You won't go wrong with a Mad Catz TE*-style stick, or the Hori equivalent - as long as they use arcade-standard parts (Sanwa or Seimitsu, usually) the shape, weight, and art is all personal preference.
You could, if you're dipping your toe in the water, get something like the Mad Catz WWE Brawl stick cheap and upgrade the stick and buttons to Sanwa later on. Will cost a similar amount, if not more, in the long run, but you don't have to splash all your cash in one go. I did this, for my first stick, with a Mad Catz 'Street Fighter IV' SE** stick, and still use it - I like the shape and size better than a TE.
I'd recommend, however, the QuanBa sticks (such as the Q4RAF - http://www.gremlinsolutions.co.uk/products/qanba-q4raf-arcade-fighting-stick.htm). Sanwa parts, a carrying handle, nice big storage compartment for the cable, and out-of-the-box compatible with PC, PS3, and Xbox.
Maybe a bit lighter than is ideal (if you like a heavy stick like me), but I use self-adhesive strips of modelling weights to easily add a bit of weight...
