Greetings from a complete fighting noob!

[08] Mercenary
Hello there people. I'm a soon-to-be 17-year-old living in Sweden who have started playing SCV recently. I have always been a huge video game geek but I am as said in the title almost entirely new to the competitive fighting scene and fighting games in general (Unless you would count the Super Smash Bros. games...) but I've always been very interested in playing Soul Calibur, Tekken, SF and the likes but never finally got a game until now.

So far, I'm really enjoying it though I'm doing pretty horrible when playing online. Finding a character that feels right is difficult too. I almost immediatly fell for Ezio for the crossbow and that he is (at least in my experience) a fairly agile and fast attacking character, without ever playing the Assassin's Creed games I would like to add. But after investing some more time I don't know if I really wanna play him. I tried Alpha Patroklos kind of at random and he seemed like he would be the right one, but after some more time investing I realized how tough it was to really master him. Any advice in finding a suitable main or for that matter any advice in general would be very appreciated :) Would be cool if some one wanted to play a bit too, even if I'm not that good ^^

Alpha Patroklos is an excellent starting character if you particularly enjoy your own suffering.
Mitsurugi is the starting character by excellence if you want to take the easy path.

Everything else is kinda the same, except that Devil Jin is hard to play in a manner that is an actual threat and Zwei is in a similar boat to alpha Patroklos.

In SC4, I was exactly where you are right now and I started with Setsuka, which is now alpha Patroklos. The result is that I gave plenty of wins away to people who didn't deserve to win and it was very frustrating, especially when they were clearly proud of their undeserved wins.

People can give you a list of character strengths and weaknesses, but I say try them all, decide on their look, personality if you want, and of course how they feel. Try Pyrrha, her playstyle's simplicity might turn you off or it might be a pleasure for you. Try Siegfried or Nightmare, you might end up liking the big swords and savour the advantages and disadvantages they come with. Try Tira, you might find her comfortable to play, enjoy her personality and even feel pride for playing such a weak character. You might like Hilde's charged moves or Xiba's tricks and range game even though you won't understand how it really works for a long time. Try Voldo, you might feel pride in being the only Voldo in sight who actually has a clue on how to play him decently well. You might hate everything Leixia says or you might fall in love with everything she says and it might just be enough.

Basically you said you want to be competitive. I say don't pick a character that is considered strong just for that reason. First you need to learn how to play the game properly and have fun in the meantime. After that you can always learn a "strong" character if you so wish.

Sorry, I know it's not what you wanted. Fear not, I'm sure my post will be followed by someone telling you that you should try X character because it's the character that they themselves like to play.

No no, not at all. I'm really grateful for you taking your time to write your answer. While I wanna play competitive it's not like I'm aiming to take advantage of every tiny little bit that could make me a liiiittle better. (For now at least :P) At the moment I just wanna get into the game as quick as possible. While it would suck playing a character who is horrible, still it doesn't bother me playing a low-tier character. It's not really like I'm asking "hey wat is the best caracturr cuz i rocks and i gonneh be caliber masturr". I surely understand that no one can say for sure what character that could suit one, but someone who is easy to get into for a beginner sure is helpful. Your advice is greatly appreciated. I've tried Mitsu for a little bit but I got the feeling that he is very "stiff" and I have trouble to regain the momentum again when losing it, but that's probably just me. I'll try him out some more.

Great to hear!
Maybe Mitsurugi just isn't for you. Personally, I find Tira very simple to play. Sure, I can't perform miracles with her because I never put much effort with her, but that's the thing, I still do quite well considering the extreme lack of effort on my part. At the same time, I remember reading a post from someone saying that they had a hard time with Tira. They couldn't figure how to play her. So even though Mitsurugi is easy to play for most people, it might not click so well with your play style.

I agree, I would just mess around with all the characters until you find one that you like. To get good at the game might take a while though because you need to nail your basic fundamentals before you really learn what your playstyle is. I mained Taki in SCIV but over time I switched to Sieg because I preferred to be at range and mixup. In SCV I'm still looking around. Lol

For example, in Soul Calibur 1 I started playing Nightmare because I loved ff7 (still do) and the giant sword reminded me of Cloud, a character from that game. 10 years later, I still almost always play Nightmare, though I do play other characters offline to learn how they work so I can beat them easier. I just love mah character lol.

Play story mode with each character a few times each.
You'll find out who jive with in a matter of hours.

Lol, story mode involves like, 3 characters (5 counting aPat and Oprah). It's really kinda bad.
