Alternative Controller for Xbox

Hi there,

It's more of a technical issue, I suppose, but I hope I'm not completely off-topic in this forum. Anyway, is it just me or is the Xbox controller really that useless in fighting games? I'm new to Xbox (and to SCIV, for that matter - but that's hardly a problem, read on). Being a SCIII veteran, I do have tons of experience with PS2 standard/alternate Dulashock-type controllers. In fact, never had any trouble with those in SCIII. The Xbox controller, on the contrary, is outright maddening. Whether it's not calibrated precisely or just plain hard to use properly, I can't tell. Anyway, it's sort of frustrating losing rounds to mindless Kilik, Sieg and Asta spammers on XBL (you know, judging from the XBL characters repertoire, one may get the impression SCIV, just like good old Mortal Kombat I for PC, has only seven to choose from: Kilik, Siegfried, Asta, Voldo, Ivy, NM, Cervy) just because there is no way I can consistently pull off, for instance, 236236AA's and, sadly, even 236B's with Sophie. I'm ashamed to admit, sometimes I can't execute 1K's and 3B's precisely. I probably end up looking like an incompetent scrub religiously spamming idiotic moves over and over again... Ah, whatever :)

I guess the point of this rant is: is there an alternative Xbox controller better suited for fighting games? I've done some google search on the topic, to be sure, but I'd like to hear some advice from the horse's mouth, so to say.

Thanks in advance!

lol i feel your pain, i used to curse my 360 pad ( i use d-pad). but now i honestly dont have any problem with it. i used to miss a few 236 moves, but now every thing is 100% including sc's 'harder' inputs' . how long have you been using the 360 pad for? the newer pads are better quality as well, on my old one the d-pad now rattles when you shake it, therefore useless. i think you should stick with the 360 pad for a while before you spend money.

I've been using it for a week or so. As I said, I'm new to the whole Xbox thing. You may be right, I feel I'm gradually beginning to struggle less with 236/214 (for some reason, 214 seems easier to execute - probably a matter of spacing, totally psychological, that is). And yeah, I had to resort to using directional pad and control stick alternately, too, which is kind of ridiculous - after all, it's not a flight simulator :) Still having a goddamn hard time executing Sophie's 236236AA, though.

214 seems easier to execute
it is easier! i will always toggle for the 2p slot when playing sophie or cass' , hence youre 236's will be easier. keep the 360 pad for a month or two, i dont think you'll have any problems

360 controller is horrible for fighting games. its better suited for shooters. your best bet if you are serious about fighting games is to get an arcade stick, ranging anywhere from 50-150 dollars (you get what you pay for). if you play them casually and arent too concerned with being competitive or putting a lot of time into the game, the 360 controller is fine. i, for one, am very happy to have made the switch to stick.

Thanks for your reply!

I fall into that shadowy category somewhere in the middle, I guess :) In fact, used to be a competitive player back in SCIII age, when I had much more time and energy to invest in the process. Now it's more of a nostalgia thing. Moreover, XBL is definitely not a place to get back to form, though I do have a couple of (ex-)competitive friends offline.

Now, concerning the arcade stick: can you make a specific suggestion, perhaps (manufacturer/model)?

It's a bit unfair, though, isn't it? :)

Well, if you really want to invest on a arcade stick. A hori is a good choice (others may disagree though) but if you insist on a pad, you could use the MadCatz Street Fighter 4 FightPad. It's good for fighting games. I use it for fighting games when I'm too lazy to setup the stick.

It depends on style. All peripherals have different advantages. Xbox is generally bad for githers because of the horrid dPad, but the analog can be far superior to PS3 which can help with some moves like Ivy;s throws. However the PS3 controller is generally just good. It may not be the best, but the thing is just damned practical. I prefer stick honestly.

Solutions:

Stick: SF4 TE's are nice if you can pony up the cash (I don't like the SE at all). You can also buy a crap ass one and buy new buttons and joy stick.

Controller: Get a PS1-3 controller and look for an xbox360 adaptor.

As for a controller on the xbox...you're stuck looking for any brand attempting to imitate the the PS controller and then you suffer low quality crap usually. Though the SF4 pads MAY be good, i dunno. Don't know the quality since the SE and TE stick are so different to me.

Sticks are generally the best answer, but SC can easily be played well on PS pads. Nearly all Hildes (even stick players) use pad. Malek uses a fricken PS1 1/ converter...and iCS's with the fuckin dpad! WTF!

Thanks a lot. I was totally unaware of the latter possibility. I'll definitely look for an adaptor.

but SC can easily be played well on PS pads.

No doubt. That's what I've been doing in SCII & III days.

I'd imagine there be some lag with that xcm device, even though its probably minimal. Anyone know where I might be able to find a way to make the Mad Catz SF TE stick dual compatible via hardware mod? A schematic maybe? parts? I have the PS3 version of the stick and I like to add xbox 360 compatibility with it.

I'll be modding my TE stick for xbox as well and yes there are parts. Where to buy i don't know yet, but there are tutorials i've seen that allow of dual compatibility INSIDE the stick. Whether the lag is an issue I don't know. But I hate how many friends have 360 and I'm forced to use that crap ass controller and not my stick.

Well the simple answer would be to get a PS3. :-)

Jokes aside, the X360 pad is awful for fighters but great for shooters. I think the route you should take should be dependent on how often you are going to play fighting games. If you are just going to be playing them every now and then, you could do like I did and swap the D-pad from the X360 with one from an old small Xbox controller. They're like $10 bucks now or less. Plus they look better than the standard d-pad.

If you forsee yourself down the road playing them alot, then I would invest in a stick. If you're not competing in any tournaments, then go with a converter for a PS pad since lag won't be as much of a concern.
