I'm starting to think of some stories to start adding to them.
I've always had one for Marla though.

Marla:
Age: 21
Weight: (our last reporter strangely went missing after asking her this question)

Marla sets off on an adventure to prevent her archenemy Anaaka from obtaining soul edge or Soul Calibur. Is this to keep the world a peaceful and safe from her tyrannical reign? Of course not! Marla only wishes to prevent her from obtaining these things, because the last thing she wants to be doing, is serving under Anaaka.

Long ago (in the realm of Soul Calibur 3) their seed of hatred and bitterness towards each other was sewn. Teaming up with Abelia and Anaaka, the 3 set off to stop a man by the name of Strife Astlar Grandall from his reign as possible king over their homeland. Strife had been using the power of Soul Edge to persuade his entire empire at the snap of a finger.

After a long and gruesome battle between the two factions, the girls had put Strife in his place, leaving him to rot in the remains of his once lavish castle. Marla and Abelia wish not to use or abuse the powers of Soul Edge, while they plan to destroy it, Anaaka had taken Soul Edge for herself, not knowing the powers would take over her so quickly, she quickly went on a mindless rampage, then later, became hungry for power, and thirsty for bloodshed. Marla, Anaaka's only true match must keep her at bay, for the sake of her own sanity.

Voted for Marla. Your CAS are bland. Stickers. Abuse them. Objects. Use them. Colors. Monotone. Skin color. Same thing. Do better. Try again.

I dunno about being that harsh. They use stickers and patterns, and I see a little bit of object use (Hana's hair) but other than that, the *designs* are indeed overall bland. 'Cute' skinny girls wearing girly things--can't really say anything else about them.

None of them tell a story, and none of them convey any bit of personality. Most of their faces even look like the exact same one. I think Hana looks the best here, and looks like she has the most technical ability put into her. But a poll? Really?

I wasn't harsh. I just did not want to write an essay about where exactly he went "wrong". Didn't mean to come off that way. Even Hana's hair could be improved. You can see a lot of space between the weave and her hair. Not to mention that the size could be adjusted. The idea sounds good, but it may have been better to change the hairstyle entirely instead of using objects (Viola's hair would work perfectly).

Lol, to be honest, these are significantly better than the majority of general anime girls you see pooting around.
While some of them are a little 'empty' and in need of some stickers/patterns (imo, Marla's 1p), most of them are very good ideas executed fairly well.
Rogue's P2 and Marla's evening wear look awesome, although they're not particularly to my taste due to clipping issues with the pareo-merveilleuse combo and the issue of skin shown when using Elysium's wrap as a skirt.
Overall though I like your customs and your use of makeup is also very good, do share more!

What the others said, plus when I look at the creations, these girls don't look like they belong. It almost looks like they were kidnapped for no apparent reason, and tossed into the arena. They look very incomplete, almost like you're a bit afraid to put more stuff on them, or something.

thats because i dont like overcomplicated creations. or to come across that way. i start putting different pieces of equipment on, and i notice my characters begin to look bulky...and i hate that on my characters.
and if i start putting stickers on, i can never find the right spot to put them, and it ends up looking like a giant mess.

actually, tbh, i thought you were extremely kinda rude. you pretty much opened up with "its boring" and ended with "do better" its kind of a an insult sandwich.
and like Jess said, you cant put any hair under that hood, only the bangs show up, but not her curls.

Speaking of viola's hood, has anyone notice that, if you try to put a skirt on..it SOMEHOW interferes with it?
My Rogue character, player 1 outfit had a proper skirt on, but the hood decided to eat it...not like anyone cares.
cause apparently everything is too girly in a masculine community.

If anyone could suggest a technique i could use with certain stickers, it would be greatly appreciated.
and dont tell me to just "use them", cause in my head, you're saying "slap me" : )

We've given feedback, and evidently because we didn't say, 'It's awesome,' it's worthy of being ignored.

As for the last line, yeah, just use them. Experiment. You can get some interesting body suit effects with the stickers by placing them with the axis method, and increasing it to the largest size.

Again, I did not have time to post a long response. Maybe it's because I don't treat any of my creations as final (anyone who looks at my CAS thread would know that), so saying something like "do better" isn't much of an insult. A real insult would be saying that you should never make another CAS again, which would be uncalled for.

As for tips. You can use stickers to shape up patterns or make your own. Pictures would make things a little easier to understand so here is an example,
SOULCALIBUR_18-1.png

It's a throwaway design. It's not perfect by any means, but that's not the point. All I used was a pattern and 3 stickers for her top. Same mini-dress that you used.

I can understand not wanting overly cluttered designs. That being said the other side of the coin is the design being so sparse that it gives too little information to people. I can get an impression by looking at Rogue that she's supposed to be a mysterious sort of character but all of that information comes from her hood. Take the hood away and it's gone. She needs some supporting items so that her design smacks people in the face and says clearly that this is who she is. As for what those items may be it depends on the character you want her to be- practical, elegant, energetic, etc. Hana's design is strong because she has the hat, the knives and the strappy shoes and they all point to her being a thief. It's a clearer message.

I know the hood got "nerfed" (if CAS items can even be nerfed) and that really is crap, I've got some characters who use it and as a result I can't edit them without the game removing the skirt. It's shit but there are workarounds which again hinge on the character you want her to be. If you get that concept nailed down it'll be easier to get a stronger design.

There are some stickers which can help give an outfit some depth. The grey pocket sticker, the red ribbon and the shiny phoenix are a few you can use to alter the texture and look of an item. Used in combination with each other they can make boring items seem more vibrant or just different. As a general rule (for me) the Ribbon goes on skirts, the Pocket on trousers/shirts and the rest are just trial and error. Blow them up to full size and then slowly shrink them down to see if you can get them to work. There's no real "trick" to it, it's just good old fashioned messing around.

I'll point you to this thread here for some general tips on what to do- stickers included. I'm fairly sure everything you need is in the first post.

Cheers!

Edit: This is the link the Gatsu's thread Draco mentioned, if you're interested. It's not as concise and is a more wordy discussion about concepts rather than technical tricks. It's still definitely worth a look though.

One more thing to consider is that there are some pesky psychological things that help hold you back from achieving more with designs just as much as learning to play the core game better. Excusing your mistakes is a bad idea, it just holds you back. Embrace the nastiest criticism and take it to heart, chances are it'll help your work get better if you really try to accept your flaws and mistakes. Yeah, it's unpleasant but it's pretty important.

@Jess: I agree. ^_^

In particular, I love how you designed Rouge's P1 outfit. The color scheme and patterns flow very well together, and the added hair effect make the CAS especially unique. Overall her design stood out to me as being exceptionally cool.

Furthermore I thoroughly enjoy your sense of coloring and pattern, as seen in all of your characters.

Don't be disheartened by the previous feedback given. Everyone has there own style and preferences, so not everyone will find a particular design appealing. So just take what you wish from their advice, in order to further realize your own pursuits and desires.

Woah, hold the phone. There's nothing wrong with girly feminine characters, I've seen plenty of awesome ones on this board, what we're saying is that they all look like the same character with different hair and outfits on, when you are intending them to be different people. And this is a very common occurrence, especially with people who make a whole bunch of anime-looking girls.

If anyone could suggest a technique i could use with certain stickers, it would be greatly appreciated.

There's much information to be had here:

I don't think you did a bad job with stickers or patterns, honestly, but more the character designs themselves. I think Gatsu made a thread talking about that, but I don't have a link off-hand.

I still like them *-*
These designs look beautiful ^^
I especially like the second costume of Marla ^.^ ( Want Such a dress too *-*)
Hana is also a favourite of me and the colors you used on Ericka suit her.
Rogue looks cool too . Even without much stickers and so on. Their designs for the dresses look awesome*.*

I really like your alternate for Rogue! The blue/grey combo and the subtle stickers are quite cute. She would look even better with a little more color variety. Marla's dress is pretty too. However, the heavy patterns on both the dress and the stockings clutter the design. Try bright white stockings or a larger pattern on the dress. Hana has potential. She'd look great with a cropped jacket with super-sized pocket stickers. As Fliptop suggested, the pocket sticker should be your go-to for clothing layers.

I do have a few observations I'd liked to share though. You're currently stuck in reality mode. In other words, you're only assembling outfits that you (or a girl version of you) would wear day to day. It would be enlightening for you to occasionally go nuts and release that inner child that used pencils, crayons, and markers to scribble shit all over his homework, his house's walls, and even his unwary friends. As I'm fond of saying, you have to test your limits to know them. Only once you learn how to get fancy, you'll know when to hold back.

I'll also let you in on a dirty secret. Here on the forums, looking good is never enough. People go on and on about art, fashion, and aesthetics, but what it really boils down to is that the more artistic gimmicks/techniques your creations have the better, kinda like nuclear weapons for countries. While a standard armor may look perfectly sexy, you'll see people make a buckle out of the "feathers of strength" item just to make it "theirs" and to say "Try to make THIS, hah!" See the wizard and demon hunter I recently posted in my mini-gallery for prime examples of this madness. Okay, I exaggerated a little, but do dig around the forums and see what tricks you can find.

Sure, there are some people that you encounter in life (and on the internet, mostly on the internet) that are deliberatly mean and scathing for no other reason than to tear another person down and leave woe in thier wake. I really do not belive anyone on this forum is particularly malicious. Harsh somtimes, but not malicious. I have not, for example, liked all the comments on my CAS thread, but those comments, as with all advice given in life, you must take the grain, and leave the chaff. That being said I enjoy your palettes, thought the designs are a little plain (that is not to say you do not have a solid foundation to work from, you do). there are many resources on this site (as well as CAS threads) to give you inspiration for sticker use, and acessory use (which even I am still learning). I encourage you to experement with different faces and see what works for the character (you clearly have a favorite, which is good, but complacancy leads to stale characters). My main point is to take peoples advice for what it is, and not how they say it. Without personal, face to face interaction,it is easy to misconstrue someones intentions. Don't be quite so dismissave if it is not in a tone that's pleasant to you. And certainly, certainly don't stop sharing because of it. I like your stuff and you have a huge margin for improvement.
