Why do I feel like these were not intended to be as funny as they are..?

I thought they were pretty good. What's so funny about them?

Looks like Volsir is the preferred design, judging by the poll so far.
 
Ja-kal and Volsir are the ones I kinda like. The rest.......well they don't quite fit the description. I can see one of my characters saying for instance: Hey master manipulator, why the afro? I thought Africans were supposed to look savage and unrefined?

He's not European, I'd sooner call him a sorcerer or alchemist than a knight, and what is wrong with a black man wearing an afro? I picked that scythe because it looks supernatural and fits his colour scheme.

Well the idea for Neffa was that he started from very humble beginnings and used unscrupulous methods to attain a more luxurious lifestyle that let him see the world. Hence the "master manipulator" part. He's selfish and hedonistic. His birthplace was supposed to be more of a mystery because he's discarded his troubled past, instead preferring to focus squarely on the here and now. The idea was that he was from northern Africa, maybe modern day Morocco. I don't think someone from Africa necessarily has to look savage and unrefined. Maybe he did once live in village made out of mud, but he doesn't anymore, and he's decided that he never will again.

Their stories are only vague sketches in my head, as you can see. Like Jez? I don't know what her story is. I know that she's a shady person, that she revels in material pleasures (weapons, ornaments, artifacts), and that she will form relationships only to vanish as soon as she's gained whatever it is she wants. She likes art, she likes to fight, and she likes to act. She's a liar.

Rekha is military-minded, maybe a disgraced leader. She tends to believe she's the most intelligent person in the room, and 9 out of 10 times she's right. She is committed intensely to her cause (whatever it is, I'm not sure) despite being officially denounced and abandoned by most of her peers. She's vain and critical, but highly competent. She's addicted to her work.

Does that make them more believable? :-|)
 
I should've voted for Jez. I'm really proud of her. I wanted to design a handful of characters that looked like they could fit in with the rest of the SoulCalibur cast, and I think I succeeded with most of them. I hope I did, anyway.

None of them are based directly on existing characters, but I was inspired by different things.

My inspiration for Jez was an illustration by Yoshitaka Amano:

I wanted her outfit to look like a mish-mash of cultural appropriations, like she'd stolen a bit of everything in her travels all over the world. She's a thief. I also wanted to convey that she tends to be dangerous to your health, so I put those twin gilded skulls around her neck like a warning sign. They symbolize her split personality and fit her description as "Two-Faced Traveller." Her character resembles the "femme fatale" archetype.
