Dealing with spammers

Hey there,

(semi online related, but could as well go for multi-player on same console)

The other night some french guy (I don't understand french, but I noticed the word 'spameur', probably meaning spammer I guess) accused me of being a spammer and DC'ed the game. Tough luck.

Well. My question is this. How do you deal with spammers, and do you find it ok or not? (by spamming I mean, just inputting one after the other attack all the time without much thought, maybe even the same attack all the time).

On one hand, since spamming is really easy to do, I assume that it's not a very good tactic and that you'll get beaten easily if you try. So why should it be a problem?

On the other hand, I do have problems myself dealing with this. Mainly because I'm probably not a very good player.

Do you find it easy to beat players once you figure out they're just mindlessly (more or less) spamming attacks, or do you realise that now you don't stand a chance against this superior technique and you just DC?

Just interested to know. And in case you're wondering why/if I spam. I guess I do, mainly when I become stressed and don't know what else to do (especially if my opponent has only very little bar left), or I don't know the character I'm trying out. Otherwise I tend to feel I at least know which moves I'm executing.

All opinions welcome :-)

Just learn which moves are unsafe and punish them. Many spammers spam AA, which oftentimes is high. You can duck under them and poke them in the knees. If they spam verticals, just sidestep and punish. They also won't block and if they do, they won't block low very often. Capitalize on that. Strings that aren't combos become combos because they'll try hitting you between getting hit.

Voila, problem solved.

Block. CH combo, now that's what I like to call big damage.

Most characters cannot attack well at disadvantage if at all. Show your opponent the worth of the guard button.

Spamming is, by definition, the absolute easiest thing to defeat in a fighting game. They are giving you opportunities because you know exactly what they are going to do next. Alternatively, they are giving you a free lesson in one particular move or set of moves, and you should take advantage of it. If you know the game well enough you can be very fancy with this, e.g. just guard, jumping over people, aGIs, etc. But even the lowliest player should be able to follow this simple formula:

1. Block.

2. Punish.

3. There is no step 3.

Anyone who can’t do the above simply needs to learn what basic moves they can punish with. I’m not talking about hyper-specific complex matchup theory, I just mean what your character’s BnB high-speed punishers are. If in doubt, try just AA, unless of course they are spamming a TC move. Seriously. The point isn’t to land a huge damage combo (well, do that if you know how), the point is to shut down their offense and force them to make mistakes by switching to less spammable moves. Then you can start getting creative with your own character’s more advanced tools.

The only worry in this situation is falling for a frame trap or mixup bait, but if they’re truly spamming (e.g. attack type 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1... not attack type 1, 1, 2), that won’t happen.

I only define "spamming" to be "using the same move over and over". Its fun to sit there punishing the move they spam the same way each time until they stop doing it or ragequit. That really says "I know what you are doing and you are stupid for continuing to do it"

I counter spam. I've gotten so much hate mail from spammers (Mostly Xiba's) that I'm a hacking spammer who does nothing but block when all they do is his low sweep attack.

Block and punish has already been mentioned. Most 2A's (down A) will also stop spammers and allow you to punish since they tend to use high attacks. Depending on what character you use you can also keep a distance and use an attack that works at long range. I always like to use Leixia's 44B against spammers. They always run into it.

Punish. This means block the enemy's attack, and then counter-attack with your fastest moves. This might help:

Thanks a lot, I think that video explained some very important stuff I have missed until now. I think I know why frame data is important now ;-)

I knew that 'block'n'punish' was the way to go. Problem has probably been that I'm either:

1) Too impatient, thinking "Hey I can go now, yeah, it's safe...." ==> ouch!
2) Forgetting to block but just spam slower attacks myself ==> ouch!
or...
3) Trying to punish with an attack that is too slow. "Heh, he missed, gonna launch him now with my uber advanced thingy" ==> getting caught with a counter hit ==> ouch!

Maybe I should revise my strategy, focus on faster attacks. I just always have this feeling that when it's finally "my turn", I need to whip out some serious damage. But this is often too slow, and then I just get hit again.

Yes, spammers are predictable, buuut in the presence of lag + lack of experience, spam can create an illusion of being uninterruptible because you try to react after you block the last hit, which, if added with time lost to lag, is already too late. What you want to do is to buffer your input earlier. Remember, if it took 0.2 sec to respond to your input, it will also take 0.2 sec to drop your guard after letting go of G. Good luck!

There is no such thing as "spamming". There is only button mashing. And mashing is a telltale sign that the player doing it has no freaking clue how to play the game, and should seriously take a look at the command list for their character.

In my honest opinion the people who play this game online who use the term "spamming" are people who have little to no experience with fighting games, and don't know that "mashing" is the proper term. "Spamming" has a very broad definition when it comes to them, and the majority of those people who accuse and kick others for "spamming" (when they won legitimately) have childish mentalities and either don't want to look bad in front of their peers or are salty as fuck.

On the other hand, truly good players can easily counter spa-I mean mashing. That's when you know that when you get kicked from a room for "spamming", you know for damn sure that victory is yours.

Actually, spamming and button mashing are two different things. I think people have a tendency to interchange the two terms a lot.

In SCIV online play, my ace in the whole to buttom mashing most of the time was side stepping, ducking, and guard impacts. I haven't played SCV online yet but I'm pretty sure the first two would still work. Side Step the verticals and punish or for the horizontal moves, duck and attacks their knees/feet.

Yoshi's 6K, I tear noobs up with that damn kick, and counter damage is intense, and what's really funny is how most of them just WONT block, they keep trying to swing, lol
I especially see a shit load of Maxi/Mitsurugi spammers, Maxi sometimes catches me off guard cause he can mix shit up, and you don't really know for a fact what's coming next. But I usually use my 6K, or spam lows, or start teleporting and trolling back, you never get noob'd out with Yoshi, not by my experience. If they do win, surely wasn't from spamming AA or BB.
