Distant Worlds: an SCV Regular Cast Alternates Contest

I've got several favorites, but when I narrow it down to three, I'm left to vote for:

YoshaioIII's Oriental α Patroklos: This guy's got a simple look to him, and it works so well. The colors and the sticker work compliment each other, and he still looks good without armor.

Matty82's Chinese Ivy: The devil's in the details on this one, and I'm ready to sell my soul. The patterns and stickers look very organic, if that makes any sense, and I can completely see this being the result if Ivy had a Chinese aesthetic by cannon.

MistaKoo's Japanese Siegfried: This guy really conveys the image of a disciplined warrior that clears battlefields with style, like what Mitsurugi should have been. I think the gold insignia theme turned out rather nice.

A few that competed fiercely for my votes:

Matty82's Arabian Cervantes
MistaKoo's Japanese Nightmare
Gatsu's Japanese Algol

I vote for:
  • Matty82's Arabian Cervantes.
  • Gatsu's Japanese Algol.
  • NeclordX's Japanese Leixia.
MistaKoo - Egyptian Pyrrha O- Also a wee overlooked, I LOVE the way the Bast Vazard looks with her eyes, and the skirt.
Thanks. For that design in particular I hoped someone would comment on the shoulder pad, I thought that connecting the floating pad using an accessory/item was one of the cleverest final touches I've ever made :<

Side note, I LOVE the WTHIMatt? videos. That guy is awesome.
Yes he is, although I miss his silly dance.

Yes and that! I loved that! But I forgot to mention it...

Reminder: the polls close this Monday, July 3 at 11:59 US PDT.

Ah feck. I really wish I could have committed a little bit lot more to this but I just couldn't get anything to click and that deadline snuck up on me. Hopefully next time. Alright, to the votes:

Matty82's Arabian/Indian/Flamingo Pink Cervantes.

Yoshariolll's Oriental Alpha Patroklos.

N8thegr8's Indian Natsu.

Cheers!

The polls close and the contest ends tonight at 11:59 US PDT. I will announce the recipients of the Popular Vote and Judge's Choice Awards shortly after that. Get your votes in before then.

Contest over. The most recent standings update is final, therefore Matty82 takes the Popular Vote Award with Arabian/Middle Eastern Cervantes.

The write-up will be posted and Judge's Choice will be announced shortly.

I make it a point to leave detailed feedback when I can in order to help out and/or encourage other CaS makers, so I thought I should do that with the entries in this contest, as well.

+ = positive feedback
- = a point to improve upon
> = neutral comment
European Mitsurugi
+ good weapon choice
+ effective part choice in general
+ patterning on pants lends good worn texture
+ sea king's mail, new centurion, and shoulder pads work great together
+ good use of stickers on cape and front flap
- seems plain, needs something a little more

Japanese Leixia
+ sticker on sleeveless top is nice touch
- coloring is not convincing

Greek Viola
+ texture and color on absolution gear looks great
- very threadbare for the approach
Germanic Warrior Yoshimitsu/Yoshialifar
+ awesome stickerwork on belt
+ bronze armor is a nice comparison to yoshimitsu's red armor
+ good weapon choice
+ helmet detailing is simple, but effective
- pattern on pants seems out of place
- don't understand what you were going for with the cogwheel
- would've liked to see a full face mask for yoshimitsu

Oriental Alpha Patroklos
+ you nailed the color scheme
+ zipper sticker on wrist makes for awesome wristguard
- top seems out of place
- so does the headgear
- demonic fauld seems a little bulky, perhaps only in comparison to the thin top

Modern American Leixia
+ love at first sight. haha, embarassing, i know.
+ stickerwork on skirt and shirt adds well-needed detail and fits motifs on original model
+ pocket sticker on cropped jacket adds nice stitching detail
- bleeding from yellow sticker makes cropped jacket look dirtied
+ nice touch with forehead dot
+ part choice is very effective
+ flames sticker looks great on the pants
- not sure what you were going for with the pure rings
American Army Medic Raphael
+ detailed beanie does not make a convincing helmet, but is still somewhat impressive, considering limitations
+ use of turtle shell to both cover oxygen tank and make backpack is smart
+ detailing on arm band is pretty cool
+ green looks good...
- but the purple doesn't. too much purple, looks out of place, especially on the gun holster.

Highlands Warrior Patroklos
+ good part choice...
- but could probably use a little more, even just to give you more to work with
+ plaid pattern does a good job of
+ weapon choice is fitting
+ interesting detailing on the large stone necklace
+ part choice is very befitting of an ancient Greek figure
+ use of snake special equipment as belt is nice touch
> any reason for the snake motif?
+ i like the use of the helmet ornament in the hair
+ the gold-tipped wing looks great the way it's arranged on the dress
- the rest of the dress could've used some detailing. even a soft, subtle pattern would go a long way
Gorgon Algol
+ color scheme is executed very well
+ i like the use of the scale pattern on the pants to advance the snake/gorgon theme

Alexandra Algol
+ close helm, justice surcoat, and oathbearer's greaves starts to lend an interesting knight theme
+ goddess' feather brooch looks great on the close helm
- looks way too similar to patroklos 1P

Japanese Algol
+ i usually don't like looking at bare-chested men in baggy pants, but the part choice just makes sense, here.
+ centurion's plumes on the gauntlets looks great
+ color scheme is well done, as expected from Jess
Arabian Cervantes
+ excellent part choice. wildling vest is very reminiscent of the 1P coat
+ use of gold parts and feathers on the hat is also reminiscent of the 1P hat
+ interesting detailing on the large stone necklace
+ coloring/patterning on vest and hat looks great
- i don't understand why you used that star pattern on the pants

Chinese Ivy
+ use of butterfly sticker gives interesting detailing on the robe and sleeves
+ use of pattern on hat is a wise decision
+ special equipment on hat fits well
+ cool purple color scheme is visually appealing
- in my opinion, the legs don't have to be as bare as they are. it would help balance out the design.
Japanese Siegfried
+ the design INSTANTLY makes me think of Siegfried's 1P
+ color scheme replicated faithfully
+ use of special equipment on chest to replicate insignia on 1P breasplate is brilliant
- not sure about the choice of cape and it could use more detailing

Egyptian Omega Pyrrha
+ color scheme is very striking
- besides bast vizard and snake pauldron, i don't know what's particularly egyptian about this design

Japanese Nightmare
+ plus points for working with a difficult model with present part choices
+ lusca faulds work great with the samurai pants
+ helmet works well with the rest of the design
+ very cool-looking detailing on Manicas
+ also interesting detailing on the large stone necklace
+ use of special equipment on Manicas is striking
Robocop Hilde
+ boxing headgear + mask is an interesting build for robocop's helmet
+ interesting bird motif with championship belt and valkyrie armor
+ use of earrings as eyepiece is smart

Bangladeshi Hilde
+ color scheme is striking and pleasing to the eye
+ centurion's plume works surprisingly well with prayer helm
- not sure what part of this design is supposed to look distinctly south asian, except the helm

European Queen Hilde
+ maroon and gold looks great on the chosen parts
- overall part choice seems too simple. very much like ivy's 2p with a crown.
+ color scheme is striking, well-executed
+ interesting patterning and sticker work on the pants
+ thunder god drums matches algol and the theme very well
- would look better with something other than the script pattern

The Judge's Choice goes to MistaKoo's Japanese Siegfried. It hits most directly the type of CaS I was aiming for with this contest. The color scheme and armored design immediately bring to mind Siegfried's 1P and the samurai armor part choice clearly displays the country of choice. Defining characteristics and details like the Schwarzwind logo and the breastplate insignia were also faithfully conserved.

That brings all contest business to a close. I'd like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated. The interest in the prompt means a lot to me, since this is my first time doing something like this.

At this point, I'd like to ask for your feedback on the contest. Feel free to bring up anything you liked or didn't like about the contest. What did you think about the prompt? Was it interesting, outlined well enough, etc? Would you change anything about the way it was run? Feel free to provide any constructive criticism. I think there are already some mixed feelings about this contest which are most likely well-founded.

I'm really honored. That design is one the best I've ever done, it made me use and learn Siegfried after ignoring him for a long time. This alone made me love the contest.
Also surprised about the Japanese Nightmare reception. I thought his design and the idea were too obvious.

This is just me but I might have made a no hair color changing rule, also a no personality changing look/clothes. I know it's stupid but these are two criteria I automatically judge edits by and I'm kinda OCD about these stuff.

Egyptian Omega Pyrrha
- besides bast vizard and snake pauldron, i don't know what's particularly egyptian about this design
Nothing, the nationality was an after thought since it started as Indian with the prayer helm (which I didn't like). In fact the snake pauldron in itself was a last minute addition.
I'm still unsure what to do with the design now, the vizard is perfect for her but disjoint from the rest of the design.
I might give the costume to vanilla Pyrrha (which I started using recently) and slap the vizard on one of her other edits I made.

Hey guys, the pictures of the famous "Arabian Cervantes" are all broken. Can anyone re-upload them here?

Although this contest finished a while ago, would it be alright to continue sharing ideas and getting compliments feedback on the creations? This really looked like a lot of fun! :)

If there's enough interest, I'll consider doing a second round. I'm doubtful about that, though, since the first didn't drum up as much participation as I thought it would. For now, I suggest posting your designs in your own thread. Lots of us here would be happy to give feedback that way, myself included. That way, we wouldn't be necro-ing threads that are old news.

The "whatever-you-want-to-call-it" Cervantes pics seem to be up, now.

Actually, I'll try to enter a simple custom if you promote the challenge some more. I feel many of these wonderful CAS of our cast could be shared here. So even if you didn't get first, at least you can post them there as extra stuff to inspire others. =D

I honestly don't understand all the hype about Arabian Cervantes. He doesn't look "Arabian" at all, if anything he looks like an Indian Sikh. He looks really cool (I particularly like the beard), but not very middle eastern.

That being said, I love Indian Natsu and Japanese Siegfried.
