Alexandra's 2018 S/S CaS Showcase

Alexandra

Fearless Eyes
So after a very long hiatus from the SC series, 8WR, and CaS, I've decided to jump back in thanks to my excitement for the new game. Below are the characters I've either revisited or created specially for this thread and my own creations' story. Let me know what you all think! I'd love to get some feedback on designs.

1. Andromeda: An adversary of the Alexandra sisters and their sister-in-law following her brother Rothion's marriage to Sophitia. During the events of SCIII, she vows to protect her niece and nephew, but fails to save Pyrrha from Tira. When Sophitia does not return immediately, she sets out to hunt followers of Soul Edge and ends up murdering two women she thinks to be witches serving Nightmare. These women were daughters of Epione, the occult advisor to King Henry IV of France. Eventually, she ends up serving the Ottoman sultan as a trusted member of his council and head of his guard. She is a character I've been creating in the Soul series since SCIII, so I've attached photos of her from that game through SCV to show the evolution of her design.

2. Epione: This is a character who I initially, embarrassingly named Scarlett (clever right?) in SCIII who I've now renamed to Epione, after the Greek goddess of pain relief. She is highly influential in the courts of western Europe, going so far to becoming the occult advisor to King Henry IV of France and eventually the Holy Roman Emperor in the 17th century. She wishes to spin chaos to depose leaders, but her agenda isn't entirely clear. Andromeda and Epione are bitter enemies and their rivalry began during the events of SCIII. Andromeda's blessed weapons were able to harm and kill Epione's two daughters, making the immortal sorceress vulnerable and paranoid.

3. Shazia: This character comes from the Ottoman Empire, specifically Iran. She is of mixed descent, her mother being from Cyprus. She is a scholar and works for the Sultan, researching religious treasures. Her discovery of Soul Calibur and Soul Edge leads to a full scale investigation of Eastern Europe, which she is given full jurisdiction over.

4. Sun: A mid-tier noble from Korea, she was meant to marry into a more powerful family before running away to China. She became an artisan to make enough money to live, until a mercenary company hired her for a job in the Mediterranean to seek out Cervantes de Leon, where she became acquainted with an older Andromeda at the turn of the 17th century. After quitting a menial guard contract, she began traveling throughout Asia Minor and eventually was offered a job contract with the sultanate through her acquaintance Andromeda.

5. Lukas: The sultan's illegitimate, only son and Shazia's half-brother (they share a mother). He is a former student of Setsuka's who engaged in a physical relationship with Patroklos before the events of SCV. While seen as a stain on the sultanate's reputation for his unusual lifestyle and debauchery, he is well loved by the people. Upon the sultanate's discovery of the two swords, he is chosen by his sister to travel to Europe in search of them.

6. Felix: Epione's last surviving child, he is a tool in her plan to seize power from the French as he and Henry IV's daughter are of an age. Felix is overprotected and sheltered, but to earn Henry IV's daughter's hand he must find the cursed sword Soul Edge for his liege.

I love the backstories and the pictures of them from previous games to show how they've grown and yet still retain their personalities. I have to say I find Epione's 2P to be quite bland but, other than that they're great :)

Thank you!
I agree her 2P is definitely towards the weaker side of these. My initial redesign of it was too busy but now I see I've overcorrected that a bit. I'm planning to go back in soon and work on some more characters/3Ps for the main cast/recolors so I'll revisit her, as well.

Great :D Intrigued by your 3P ideas since you've always been creative :)

I will add one thing, maybe it's just the photos but, often if you have a block of flat colour, a way of making it more appealing and to provide some depth is to use a two or more patterned texture and make both colour channels very slightly different, enough that your eyes will notice some depth but won't be obviously a pattern. My favourite for this is the tiger strips. It makes it look more like real material.

I'll have to try the tiger strips out! Thanks for the tip :)

Interesting work, Alexandra. Here’s some thoughts on your SCV designs. All of my suggestions are optional and, more often than not, completely unnecessary. But SCV's surprisingly powerful CAS engine can help you personalize your design a bit more.

Andromeda 1P: It’s hard pulling off such a simple earth-toned color scheme, but you do so with panache. I love the subtle patterns, the layering, and the bling. The laurel wreath, the bracelets, and the snake necklace suggest an Amazon theme. It’s an interesting contrast to her rival, Sophitia, who’s more of a holy warrior. She looks great as is, but if you want to apply a more personal touch to the design, you could throw in a few hair extensions (like feathers SpecEq) or even braids (like stripe patterned crescent moon or butterfly antennae SpecEq). You can also subtly shape her face (like bringing out cheekbones) using make-up set to skin tone. If you feel like griming her up, you can also apply that black/white mountain pattern (set to skin tone, of course). If, for whatever reason, you feel like adding fur to the design, you could also throw on that raccoon tail onto her arm, torso, or pretty much wherever you see fit. Maybe tucked between her breasts as lining for her breastplate. Also, you can lower your camera so you don’t cut off her boots by holding L2 + R2 and dragging the left stick downwards for a better view of your design.

Andromeda 2P: This one is my favorite. I love how you pull together the brown, green, and blue. Just the right amount of color contrast. The proportions are just perfect on this one too - in terms of color and equipment distribution. Still fits that whole wild-child theme you seem to be going for. One thing I’d suggest is whitening her necklace for just a bit more pop. Another thing I’d consider is swapping out that head band for a crown of thorns-type gig. Like using the chains SpecEq or wrapping the beetle horns SpecEq around her head and applying that leather-like pattern. Again, if I have extra SpecEq, I usually use them to customize the hair.

Epione 1P: Good sorceress design. But it looks like you have a problem with equipment “shine,” where the default equipment color (like the turquoise on the skirt) kinda bleeds through. All you have to do is select color all, and set the color to grey to remove that weird shine effect. That’s actually how I start most of my CaS. Also sets a nice blank slate for you to work off of. I see that you’re going for a relatively practical and form-fitting design, but don’t be afraid to cheese it up a little. Try altering the shape of the blouse using stickers. Like applying a butterfly sticker (colored black) onto her chest and blending it into her blouse.

Epione 2P: This is definitely the least cohesive of your designs. However, I really like the work you did on the pants. The whole moon and stars thing goes well with the magician theme. I’d swap out the samurai jacket for something more form-fitting though. You might be able to make the crow mask work if you used more bird-like equipment though.

Shazia 1P: This one is weird. I’ve never seen that hat paired with that dress before. Bold. I like it. It looks like you gave her a tie because she’s some kind of book worm. This is an absolutely original and fascinating concept, but I don’t think you’re selling it hard enough. You might be able to carve out an undershirt/dress shirt for her using white pocket stickers. Think DC comics’ Zatanna. Actually this would totally be amazing and, surprisingly, doable.

Shazia 2P: Beautiful in its simplicity. Blue/gold can never go wrong. I will say that the gloves are a bit plain in comparison with the pants though. Maybe just set them to white to match the blouse. Again, hair extensions if you have the time. You can actually use SpecEq to make a custom necklace. Like the ant antennae for the string and the halo (inserted into the chest) for the jewel. You could also use shiny stickers like the bump-mapped star. God, I love the CaS system. The sheer number of options can be overwhelming though.

Sun 1P: I love the coloring on this one. The blue, green, and gold really make this design pop. Again, lower your goddamn camera so we can see the shoes.

Sun 2P: most of her design is hidden by the camera angle. Overall, still goes well with the whole Asian theme. More Japanese than Korean due to the pants, but whatever.

Lucas 1P: I like the whole forest ranger color scheme and the subtle pattern on the vest and waist wrap. The calligraphy pattern on the underwear is a bit too flamboyant for my tastes. I also don’t think you have enough asymmetry on the overall design to sell that huge arm thing yet, but with a few equipment swaps you just might be able to pull it off.

Lucas 2P: I really like the simplicity on this one. Boots, gloves, and hat. A little bit of detail everywhere.

Felix 1P: Not feeling this one.

Felix 2P: I’m digging the grey and red color scheme. Very badass. The eye on the bandana? That’s also an interest touch. I don’t really see anything else on the design that explains the Cyclops eye, but maybe throw in a bit more of a monster theme to make it work.

Overall, I can see you have a lot of talent and passion for create-a-soul. You're particularly adept at making weird color combinations like blue/green/brown look amazing. You also bring a lot of fresh ideas to the table, like that weird Shazia 1P and Lukas 1P. Your Andromeda 1P & 2P are definitely your finest pieces from this batch. Definitely rocking that female barbarian look.
I do recommend that you check out my guide on CaS techniques:

First, I just want to say thank you so much for taking the time to write out such detailed critiques, I really appreciate that you pointed out specific items and patterns to try. Generally when I go into CaS, I have two questions in mind: is what I'm making stylish/stylized enough (to me) and is it true to the visual story I've already told with previous creations and costumes? Details come after, and often I get lost in the silhouettes and general shapes of looks and not the depth/layering enough.

As for patterns and stickers, I'm always really hesitant to use them so boldly because I just don't really know how to apply them that well. My main technique in CaS is simply "would I wear this?" and if my creations can speak for myself enough, I clearly would wear basically anything lol. A hallmark of my own personal style is powerclashing so I appreciate you saying I can make even unlikely digital color groupings work!

Anyway, I've been working on these creations more since I first posted and I'll try out some of the techniques you suggested when I have some time today! I should have a few more updates posted soon.
