely
-allowed back throws to be released and reset as egg described
-allowed GI and JI effects to be neutralized be the aggressor. an example of this is that if, say, i attack and you do a just impact, i could VC immediately and be at neutral while you were still in the JI animation, essentially punishing you anticipating my move and countering it correctly
-allowed certain throw setups to become unbreakable or reset by the aggressor during the animation so as to lead into combos

sc3 also had a number of other glitches ranging from characters floating in the air to falling through the floor lol

sc4 has horrible hitbox issues and random whiffing problems...cassy wra anybody?

it mainly is looked down on, though, because of hilde and algol. as you can see in the video partisan linked, hilde combos are absolutely ridiculous. i've argued many times that her c2bb relaunch is in fact a glitch, but it may not be. there is really no way to tell at this point and it is trivial anyway. as you can see in the video, the only thing louder than the booing is the laughing. i mean no disrespect to hilde players, but you can clearly see them getting absolutely outplayed in every possible way, and still winning events and tournament matches against vastly superior players. she is the most terribly unbalanced character in the history of soul calibur, and the fact that she was allowed in tournaments for an entire year made sc4 into a joke for most people.

algol in sc4 is a boss character, which often automatically leads to a tournament ban, but is not always the case. he is banned for multiple reasons; he has a number of infinite combos and massive damage combos that can not be broken, shaken out of, or escaped in any way. he has a number of extremely unbalanced matchups vs many characters on the roster. his bubbles often extend in such a way as to obstruct the camera and make the gameplay not visible.

here are a couple out of many examples:

sc4 is not taken seriously in the USA because for the first year of the game, when it had the most exposure, hilde and algol were allowed in tournament play. this lead to many regional communities disbanding because people simply didn't have the drive to train themselves against characters with such massive and unfair advantages. by the time both characters were finally banned, i hate to say it but it was simply too late, and the damage by them had already been done.

Soulcalibur 2 and Soulcalibur 3 had their fair share of random whiffing as well. You can't dump it all on Soulcaibur 4.

II Also has some stuff going on where you can glitch out of being GIed(and throw opponent?) and some moves had cancels that weren't supposed to be there(only one I can think of off the top of my head is Mitsu's b2 could be cancelled into run I believe) You could also cancel into BT moves when you went BT in the middle of a move iirc.

The american NTSC (or w/e it was called) version of SC III has glitches galore. I think I saw a video of Oofmatic once getting chracters to stand side-ways in mid air. Obviously VC was crazy, I think Ivy could Back throw opponent infinitely with it. Lizardman could cancel his command throw(thereby making it harder to break), run you to the ring edge and RO you for free.

IV's glitches, other than certain inconsistent hitboxes, are rather few and often not that material. 2P for certain characters who have an attack that KNDs on standing and ATs on grounded will get both the KND and the AT on standing opponents(Lizardman and Nightmare both have this ). Also Astaroth 2P if he A+Gs airborne opponents in certain situations(typically close to the ground) it will not throw the opponent, unless opponent holds up in which case they will glitchily teleport into his hands and the throw will commence late. For a select few tech traps, being 1P or 2P may change the outcome of teching in a certain direction(wanna say Nightmare has a tech trap where opponent can tech out to NM's right if they are 2P, but not if NM is 2P). Vader (2P only) has a screw up on his 4A+BA+B where if you press the 2nd A+B at the right frame at the beginning of the AT animation from 4A+B, the opponent will get launched as if the 2nd A+B was input, but vader will be free to move as if he had not done the 2nd A+B and will similarly not consume any force. He also has the opposite effect if you input the 2nd A+B on the wrong late frame in the 4A+B AT whereby he will consume force and go through the animation of tossing opponent up in the air, but they won't go anywhere(and be able to hit him).

thanks a lot guys very informative. I kept hearing people say how SC was scrub friendly, not a combo/juggle like tekken, but i just attested that to those who complained because they didn't know how to play. I looked on youtube for some more glitches that were in 3. Sucks that they weren't prompt on banning certain charcaters. Do you all look down on custom created characters in Standard matches (I RARELY play special vs., maybe once or twice since SCIV has been out). I heard that a custom can do certain things differently, like a custom talim is taller than the original, or certain characters can whiff.

meant to add in, thats why i heard SC wasn't taken with the same regard as something like Tekken

Custom characters have hitbox problems because of their varied builds, so they aren't allowed in competition. Colour/costume edits of the normal cast are fine however, although most of the time players will just go with the standard 1P or 2P.

As for the "SC being scrub friendly" thing, it's safe to say that the statement is one of ignorance. I'm sure many of the players here can attest that SC is a VERY deep game, and just because it doesn't focus on combos/juggles does not mean that it is "noob friendly" at all.

Oh and the Tekken community has always been larger than SC (as far as I know) so that's probably why they aren't considered on the same "tier". Perhaps someone else can elaborate on this as again I'm not too sure.
