Grappler type characters?

I just picked up this game and would like to know characters that focus more on grabs than combos, Like king in Tekken or Wolf in Virtua fighter. I'm having a hard time deciding on who I want to play and want to know if there is a character like that. I think I heard rock was like that but I also heard that he is a joke. Thanks.

the best grappler has to be astaroth and then ivy and rock. i love to play cassy as a grapple character sometimes too, though.

Like Lobo said, Astaroth is the no. 1 grabber in the game. He can grab anything from anywhere and does lots of damage with it.

Ivy has the strongest grabs in the game, but they are very hard to pull off. She might not be the first choice for beginners since she is very complex and it takes ages to learn her.

Rock has a similar playstyle to Astaroth, but is much weaker in general and the worst character in the game.

Yoshimitsu is worth mentioning too. His normal grabs are all about 60 damage and have a very good range. His Rainbow Drop command grab 214A+G can ringout to the back.

You first choice should be Astaroth, because he is easy to pick up, very strong and an all in all good character.

Yoshimitsu's not really a grappler, but he does have a grab with life leech. The only other char with that is Raph, I believe.

Astaroth is basically the Zangief of SC4. So ya, go with him.

I thought Algol was the best grappler for me. His moves are sweet and he is quick so you can get in quickly and strike with a grab attack.

I thought Algol had one of the smallest grab ranges in the game; not as short as Lizardman, but definitely not long enough to be considered a grappler. He does have that nice command throw, but I think the play-style that's characteristic of Algol is more poke and space the opponent (with bubbles).

True Algol has that one nice grab where he uses his thorns from his chest. IDK for me I found grabbing with Algol and Talim to be very useful I won most battles that way.

algol has great grabs but his range kinda limits how he uses them

66A+G gives him enough time to lay a free FC (A+B)
A+G leaves them close enough for an unavoidable 4(A+B) if they tech
B+G allows you to jump over them for free and apply BT mix ups

but im hardly ever in grab range with algol cause im always spacing

Astaroth is the go to for all Grabbing. His range damage and ability to throw grounded, crouching, standing, and jumping is unbeatable. However if you want to depend on throws Rock will use them more simply because everything wants to go into a grab. You could theoretically play Astaroth more throw oriented if you want but he has more options than rock so doesn't always need to, thus is the illusion Rock is more throw oriented. In reality Rock is just throw dependent, he has no viable options.

Ivy is a beast in throwing, but it's more of a scary tool than what she plays around. If you can do iCS/SS you can scare your opponent into other stuff rather than ever need to use it.

If none of these appeal to you, I suggest using characters with crouch throws or go the Seig/Nightmare route. Crouch throwers will constantly put you in jeapardy of throws and help beat 2G to avoid the scenario so you can have an aggressive game and go into any throw when they start to turtle. AS for Seig and Nightmare they just have RIDICULOUS range and can do the leg throws that can catch people off guard.

Algol has good throws, but his playstyle just doesn't let you utilize the option very often.

Honorable mention: Vader.
