SC veteran, new to part 5 though.

Hey there, everyone.

I just created this account a few minutes ago, because I'm a huge SC fan and I bought SC5 just recently. However, I tend to constantly fail with ANY character. But as I got a little sick of just reading tons of tutorials and watching youtube video after youtube video, I was looking for some rather personal way of mastering the game, which is why I signed up here.

I've been playing all SC games so far (until SC4 just in a rather casual way though) and I dare to say that I've been quite a good Cervantes player in SC4. At least I've been playing the game since release, trained a lot and had a nice online winning ratio.
However, I came quite late for SC5, as I've been studying in Japan for one year and didn't have my PS3 with me. Also many characters did change a little (or more than just a little), others have been removed, others have been added.
Personally, I don't want to play Cervantes anymore, because he changed a lot in my opinion and I can't really identify with his playing style anymore. Instead, I started to focus on characters like Mitsurugi and Alpha Patroklos in the first place. Mitsurugi has always been a quite beginner friendly character and I like his moves, but Alpha Patroklos is, just like Setsuka, a character that seems to need a huge load of training and especially timing. I'm extremely untalented at just inputs and stuff that Alpha Patroklos is obviously based on.
Also I have to admit that I'm not into frame counting or similar stuff that gives me the impression of making me unable to enjoy the game any further. Sadly most kind of tutorials seem to be based on the very essence of this extremely professional attitude and don't really address SC5 beginners that much, I think.

Therefore I'm totally not sure, which character to play with or to begin with. I don't know about you guys, but if I'm not able to find a main character I want to master, there's hardly any immersion for me. All in all I'm generally having a hard time enjoying SC5 in the same way I enjoyed SC4, because I don't really know how or where to start and don't have anyone to play with.

However, I'm looking forward to communicating with the people here and maybe finding some friends to train with or whatever :)

Mitsurugi is definitely a character that smiles on beginners, and he's not that bad a character in this game. Even better when non-beginners (a level you will eventually reach) use him. And yes, I'm a Cervantes player, so I agree his playstyle has changed, but I still stick with him. Also, tell us what area you are struggling with besides finding a character to main.

Thanks for all the nice words, guys.

@thenewperson: The reason why I'm not really so enthusiastic about Alpha Patroklos is the just input thing. To master him one really needs some talent for well timed inputs and all that stuff. Sadly I don't seem to have that talent at all.

@Zaden: Well, my main problems indeed are my indecision considering my main character and the just input thing. Other than that I sometimes have difficulties with correctly guessing when to use which attack/combo to get the best results. Most of the time I'm all like "Uh, yeah, I like that combo a lot! Better use it regardless of the circumstances!"
I was like this in SC4 as well, but one day I met a really good Cervantes player online and he said "Dude, you may have potential, but you're just doing standard attacks and so on. I'll show you how to play Cervantes." So he was having some training sessions with me, wrote me combo lists, told me about the most common mistakes, shared his experiences and all that kind of stuff. So I really got into that slightly more professional level of SC.

The last 2 days I have been concentrating on Mitsurugi so far. He's really still quite easy to play, however I'm missing longer combos (like the ones I was able to pull of with Cervantes in SC4). His damage output seems to be pretty high though.
I also thought about playing Ivy, because I've always liked her, but I didn't really consider her as a character to play with in all the previous games and especially her many stances in SC4 were too intimidating, haha.
Natsu's style is fine, too, but I guess that's what every newcomer thinks, as her teleport moves are probably even cooler than Taki's.

Well that's a shame. But yeah, he is quite hard. I have up on him earlier in the game because his JF timings were quite different from Setsuka's and I really didn't want to relearn them again. But I returned because I loved the style so much.

Yeah, the style's very awesome, but nevertheless Alpha Patroklos might not be the best character for a SC5 beginner, I guess....
Of course I may give it a try though, as soon as I got used to the game a little more. For the moment learning how to JF time your attacks seems to be a secondary task. First I've to get into the very, very basics probably.

For combos to come out well, you need to do them both ways. First, hammer them out in training mode until they come out second nature, like muscle memory. Just do them over and over in training mode. THEN you have to start practicing against live opponents, because that can feel totally different. When facing a live opponent, you have a nervous factor which causes you to revert to the safer, easier, lower damage combos. First face easier opponents to apply those harder, higher damage combos and get used to that. Just time in the water is what I'd say.
