Art Contest entries

Impending_Doom and bobbybrute : Thanks for the compliments ^^ I want to do more complicated and colored SC in the future as an art project for school.

Ivyfanboy: That's fine. As said, it was a small contest. I was told maybe I should share them with this community. Sorry for making it ugly.

FYI, I didn't really take much time on either, I was just having fun. Deviantart isn't where my real art is put. My real portfolio is for school.

Sorry again for hurting your eyes.

You have a good base, but there is some room to definitely grow. It looks like a person, attire wise Sophi is there (however not in the face or build), and there are things that need cleaning up such as her sword. Ashlotte's pretty good, but also loses some of the characters facial features and tone (her forehead to nose is a tad off for a person as well). So just clean up some of the line work (most of it is good), but put some focus on the faces. I know you're going for the anime angle, but even as limiting as anime is perceived, you still have a lot of options with a face to still have your own take on a predesigned character and have it transfer. They would be fine if they were you're own character, but they had an identity to portray and outside the accessories they don't. Even still they're a bit on the standard anime face with no individuality among other characters spare the bod they're attached to.

Another thing is, what is the picture of. Is it just a character? Is something happening? Does the pose or shapes present an attitude to express the character deeper? SC is a combat game and characters have origins as well as a few expressions featured in the game that shed light on personality. Bring that to the table by putting them in a pose or action. Maybe Sophi is wandering in search of Cas, preparing to fight an off screen foe, or being spunky with her upbeat childish nature? If I drew Captain America sitting down, I would probably draw him either mourning or tired from combat. I can't justify a good reason to have him sit. He's strong and a upfront as he carries a symbol as a hero. So I would only put him kneeling, or sitting low if something were depressing, agonizing, or in a matter of respect.

You should also take the next step and shade it (whether gradient or vector-esque comic book style) if it's going to a competition.

Don't feel bad, despite my review. It is actually better than what I can freehand (I'm a different genre of artists).

You're not a very good critic.

Fine. The drawing is perfect and I will never amount to it's awesomeness. This is the top of the mountain, there is no greater. To say anything would be heresy amongst the presence of perfection.

No in all honesty I gotta step off my box for once. I made a mistake and misread the OP where he states the small competition in Madison. I looked at them on deviantart and assumed it was a deviantart contest which tends to draw many upon many submissions of high caliber and while these are fine I was comparing them to the professional artists who i know would've submitted. In that assumption I was a bit confused as why these were being posted as it seemed he was bragging for some reason rather than just saying "hey here's my art" (ironic in light of this all). So I apologize on that. I'll do a wee bit of editing now. However I will leave the pointers for improvement as without my misguided cynicism I still stand by them. So sry...IFB made a nig mistake!

So sry OP bout that, bit of an oversight by me there. I had the wrong assumption for why you were showing your work and that wasn't cool at all. But, I hope my advice I gave can help you. Sorry for shootin you down like that.

I think I just invented the online apology. O.o

pedant alert!

but lets see more pictures.

One thing i've noticed is that SC2 (and probably SC1) had a LOT more fanart compared to SC3/4...

why is that so ?

A. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and this includes 'art'. Some of the best artists in history paid no attention to what art was supposed to be, but rather composed what was in their heart. Keep up the passion, and realize you will ALWAYS receive criticism. It's the way of life and the way of the world.

B. Learn from what others say in their critiques, and then use the information/skill and incorporate it into your style.

Ivyfanboy is not incorrect, but in the end it is your work and YOU need to be happy with it. My guess is that you can learn from him though :)

-one guy's opinion whose only ability in art is digital ;-)

You're not a very good critic.

No he is just an asshole. It's a picture IFB some people will like while others, obviously, will not. You complained about Sophitia's body and face, but I thought they were done very well. I really like her expression. You don't have to be an art student to appreciate art, and at the same time you being an art student means nothing. Do you ever wonder why when you walk into an art museum, and you rjaw drops at some of the things in there. If you felt the same about every picture then art wouldn't even have any value or meaning so mister critic why don't you show us your art? You've already brought your epeen into this topic so man up and show us your art. If your an art student we should all just go crazy about how wonderful your pictures are, right?

Wow I can't believe what I just read. On the music side, it's like someone telling me to change the structure of my Dm7 chord from open to slightly more open. "Deep" criticism can be welcome of course, but only if the artist asked for it, usually from a panel of peers that person trusts. Creative work is always difficult to accurately impose upon, because we, as the audience, don't know the exact situations, limitations, and goals the artist had in mind when creating a specific work. At some point (myself included), an artist reaches a point where only they themselves can say whether or not their own work is finished, or can be improved upon.

But getting back on track, congratulations on winning the contest and thank you for sharing your work! What was the prize? I really like your art style and I wanna see a Setsuka. D:

Hey I admitted what I did was fucked and completely unneeded, let it be. But those are some good tips. This person has potential, he did a lot of work to get the accessories and attire down and most of it is very respectable. I could delete them, but if this person has put this much effort in, I feel he deserves as 3rd party opinion as I feel they would make use of it. A lot of artists welcome critique, on the one note that it's constructive. But once again, yes i was 100% in the wrong for my initial posts and what not and Im not gonna argue that.

olololololololol.

I stopped reading here. DeviantART is failed students, emos and hentai lovers.

No exceptions.

A lot of current professional comic book artists post pretty regularly on DA, I use the site primarily to check out their work. Of course it's full of garbage, it's the internet. Or you could say, it's the world as a whole, depending on how negative you want to get.

Do professional artists use DA as their main place of doing business? Probably not that often, but there are professional artists on there.

Everywhere has a few Jewels in the rough sure, but there's a reason people don't get rich from wandering through shitty fields and beaches with Metal Detectors.
