Hey everyone! I am required to write a paper on dreams for my general pychology class and survey 10 fine pillars of the community. Please choose and answer appropriately. List your age, gender, and ethnicity. If all y'all look alike, some of you may end up being 20 year old females. If you don't feel comfortable publicly posting, then please PM me. Thanks in advance and feel free to share your weird dreams!

Which dream perspective to you mostly agree on?

· The psychoanalytic view (the wish-fulfillment theory) says that dreams are disguised symbols of repressed desires. It has received little scientific support.

· The biological perspective (the activation-synthesis hypothesis) argues that dreams are simply unimportant by-products of random stimulation of brain cells.

· The cognitive view sees dreams as information processing; they help us

sort through everyday experiences, solve problems and think creatively.

1) Falling dreams are most common to me, I have them every other night or so.

2) Sexual experiences are the rarest, I've had one that I can I remember.

3) People are more likely to have dreams based on their experiences or wants.

The biological perspective seems most suiting to my beliefs. Despite that, I do believe that dreams can be highly symbolic, but the symbols only have meaning to the person dreaming and do not necessarily have a universal meaning. I also believe they can be helpful.

__x_20. Seeing yourself as dead

1. Most commonly dream about being tortured/killed or family members dying.

2. Dream least of flying.

3. Age, gender, and culture contribute to how we dream inasmuch as they provide the filters we use to render our brains' dream activity (semi-)intelligible. Without the context of experiences, worries, and the cultural scaffolding on which they hang, many of the above categories of dream aren't even possible. For instance, there's not some universal notion of appropriate dress, and thus dreams of being dressed inappropriately are entirely culturally contingent.

I tend to fall somewhere between the biological and cognitive perspectives, though I suppose the biological one would be primary. Our brains do odd things while we sleep, and some of those odd things involve various brain-bits activating in such a way that invites us to impose order on it. In other words, the cognitive perspective may be true enough, but it's likely a byproduct of the biological.

I imagine white folk dream about making mad money and ruling the world. Old people probably dream about the good ol' days. I think females probably dream about tampon commercials. ------ More appropriate answer - I imagine that people of a more privelaged upbringing would be more likely to respond with dreaming of money. People who have lived for longer than 40 years probably would dream mostly of times passed. A female probably dreams about certain things that should not be on tv and are offensive to the opposite sex.

1) Which one dream theme was most common (most frequently occurring in your dreams)? Arriving late since I often take a nap before work and dream that I'm late as fuck.

2) the least common? Death of a loved one.

3) What are your thoughts on how people might differ on their responses according to age, gender, culture and so on. Dreams are extensions of your personal experiences so they're going to wildly fluctuate depending on several variables including the ones aforementioned.

1) Which one dream theme was most common (most frequently occurring in your dreams)?
I'll have to be honest. after years of RARELY ever having any sexually themed dreams, I'd have to say that it is now at this point overtaken my next most common theme which was me fighting something or being attacked and death of a loved one.

2) the least common?
From the rest of the list that I can remember having, I'd say fire.

3) What are your thoughts on how people might differ on their responses according to age, gender, culture and so on.
Different experiences cause different stimuli to be reacted to.

Which dream perspective to you mostly agree on?

Mostly the "biological perspective".

P.S.

I was gonna say almost exactly what Hates said about the last question (not all as flowery though)but who wants to follow what that fag says. So you get my "mostly" answer.

1) Recently, I've stabbed a guy in the neck with a key and fought off an insane woman trying to kill me. I'll go with being attacked/fighting. I lost the latter fight though.

2) The least is sexual experiences.

3) Well, dreams are going to vary for all of those categories of people due to different wants, experiences, thoughts, etc.

Mostly just the psychoanalytic view.... but I don't think dreams are these all-time symbols that show us the way of life. Just little things, like they could be symbolic towards what's going on in your life, or something you've been thinking a lot about recently.

Also, I don't think it is a good idea to say "It has received little scientific support. ". biased statement impacts results.

Oh unrelated but most of my dreams are in 3rd person so...

Sexual experiences and studying.

2) the least common?
Swimming and being dressed inappropriately.

3) What are your thoughts on how people might differ on their responses according to age, gender, culture and so on.
Well the actual images and motifs of dreams tend to be echoes of past experiences so of course your culture will define the content of your dreams, but I'd imagine that the feelings associated with dreams are fairly universal. e.g. anxiety might manifest itself in a dream about failing an examination, but just because someone from another society doesn't have exams, it doesn't mean their anxiety can't manifest itself in a different kind of dream.

Mostly the biological perspective, but I'd agree with the cognitive one to an extent too.

Though I'd avoid saying that psychoanalysis has little scientific support - might dissuade people from picking that option.

Edit: whoops, just noticed Sett said the same thing.

1) Which one dream theme was most common (most frequently occurring in your dreams)?
  • Being unable to communicate. I often dream of being in a place where people speak a foreign language I'm unable to understand, and I usually have something very important to say but no one can understand me. Other times I just straight up can't talk. So I guess in a way you could say being smothered. (?) Or maybe frozen with fright. (?)
  • Flying and sex with my crushes are the other big ones.
2) the least common?
  • Swimming in an endless ocean while pursued by a red, Russian-speaking shark.
3) What are your thoughts on how people might differ on their responses according to age, gender, culture and so on.
  • I would imagine that people's personal experiences change the way they perceive what happens in their dreams, like Hates said.
  • Also, I think young people would dream a lot more about things like sex. I know I do Kappa
Which dream perspective to you mostly agree on?
  • A combination of them, but mostly biological. Again, I think Hates said it best.

1) Which one dream theme was most common (most frequently occurring in your dreams)?
A common theme I've had is being chased by something evil.

2) the least common?
The least common would have to be romantic themes

3) What are your thoughts on how people might differ on their responses according to age, gender, culture and so on.
I think it depends on your life experiences and what's going on in your life.

1) Which one dream theme was most common (most frequently occurring in your dreams)?
Other; a dream that is not listed. Which is walking in an endless grave yard. Nothing around but dead things every where. Dead city in ruin, black brackish waters, an abandoned ghost ship in ruin (looks like the titanic), & a giant moon. I keep having this dream, & I think I know why. I sometimes spawn up top a giant hill where you get a view to see it all. Sometimes in the ocean. & sometimes atop the ruined ship.

2) the least common?
Being frozen by fright. Probably because I'm always walking.

3) Your thoughts on how people might differ on their responses according to age, gender, culture and so on.
Too many mind.

Which dream perspective do you mostly agree on?
· The biological perspective (the activation-synthesis hypothesis) argues that dreams are simply unimportant by-products of random stimulation of brain cells.

This was the closest one I agree with. It's hard to 100% agree with all 3.
