How much do you actually need to know to be good at SC?

As a newcomer to the Soul Calibur series but a fighting game veteran, I've found myself jumping in to learning this game and playing matches relying on fighting game basics like spacing, baiting and punishing, and high/low/throw mixups a la Tekken. But I feel like I'm missing something. What are some of the SC-specific things I need to learn and concentrate on to actually become a good Soul Calibur player?

The best I can come up with is that all you need to do is know how to mash... it's a very mash friendly game and it annoys the hell out of me. It just seems like the better masher wins...

Compared to Tekken (I'm also a Tekken player with SC on the side), SCV does seem more masher friendly, and matchups are much easier to learn mostly because there's fewer characters and movelists are short. Just an example but seems like in Tekken, you'd better think hard before you throw out that low (ANY low) since WS punishes are stupid fast and you can get launched hard or low parried. In SC, not all characters can even properly punish slower lows from long weapons with WR stuff (and there is no low parry like in TK), so many depend on buffered commands like Asta bullrush or Natsu 66B to punish with enough range and damage to make offenders hesitate.

Also in SC, you got characters like Pyrrah who can win high level matches with nothing but basics, like backstep and BB/AA. They call it her "pokes" but honestly they do so much damage and are super safe and fast that you can literally just spam it with no fear of punishment unless you completely whiff. Seriously, that's all she needs (and maybe the occasional stab punisher). To me, that almost seems like, say, Kaz with a mid hitting 1,1 and a tracking high 1,2 or something and being able to win using just that shit alone combined with BDC and WD lol.

SC does seem more character specific when it comes to certain strats, since everyone can have different speeds on basic attacks like BB/AA. BB/AA in SC are go-to pokes like jabs in Tekken, but all jabs in Tekken are i10 so that's very different. So depending on who you play, your AA might not punish something that say... Natsu's AA will. And from what I've played in V, I seem to not even be bothered by low/mid mixup game as much as in Tekken. It's the run counters that I tend to focus on, which is something Tekken does not have. You literally can't even move in SC without getting CH to death.

Oh and you cannot read throws in this game most the time. It's a total guessing game, A or B throws have the same animation unlike in TK.

So yea, those are just some of the things I had to adjust to moving back and forth from TK to SC.

Maybe it's just that mashers are friendlier.

LOL, most likely.

I actually find this game to be one of the most frustrating games to play. You can put all your hard work into trying to learn actual technique, mixups, setups, etc... and you lose OVER AND OVER AND OVER to mashers.

I hate games like that... it takes the fun and skill out of it.

Yeah mashing buttons never gets anyone launched....ever...how does someone mashing ever beat you? Oh wait I know...you suck...period. End of story

Wow, and that helps me how? Wait, I know... the SC community is large enough that it can be this elitist right?

I should know... I help run the MK community and we aren't large enough to be that elitist. If you can't tell, this thread is about people looking for help.

I wasnt trying to change your mind because your mind is already made up...whats the goddamn point of trying to talk to someone like that

also you werent asking for help you just said "omg i lose to mashers" its the same as any game...ask any sf bb or melty player about what losing to mashers means...

Also enjoy nrs never ending wave of patches for mk9
If you want help ask dont shit on the game

I see one person looking for help.

And then 2 people who instantly rush in to start bitching about how they don't know how to play and lose to mashers.

So exactly what are you doing in this thread?

To the OP: There are resources around to let you know Soulcalibur basics. They're not that hard and they aren't obtuse. You will have trouble with the ground game because everyone does. If you want to beat mashers then learn how to space and how to step and how to punish. If you know what zoning is and how to poke and punish then you'll eventually get the hang of things.

Insult the Insulters and accuse elitism, then make elitist comment.

Classic.

The cycle continues.

What biases? I have been trying to learn this game since it came out. I joined this site to NOT have pre-concieved notions. I bought the guide, I work in training. After a week of seeing ZERO improvement, I'm frustrated with losing to mashing and winning only when I mash.

How did I make an elitist comment?

Yeah this game is really heavy on movement and zoning. Its really weird and hard to get used to also because in scv step is a commitment unless you are using glitches that shall remained unamed

ps 9.95 if mashers win....wanna mm me? We can do this at nec. You can mash and shit and get free money apparently

Wtf this thread devolve in to? OP said he had Tekken experience, so I gave him things to look for in SC that differ from Tekken.

I see NO ONE else even contributed to helping the OP. My goodness.

Read my above comment... I came in looking to have an open mind and learn the game. I haven't played SC since SC1. I came in here looking to give the game an honest go and derive my own opinions about the game.

So punch your pillow a few times. Don't start trolling a thread someone else made so they could ask for help.
