Completely clueless (sort of)

MGSPhantom

[08] Mercenary
Hello there! MGSPhantom here, and I am just another competitive gamer just like yourselves! Whether I am fighting warriors the world over in fighting games, our smarting fellow generals in strategy games or simply speed running some of my favorite titles, competitive gaming is without a doubt my number one hobby!

My latest addiction has been Soul Calibur in particular. While I have been playing the games for about a decade with friends casually, I have recently gotten the urge to dive into the competitive scene and take my play to the next level, and beyond. Actually, for a while i have been meaning to do this, but I had no idea where to start since I was not aware of what the best communities for Soul Calibur were. Thankfully though, being a competitive Super Smash Bros player I stumbled across Jaxel's Apex 2012 and 2013 streams, and instantly I knew where my hub for all things Soul Calibur was going to be.

The main issue is that I have ZERO experience with Soul Calibur as a competitive game, so my trek to the top (hopefully) will be from square one. Thankfully, I am confident that the help I need can be found right here on these wonderful forums, and I am also confident in my abilities to learn this game relatively quickly with all of your help!

Some general information, I live in McHenry, Illinois and I am 17 years old. Other games I play competivly are Super Smash Bros Brawl, Smash 64, Ultimate MvC3, Street Fighter 2 and 4, Command and Conquer General and Red Alert 2, and general speed running games (particularly RPG and platformers).

But anyways, I hope to have a blast learning the game and meeting new people on this forum!

Hey! Welcome to the forums! I like your spunk kid, I can tell you're gonna be a good one!
;P
Anyway, you need any help just ask around. There are Soul Arenas for each character that provide ample info and discussion on whoever you might be interested in. ( Even though mine is pretty dead) And plenty of games to be had, whether they are with our weekly colosseo meetups or some one on one sets. If you want to get some games in I'd be up for that too, my GT is my username and I'm looking for as many sparring buddies as I can!
I hope you enjoy your stay, friend.
Also if you're really new I recommend reading DrakeAldan's articles. He explains many of the game's fundamentals in very simplistic (and entertaining personally) ways. They really are a great help even if you already know what you're doing.

Thanks a ton! Who do you main in particular? And that is the only problem I have with these boards, a seeming lack of discussion. But I blame that more on Soul Calibur's unpopularity with the public than anything else. Besides, quality discussion>Tons of discussion. Right?

I do have one question right off the bat. Can any of you recommend a decent arcade stick for the Xbox 360 (though multiplatform is preferred) that costs around $75 or less... I normally see them cost around $100 and I just don't have that money right now (still job searching).

I main Tira and Aeon, as you can see down in my sig. And there is definitely discussion in threads like the ragequitters/hatemail thread lol. I don't know if it's because most of the real important stuff has already been covered in places like Soul Arenas, but good discussion> lots of discussion for sure.
I personally don't use a fight stick, I thought about it for awhile, but it's definitely not needed. At least im my opinion, I can hit inputs just fine with my controller typically, but if you still want a stick I'm sure you can ask around. The chat might be a good place to try.

You sir are actually quite lucky. As of right now the best SC crew is out of Chicago. I see it's a little more than an hour away from you but if you truly wanna get better at this game and work on being the best those are the guys to do it with. Also, they are quite possibly the greatest guys in the world. You won't be able to not have a good time with them. I strongly encourage you to seek them out and see about making arrangements for a meet up. I know they still have sessions quite often so by all means hit them up and get in on that. They're always looking for new guys to take in and mold into killers. Like I said, they really are some of the best guys you will ever meet so no worries about them being serial killers or any foolishness like that.

I would try just introducing yourself here and get some dialogue going. I have to reiterate that this is great opportunity for you to not only actually learn how to play this game correctly but to put you on that hopeful road you spoke of to the top. http://8wayrun.com/threads/team-mighty-chicago-tmchi.10027/page-20

Hey there, cool to see more smash players. I'm on PSN as krynxe so feel free to add me or send me VMs/PMs here on 8wr. I can give you any advice or help as well, or even compare elements of this game with smash if it would help at all lol. But I main Aeon so hit me up if you want matchup tips, but I also player other characters like pyrrha if you wanna practice online. Welcome to 8wayrun!
