hi new player needs help

hi im new to the soul calibur series ,i play a lot of 2d fighters but thought with the lanch of scv this would be a good time to start with this intresting fighter.as a new player i went straight to training to learn some movesets,but i dont understand the notations as in some letters and arrows r solid white and some r outlines.i played around to see if i could suss it and figured its something about holding for longer or which to press 1st but im still not sure,i had a look on the forums but could not find anything any ,help would be great thanks

the outline arrows (darken arrows) mean hold the direction
