In case you guys haven't heard the news, Namco Bandai just announced and released Tekken Revolution as a Playstation Network exlusive today at E3. It's available right now in the US (Europe and Asia to release tommorow 6/12):

It's free to play. Yes free. It uses a system called digital coins to play matches (which replenish over time - I believe 30 minutes). There are both arcade coins and versus coins. Of course you can also purchase premium coins where you use this like a real life quarter in an arcade and keep playing until you lose. I would imagine there will be some kind of premium purchase to play items given that this a "free to play" game.

Game features:
8 Characters at the moment: King, Paul, Lili, Marshall Law, Asuka, Steve, Alisa, and Lars
Arcade Battle
Player Match
Rank Match
Character Enhancement

So if you got a PS3, log on and go try it out.

Yeah.. I guess fighting games are all going "free to play" now in one form or another. Starting with Tekken, then Dead or Alive 5 Core Fighters and the upcoming Killer Instinct for next gen...

It's telling me that I can't play it offline. I can only play it while online.
I don't see any visible Practice Mode.
You need "tokens" to access features like Arcade and Online.
I don't have my Yoshimitsu straight from the start. ;-;

I didn't expect much from a free game, but I suppose it is nice for beginners who want to try Tekken but don't want to spend money just in case they don't like Tekken's system.

It's practically like Tekken Tag 2 except no tag and only solo. Arcade mode is "offline" - in the sense that its not PvP. and with stats uploaded to unlock features but yeah, no practice mode offline. I think also you need to be "online" in the literal sense in order play. Tokens are free and self-replenish over time although you can purchase them as well. Right now you should also be getting some bonus stuff like additional credits for signing up first day.

Think of it as a digital online arcade machine.
I think that's what they're going at with here which maybe pretty intersting (with other games too) if it catches on...

This game is SUPER SCRUBBY. You have launch punishable invincibility attacks that counter string characters (which I like), but at the same time it messes with frame disadvantage (which I dont like). This game is basically special versus where you dump stats into characters to make them stronger which is extremely dumb. You can only play for a limited time if you are bad and keep losing, but I don't care too much on that since I am getting win streaks. Also, you have to unlock characters by grinding so I am forced to play Lars over Jin. There are no 1P or 2P costumes from what I can tell, there is also no practice mode, and no offline vs. This game is extremely scrub friendly and made for casual gamers. Don't take this game seriously because it is basically scrub tactics to win.

Current theory I've been seeing around the internet is this was released as a kind of beta for some new mechanics they're thinking of using for Tekken x Street Fighter. Bounds being removed was a surprise to me. the Special Arts super armor is pretty nice. Not exactly sure what is special about the Critical Arts yet though. I've only done arcade mode and 3 online matches so far. Anyways, yeah...this game is just stupid fun. No real point in putting time into really learning it seeing as tournaments of any kind are pretty much impossible with no offline versus and the currency thing.

I agree for the most part with Wolf here.. The game overall can be fun, but no bounds and limited characters are pretty much negatives for me.. I don't like the special invincibility moves much either.. But with all that said, it's an appropriate F2P game for people on the fence about Tekken in general..

I like the lack of bounds because it reminds me of older namco games (T3, SC2) and I don't see why you can't just end your strings early to bait the launch punishable (and unlike Shoryu's, not fast) shoryu-style attacks. Mind games, tadah. Getting free king knee's vs. ken-style shoryu scrubs all night long was worth the money I never paid.

I dunno. The invincible moves are like, the exact same mind game as in any 2d style fighter... except they are nowhere near as good.

My biggest, BIGGEST complaint is the lack of offline versus and/or training mode, but harada is pretty much already confirmed a update with both of these in the near the future via his twitter.

When training mode comes out, I wouldn't be surprised if you can come up with some OS's versus the shoryu style attacks with crouch jabs/etc.

Bounds in my book can go eat a galaxy of dicks and die... But so can f2p games. If this shit becomes prolific with FGs in the future then I give up.

PS hi corw

i haven't downloaded it yet. but what characters do you start out with and do you have to buy characters if you want to play as them? is this game also pay-to-win centric?

You start with Law, Paul, Asuka, Kazuya, Lars, Lili, King and Jack-6. You unlock more over time for playing but i cant tell you how many.
So far i've unlocked Alisa and Bryan
There are no options for buying additional characters so far.
Is this game also pay-to-win centric?
Unfortunately yes, definitely. You can only play in exchange for coins which you get either over time or by buying tickets. When you play you increase your stats like damage and HP. Using tickets will also give you bonuses for experience points and gold.
