I have recently bought and used Hori Fighting Commander for SoulCalibur V, so here are my experiences.
These are fighting controllers designed by Hori with 6 face buttons, 2 bumpers, and 2 triggers. They have a version for both the Playstation and Xbox. They are compatible with their 7th and 8th generation systems and also have PC compatibility. They also have a switch for allowing the d-pad to function as either the d-pad or the left stick. Although the two versions seem nearly identical, they both have their own exclusive features.
The Playstation version has a Turbo button, which is used to assign turbo features to a button or more. This also has the option to make D-pad function as the Right Stick.
On the top of the controller is located another switch that can remap the bumpers and triggers. It can be set to the familiar layout (L1-L2, R1-R2) or map the Left bumper and trigger as L3 and R3 respectively and the right bumper and trigger as L1 and L2 respectively.
Exclusive to the Xbox version is the assign feature. It is recommended that one learns to use it right away as, by default, LSB and RSB are mapped to the left bumber and trigger and LB and LT are mapped to the right bumper and trigger. By holding down the assign button for 3 seconds until an orange light comes on, the first button pressed will be selected for reassignment and take the function of the second button pressed.
The Playstation version has ease of use and turbo features going for it, while the Xbox version offers more freedom in how buttons can be remapped.
How I used it in SoulCalibur V
I took it to training mode to get the feel for the controller and it was awkward at first. Unlike the Dualshock and Xbox controllers which used a face button layout similar to what the Super Nintendo Entertainment System controller has...
The Hori Fighting Commander uses a six-face button layout similar to later Sega Genesis controllers.
While I still haven't fully accustomed to using these controllers, I still find the situation manageable.
While not as comfortable to hold as the standard controllers, it can still be a godsend to dedicated fighting game fans who can find incredible use out of these.
Which one would you prefer between the Playstation and Xbox versions?
