Real world weapons vs high fantasy and made up weapons

Which do you prefere? Do you think one should take precedence over the other?

Which weapon styles in the game do you like most? On what do you base your decision?

Is it the tier of the style? What real world weapons it represents? The escape from the mundane restrsints of the real world? The aesthetics of the wespon?

Are there any particular weapons you wish were represented? Any weapons you think are over represented?

There's room for both, and the existence of both is kind of what defines the series and makes it special, the combination of various styles from various weapons along with some supernatural stuff on the side. It should, though, be grounded in some sort of reality, which is why Z.W.E.I., Viola, and Algol get a lot more flak than the rest, since perhaps they went too far.

My favorite styles are... well, it's kind of hard to say, because I tend to play everyone almost equally, since I get bored just honing in on one style and playing it for the vast majority of the time, and it baffles me how people manage to do it. But if I have to make arbitrary selections, I'd go with Xianghua, Seong Mi-na, Raphael, Siegfried, and Cervantes.

I like the general flow of these styles and enjoy them across the different games where they change or don't change because they are somewhat grounded in reality while also having supernatural elements, some less than others, but the most important thing for me is how the weapon feels, whether or not I can believe the function of the weapon with respects to the user.

I do yearn for a proper spear user. Hilde doesn't quite fit the bill, since she also brings her shortsword into the mix. Seong Mi-na's naginata/halberd isn't quite the same, either. I understand that a lot of a spear's utility relies on thrusts, so it would be vertical-heavy, and somewhat lacking in horizontals, but hey, I enjoy playing Raphael across the games, so that's not an immediate turn-off for me. I feel like they could make it work.

It's more about having satisfying animations than a case of real vs fantasy. Most weapons in vidya are practically high fantasy anyway to make the weapons easier to see. A lot of real weapons are actually quite small to their depictions in video games.

My favorite styles are Amy, Seong Mina and Siggy. I'm with you on definitively wanting a dedicated spear user in the game for reasons I could rant about for hours and in fact already have including a few places on 8 Wayrun.

I like both, also I much prefer fantasy weapons to still be based in reality. Ivy's Snake Sword I think is the best fantasy weapon in the game. Functionally it is a mix between a sword, a whip and a whip dart plus some magic on top. Swords, whips and whip darts are all real, yet they are also completely different arms while in case of Ivy's Sword the fantasy side of things is there to explain how their properties all ended up in one weapon. That's how it should be done.
Z.W.E.I. and especially Viola on the other hand are way too much unsubstantiated fantasy for my tastes. Also I give a pass to Algol for being a boss character. Bosses are allowed to be over the top.

I don't give Algol a pass. But not cause his weapons are fantastical but stupid. Shooting bubbles, attacking with his rib cage and landing on you with a thrown is as I've said before, an absurd moveset unless your character is some form of weird twisted demon clown king.

Yes
Yeah
...Eh
...No
Yes!

So 3.5/5? I'd be ok with him as a boss character if he didn't shoot bubbles. The bubbles are dumb and insulting compared to bones, his throne, swords, and the size of his guns. (heh heh)

I do prefer the styles that are more realistic, but I'm totaly cool with styles that add fantasy elements. Just not ones that are entirely fictionally.

There is a lot i would like to see but in most cases i realize it wont happen. Example: anyone wanting a chain style weapon will probably always be dissapointed for any future game due to the existence and popularity of Ivy. It conflicts too much with her whip stance.

Both of the brand new characters on the last game were magic types and they were specifically what i wanted, summoner and crystal ball but i still didnt care much for either of them. I guess a lot of what a character is still comes down to attitude, stance and movement for me.

I love Algol and i mained Ezio pretty much exclusively last game. I remember thinking if the Apprentice carried a dagger rather than a lightsaber i would have mained him in an instant. I also like Ivy, Zasalamel and Cervantes so i guess all of that loosely translates into saying a basic, standard type of character wont cut it for me. I do understand however how important it is to have most of the cast being straight forward like that but it just isnt my preference.

The unfortunate thing is that we are on the sixth game now and pretty much most of the boxes have been ticked. I hate twinblades but in the back of my mind i always knew that would show up eventually.

There is room for both as long as they don't go way too far. In a fighting game focused on weapons, it would suck if we didn't have simple swords, but creativity can lead to some really good things. Ivy is an example of that, sure, she wasn't the first character in gaming to use a sword like hers, but she still stands out. There is, of course, a limit, as I don't really want things like the ones introduced in Dynasty Warriors 7 and 8 and their expansions, which include gattling guns, giant drill spears and stuff like that, that is way over the top.

Overall it just comes down to how well-animated and fun the style is for me. Obviously I have limits myself. Like Macaulyn said, having them veer into the level of absurdity that DW7 and 8 got to i something I'd very much like to avoid. But yeah I think more magic-oriented styles still have a place in the series if done well. That being said, I do have a preference for weapons that either actually exist or are inspired by weapon/tools that actually exist. And I'd much prefer the devs focus a bit more on introducing weapons like that into the series for new characters, since there are so many to choose from.

If they went with a couple more outlandish weapons we could see so many cool weapons. While I honestly have no preference usually, we have so many "basic weapons" (Swords, axes) that we miss out on more interesting things sometimes. Kreuzgriff was awesome, Quattor Orbis was interesting, (as much as I hate ivy) the snake sword is an amazing concept and it has a very good execution.

High fantasy and magic often adds to a character's character, though I do wish we delved into more outlandish real life weapon. I find I am more impressed by the high fantasy weapons.

Swords can have so many different styles, but they are really over-represented.
The weapon I want to see most is a double sided poleaxe, kind of like the ones anubites used in age of empires: mythologies.

I like to see new styles all the time. Egyptian aesthetics are my favourite so I would like to see at least one Egyptian.
What draws me most to styles is the characters I can make from them.

Favourites are Mitsu, Taki, viola (before she was broken), and Mighty Nighty and I want to play grøh so bad. Tira is cool too.

I appreciate the cross-culture weapons or even those that are similar. Here’s hoping Kilik can get something bladed if Mi-Na doesn’t show up and Ivy gets one of the mace back. Maxi generally has the one kusari-gama looking weapon.

Wouldn’t mind if Viola’s magic returns as CaS only at least.

Anything goes since Soulcalibur isn't strictly grounded in reality. Dynasty Warriors has consistently raised the bar as far as "absurd" weaponry.

Yeah I care about what characters I can create with the weapons also. Which is why I don't partically care for weird unreal weapons before at least the basic types are represented first. If every weapon is weird and unreal there are no characters that can be made from any kind of reasonable setting. Like I tend to use CaS to create D&D characters so we can use them to fight and have fun... There's no giant mega Chakrams in D&D and is a bit overly unique so that kind disables Tira for that purpose, etc. That said In some cases it's great like Viola makes a great generic magic user, so there is room for the more fantastical stuff. However, most characters will have weapons that really exist in some form. Too many weapons that do not exist over restricts CaS.

I mean, I wouldn't say anything goes. The more fantastical and outlandish a weapon is, the more it runs the risk of being downright stupid. I feel like there should be a limit to how absurd the weapons are allowed to get. Personally, I see Dynasty Warriors as a prime example of why such a limit should exist, because some of those weapons are just too much.

Well, what exactly is the limit? Because a lot of people got triggered by Viola even though she isn't that much more magical than Ivy, Zas, Algol, etc. SC6 is pretty blatant with it's fantasy. I think there's room for some liberties.

But I think the convo is odd anyway because we still don't even have the requested "normal" weapons either. Kusarigamas, bows, the styles SC3 wasted on CaS.

I think we should specifically have more strange weaponry. Like a weaponized instrument like a lute or violin. But then again, considering what Ivy, Taki, and Zas can do now, I'm surprised we don't have a dedicated mage. We won't anyway because of Geralt.

I think whatever limit there should be pretty much varies from person to person, as is evidenced by the very split reaction to Viola. Some people want purely physical, "real-world" weapons, and some don't care as long as they're fun. I'm mostly in the second group and my limit is basically defined by if I think the weapon/style is just plain stupid or not. For example, I can't stand Algol's moveset. Ribcage popping out, shooting death bubbles, summoning a throne out of nowhere? Ridiculous.
So I guess I don't actually have an easily defined limit?
My stance is that until we get some more of the real-world weapons that we've been asking for, PS should hold back just a bit on the more outlandish ideas. That is, weapons or styles based on nothing but the developers' weird fever dreams.
I mean, the only reason a lot of the weapons in, for example, Dynasty Warriors, are so ridiculous is because there are 80+ characters and they were just plain running out of ideas. There are still plenty of things PS can pull from. Koei was so intensely out of ideas that one of the characters straight up fights with a boat. That would be the level of ridiculousness that I hope PS steers clear of I guess.

And I'm with you on the instrument idea. I've always liked musical weapons myself. And I wouldn't be opposed to some kind of mage character, like maybe a character with a tome and staff or something?

I get that people dont like Algol's design. That is going to come down to preferences and that is perfectly understandable. I guess the reason he doesnt appear ridiculous to me is his "weapon" is loosely described as "anything". He just imagines whatever he wants, then it appears and i feel that is appropriate for boss character in a weapons fighting game.

About dw8, a boat is bad and all, but someone fought with a BENCH. a literal bench. And one dude literally uses multiple flying swords. FLYING, TELEPATHIC FLOATY SWOORDS.
oh, and a fan that literally makes a magic meteor.

The concept of his weapon being whatever he wants is interesting, but I just feel like the execution was generally a bit stupid. I thought blades coming out of his arms and back was fine and kinda cool but the bubble gun and ribcage thing was more than a little questionable in my opinion.

Well, the fan is just a fan. The whole magic meteor thing mostly stems from the over the top nature of the gameplay itself. As a weapon, it's fine. And I don't see much of a problem with floating swords myself, as I think the concept is really cool. That's no more outlandish that what Ivy's sword is capable of.
But yeah, the bench was also ridiculous, but I find a metal boat that summons actual waves out of nowhere to be a bit more absurd lol.
