[Seattle, WA] Ragin' in the Rain

A few things since it seems like Evo has stirred up the veritable hornets nest ( in a good way ):
1) To avoid these communication issues in the future, we should establish a roster with names, e-mail, and phone so we can contact people as well as arrange times/carpool.

2) I'd be willing to work on a website, but it would have to be in ASP.NET which might make hosting more expensive. Sorry, but I'd need it to tie into my studies to get a job.

3) John has an enormous downstairs area that we have not utilized at all. What we need going forward in my mind are:
a) More chairs or a sofa for downstairs
b) More LCD's/Mini-TVs. I have a tiny 15" TV, but its very portable and takes composite hookups ( the other hookups besides the Green/Blue/Red ). If we get LCD's, we need to get a few more sets of the VGA cables
c) A few more xboxes to run the games on. Or playstations. We haven't been utilizing John's playstation at all, so if we cound Cam's xbox he brings every week, we already have 3 game capable machines. We just need an additional screen to play on.
d) controllers. I think we can solve this by everyone chipping in and buying a few wired controllers. It's easier to setup and much cheaper than the wireless. It also resolves that fucking problem with the xbox not being able to forget the controller its paired with.

4) And last but not least, to me, the trophy is obvious:
The Sasquatch.

4) And last but not least, to me, the trophy is obvious:
The Sasquatch.

Isn't the trophy supposed to be something only the winner gets to go home with?

On another sanity break here. My initial instincts were correct: I'm *so* maining Bang in BB, and not just because he's the "new Chipp". I can only hope someday I'll be part of something as ridiculously awesome as what starts at 3:25 in this video:

We shouldn't bite off more than we can chew here. Focus on just setting up and running the first tournament, and then set up the peripheral bells and whistles like the website and mascots (should be Sasquatch, obviously).

September seems pretty distant, and PAX is also in September (hopefully if PAX is running SC4 some guys will come back to practice beforehand). I'd prefer to start in August, if that's possible.

Well, a couple of updates. I figured if we were going to double up with BlazBlue, we should have a separate name by which to promote that part of the tournament, something that fits thematically with "Stage of History", so I registered WheelofFate.net (currently pointing at StageofHistory.com.) Unfortunately, someone registered the .com back in '05 and hasn't been doing much with it, and it doesn't expire until next May... Minor grumble, if the tournies go well we might be able to grab it then.

I also got the contact e-mails and phone numbers of the SoulCalibur and BlazBlue brand managers (edit: I got those too, but I meant Public Relations managers.) I'll shoot out a couple e-mails when I'm done with my papers, see if we can get the official thumbs-up to use their artwork in our tournament fliers / webpages, and maybe a sponsorship. Worst case scenario, I'm sure the teams would be cool with signing the very first first-place certificate for a Seattle winner if we sent the awards down to Cali with a return envelope. I'm not even going to speculate best case scenario (I've seen some pretty cool donations from companies before.)

Also, Aksys is currently cross-promoting BlazBlue with the Mana Potion energy drink. I'll get in touch with them, see if they want to be our official beverage. First I want to try it out to make sure it's tasty (I don't even know where to buy it in Seattle!) They seem like a cool gamer-friendly company. Hope the drink's good.

I'm leaving August 5th, but I can see this being ready for the 8th or 15th if we get the leg-work done this week. As soon as I'm done with classes, I'll have more free time to spend on it. If you guys want to work out the kinks on Friday, that's cool. If we can agree to Cam's 3-week schedule, though, I think we should hit up First Pick on Thursday night to discuss the details - they have a busy schedule, so we'll want to reserve a free Saturday early, at least two weeks in advance for promotion, and Friday nights they do Friday Night Magic, so it won't be possible to get them in a quiet moment then. Thursday work for you guys?

Ok, I've got to finish up this paper. There's a whole other issue of building the web-page, fliers, co-ordinating the forums, etc. We can deal with that once we've nailed down the specifics on dates/times. If anyone is actually well-known at SRK or dustloop, shout it out. I've lurked dustloop, but I avoid SRK like the plague.

Alright, I'll check back in later today.

You ninja'd me again, Cam. You, sir, have a talent. :)

I agree with Cam. Let's get the infrastructure setup to accommodate growth first, then work on the other things such as the site and such. When we meet this week, we'll figure what we want to do with the gaming area and then ask for people to take some assignments.

I guess I can see why you'd avoid SRK, it's kind of a cesspool

There's this seattleversus.com website related to the seattle fighting game scene, maybe you could get in touch with the guy running it to advertise SC4 gatherings there

sorry guys, I already have plans for this friday. Honestly I might have to cancel my plans friday because of work =/ I can help with the tourney stuff starting next week though when I should be done with a majority of my crunching.

We can get this off the ground pretty quickly IMO, especially if we want to do this at John's house.

How many people (who aren't already regulars at our friday gatherings) can everyone get to come to this? I know one person who would be interested, but it's doubtful that he'd come every month.

the top priority should really be getting enough people. BlazBlue is still relatively new so with proper advertisement I think we can pull in a good sized crowd. Once we set a definitive date/place, we can start advertising like mad on dustloop/srk/college campuses. I don't think we need to go fancy with prizes or sponsorships for a monthly event, money should do.

I'm not sure about the sponsors providing monthly contributions, but I'll send out e-mails to Namco and Aksys tomorrow and see what they're up for. (I've written them already, but I want to double-check everything after I get some sleep.) No harm getting in touch with them, at least, let them know what we're up to. Plus, there are more benefits to a healthy relationship with the publisher than just tournament sponsorships, like early news, the chance to give feedback, testing opportunities, etc - and I'm fully expecting Cam to become expert at Tager. It's always a good thing. :) (edit: I'm not speculating, I've seen this where I used to work.)

I started a Seattle thread (Land of the Sasquatch!) on AstralHeat.com (8way's sister site) telling people to hit us up here if they're interested. Doesn't look like it's populated yet, but who knows who might wander in.

With all this talk of BlazBlue, I don't want to sound like I'm suggesting we replace SC with BB. GO would get mad at me, after all. Bryan has a good point about bringing more screens - with GO's PS3 and 360, if Cam brings his 360 we could run 2 SC's and BB. I'd volunteer a screen, but my tv is a monster widescreen CRT that weighs a ton. I could bring in a 24 inch LCD monitor, if anyone has a DVI-HDMI adapter. Anyone have anything better?

I checked out SeattleVersus, they seem like a nifty crew. I'm not sure if they'll turn out for SC alone, but they ran a house-tourney for BB on three screens a couple weeks back, and they look like a pretty tight group. If we ran BB, I imagine they'd send out at least 10 people. We should get in touch with them after we get our heads together on Friday. It looks like they're mostly in the SF4 scene, which I'm not super-keen on, but they also play GG, KoF, etc. We definitely have some crossover in interests (except for GO. :P) Supporting each other's events would be cool.

Also, the Pac NW and BC forums on dustloop have been really active lately. I have a feeling we'd get a *lot* bigger BB turnout right now than for SC... which gives us the chance to make some converts. All good.

Yeah, I'm being very vocal about my thoughts because I haven't slept recently. Like you said, it's not actually all that hard, but I've done this stuff before helping other people out and I'd like to take a little initiative for a change (even if I blew it off in May, and guttinboy was the one who brought it up again.) I am stuck on the idea of visiting or calling First Pick tomorrow to see what their August schedule is like, and not putting it off - especially if we want to set this up for the 8th. Cam, if you're willing to drive into Seattle I can make it whenever - I've already talked with them, but if I'm gone it's probably going to be on you.

Oh, and I figure out the RSVP/Newlist functionality on Office Live. Automating RSVPs should make things tidier, and I can set it up to go to anyone's e-mail account (or just create a dedicated RSVP account, if someone volunteers to check it while I'm gone.)

I'm reading a lot of shit here. And it's all fine by me. But I've been hearing this talk for about 3 months now and I'm going to say now what I said then...I just want to play the game with other people. As long as I can do that I don't care what y'all wanna do, I'm down for whatever. AS LONG AS WE'RE PLAYING SC4 with people, me and Sweets are down for anything. See y'all Friday. Holla!

Oh and I contacted the new guys who posted on here yesterday so hopefully they'll get back to us and we'll have actual people coming not those pesky spectual people.

Hey guys,

just wanting to let you know that I am planning on showing up this Friday. It is my first time going to one of these things so I am excited to meet all you! Btw, my name is Collin, and I am really glad to see all the iniative to expand or community. Just to let you guys know, I'm not sure if this can help or not, but I am a graphic designer in training, and have designed signatures and banner for a fair amount of sites. I am spreading the word to some of my friends and trying to encourage those who own the game to come. But not sure if they really want to get into it competitivly, but I can tell you, I am definetly looking forward to friday.

Hey Bruh,

Thats great! As I said earlier, you can stop by anytime after 5 and we'll be going through the night. Tell your friend...well you'll see. They don't have to be as if they're training for a tournament or anything but it's actually just some time to hang out if they want with people who may share a common interest. Either way glad that you're coming through and I see that you're maining characters that 2 of us are just starting to learn in Yoshi and Cass, and Lies has a pretty nasty Nightmare so you'll have all kinds of things to learn. If you need anything holla at us and we'll see what we can do to help.

Once again, see y'all Friday. Holla!

And just because this is kind of relevant, I read this several months ago and maybe it might help...
http://www.8wayrun.com/f21/building-a-local-sc-community-t286/

I called First Pick Games today. There's a new owner, and he seemed both friendly and really into the idea of having a monthly tournament in the shop. His name's Narayan, pronounced like Ryan with a "na" at the front.

They have one completely free Saturday in August, and that's the 15th. I suggest we go for it.

We discussed venue fees, and we came up with the figure of $3 a head (not per event, for the day.) edit: Don't know what happened, but I got confused with the old $2 figure and posted some *really* bad math. Ok, at 3 dollars for BB and SCIV, 3 dollars entry fee, and a $1 buy-in for the random-create tournament, then the buy-in would be $10 flat for the day. Alternatively, we could up the buy-in to 6 dollars for BB, 6 dollars for SCIV with an automatic registration into the bonus tournament, and 3 dollar house-fee that would make 15.

The normal store hours on Saturday are noon to eight, but he said he's willing to come in a little early or keep the shop open a little extra. I like the notion of setting up at 11:30, so that when the doors open for the day everything's ready to go... but I'm starting to think that doing this afternoon-to-close might be better. It gives people a chance to grab lunch before-hand, and it leaves a perfect dinner-gap between events. We'll talk about this tomorrow.

Anyway, I suggest we take this opportunity. I'm kinda bummed I won't be here on the 15th, but if it goes OK I'll be around for the next one. Next on the agenda are those e-mails - I'll post an update when they're sent.

Just got a call from Game Crazy. My copy of KoF XII is waiting for me in Wallingford. Hope I can get to it today, so that we can try it out tonight. :D

Can't make it today. I'm not a fan of any sort of buy-in tourney for this game. Sean and Cam already know this.

As for Hilde... ehhh I'm not feeling it but I'll check it out more. Move to maybe Vader/Yoda? Can someone post a top/high tier list for this game? Personal or official.

My priorities are Tekken -> SF4 -> SC4 -> BB.

Well, you gotta give a little to yet a little. My friend has been part of the brawl community for a while, and he seems to think that the only way to keep people really interested and coming back is to offer some incentive for doing well. I'm all for tournaments with entry fees. People always like to feel like they are playing for a goal. Otherwise, what's the point?

Also- is there anything I should be bringing for today?

Otherwise, what's the point?

I come from the philosophy of playing for respect and pride. I'm not going to mash mixups to random someone out.

Scenario: New person buys-in to get deuced? GG he isn't coming back.

On a side note, I wish the arcade scene was still alive...
